Many of us connect gratitude with saying "thank you" to someone who has helped us, making it a short act of appreciation. According to Robert Emmons, a researcher, gratitude is an emotion that can result in long-lasting positivity (积极性).①________

Through his research, Emmons found that grateful people reported feeling healthier and happier, both mentally and physically. ②________ In the workplace, employees who are shown that they are appreciated are healthier and more productive by 50 percent.

Gratitude is a selfless act. We often take the simple things in life for granted. Those who recognise goodness in life, no matter how simple, are more likely to be sensitive to the needs of others and to help whenever they can. Being considerate of others' opinions, experiences and backgrounds will make us better people.
Gratitude makes us more self-aware.
Working in an ever-developing and fast-paced society, we are surrounded by ambitious people who are always struggling for more and better things. ④________ It starts by paying attention to what's now going on in our life, and it's true that self-awareness is the key to being successful.
Gratitude helps us build strong relationships.
Gratitude is a powerful tool for strengthening relationships, both at work and in our personal life. People who express their gratitude tend to be more willing to forgive others and therefore able to create long-lasting connections.

A.Gratitude builds understanding.

三、阅读理解
Que Liu and his wife Si En spend their mornings picking Pu'er leaves in a forest not far from their village in the highlands of Southwest China. Pu'er is a kind of tea that is famous for its complex taste. Tea lovers say its taste changes with each following steeping (续泡). But the crop this year has been small at Nannuoshan, one of the six major Pu'er mountains in Yunnan Province. The hottest weather and lowest rainfall totals in years have reduced production. "Drought (干旱) has cut production by about half this spring," said Zi Sai, son of Que Liu and Si En.
Local officials blame climate change for an increase in drought-like conditions in recent years. The dry weather has worsened over the past 20 years, with this year's drought breaking some records. "The entire rainfall pattern has changed because of global warming," said Xiao Chan, head of weather services at China's National Climate Center in Beijing.
Pu'er trees grow in the cloud-covered forests of Yunnan. The trees require no fertilize ns (化肥) or pesticides (杀虫剂), unlike the tea trees grown on large farms elsewhere. The adult plant normally reaches a height of four meters. Spring produces the highest-quality leaves from the trees. The summer harvest, with a higher percentage of water, is considered to be lower in quality. Summer leaves are sold for mass consumption (大规模消费).
The drought conditions hurt the economy of the 32 villages of Nannuoshan. "My family depends wholly on Pu'er tea for survival, earning about 200,000 yuan a year," said Zi Sai's uncle, Si Da, who is 44. "That represents about $29,000. This year, our income has been cut by tens of thousands of yuan."
While one ancient tree, said to date from 800 years ago, survived the drought, other younger trees did not. "If these kinds of trees survive, they may need three to five years for a full recovery," Si Da added. "These trees are quite pitiful. They should have been protected like children."
1.How is the climate in the Pu'er tea planting areas in recent years
A.It is too wet. B.It is much colder.
C.It is changing regularly. D.It is becoming much drier.
2.What advantage do Pu'er trees have compared with the tea trees planted on other big farms
A.They are short and small. B.They are pollution-free.
C.They grow on large farms. D.They are picked at all seasons.
3.What did Si Da think of the younger tea trees
A.They were easy to live on.
B.They should have been taken good care of.
C.They took only a short time to fully recover.
D.They had better be cut down to earn money.
4.What is the main idea of the text
A.The extreme weather mins tea farms. B.Famous tea in China might disappear.
C.Few tea trees survive natural disasters. D.Drought hurts Pu'er tea crops in China.

When we're studying a new language, many of us approach it with fear and anxiety. However, we would benefit a lot by changing our focus, according to communication skills trainer Marianna Pascal.
Pascal has spent 20 years in Malaysia helping people speak better English. Over time, she has discovered the surprising truth: How well somebody communicates in a new language has very little to do with his or her language level—but a lot more to do with the attitude.
Pascal noticed that a lot of Malaysians went into English conversations with the feeling that they were going to be judged by how many mistakes they were going to make. And they had the idea of what good and proper English is supposed to be and how far they would have to go to get there.
As a teacher, she'd noticed one special student named Faisal. Despite not knowing much English, this boy could just sit and listen to anybody very calmly, and then he could express his thoughts clearly.
Pascal realised when Faisal entered into an English conversation, he didn't feel judged. He entirely focused on the person he was speaking to and the result he wanted to get. He had no thoughts on his own mistakes.
Pascal believes that speaking a language is not like those exams that many of us have to take in school, where a tiny spelling or grammar mistake would result in a big red "×" from the teacher. In the real world, small mistakes don't matter—what matters is whether we're able to make ourselves understood. She concludes, "If you want to speak English like Faisal with that great confidence, here's one thing that you can do when you speak: Don't focus on yourself. Focus on the other person and the result you want to achieve."
1.Why was Faisal successful in English conversation according to Pascal
A.His spoken English was quite excellent. B.His attitude to speaking English was right.
C.He and his partner were good friends. D.He made few grammatical mistakes.
2.What is Pascals attitude to the mistakes English learners make
A.Tolerant. B.Careful. C.Grateful. D.Worried.
3.What should you do if you want to communicate effectively in English
A.Try to express yourself correctly. B.Remember to use advanced grammar.
C.Avoid any mistakes while speaking. D.Concentrate on what the other people say.

"Most courses can be taken online, but Extension School students must also earn 16 credit hours (学分) in person in the school in Cambridge, Massachusetts," said Moral.

Moral has always been drawn to law and politics, and he's now hoping to go to law school. "I am, of course, excited to end this stage of my life and hungry to begin the next," he said.

"Something my mom, sister and I noticed early on was his memory. That's one of the things that make him unbelievable. 三、阅读理解
Very early on in my senior year of high school, my parents pretty much carried the flame for my future college. I was happy going to a 2-year college before going after my bachelor's degree. This was for two reasons: to help them save money and to make sure I major in English. However, they insisted their only boy should attend a 4-year college right off the bat.
I was pushed to start searching for colleges therefore, ones that my parents approved of and fit within the range of tuition that my mom thought was acceptable to. I was also restricted to the immediate area, which really only included New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, so I was talked out of applying to any colleges in one of my favorite places: New Hampshire.
I should be honest: it got a bit tense at times with several different opinions between my parents and me, and with other family members or friends voicing their thoughts to my parents.
In the end, I ended up applying to three schools: SUNY Albany, SUNY New Paltz, and Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. I had been to New Paltz quite often as it was only 45 minutes away from our home. And Kutztown is located in an area our family often visited.
I was accepted by all three, and I quickly gave up Albany. I was not impressed with the city and wasn't familiar with the area. It was between New Paltz and Kutztown. After a few weeks, I ended up settling on New Paltz because Kutztown just didn't "feel right" for me. When I was on the campus, I had a feeling that this was it.
Looking back now, I wish I had known more about the application process and had a little more freedom of choice about which college I could apply to. I probably still would have attended SUNY New Paltz, but I would have loved to have a few more options.
