Ever heard of the words “one man’s waste is another man’s treasure ” Nabeel Alam has taken that idea to a whole new level.
He and 26 other high school students from Durham, east of Toronto, Canada, started a company that turns unused clothes into practical reusable bags.
Nabeel said the clothing they use is in good condition, but is being thrown away because it’s no longer useful or it’s out of style. By repurposing clothes (given by family and friends) heading for the garbage dump (垃圾场), Nabeel can work toward achieving his goal: cutting down on textile (纺织品) waste in Canada. “We give it a new purpose,” said Nabeel, the company’s president.
How does the company work The students take the clothes and put them in the wash. Then a team member cuts the clothes to match a pre-drawn outline. After that, the bags are sewn (缝制) together by a sewer who volunteers to help the company.
The team puts pictures of them on their website and Instagram so people can buy them for between $8 and $12. Nabeel said the goal of the company — named Vivlio Amet — is to let people know how much textile waste leads to climate (气候) change.
But Vivlio Amet will only last for a little while longer. That’s because Vivlio Amet started in October 2019 as an 18-week Junior Achievement Program project. Through the program, volunteer advisers team up with students to help them start a temporary business from the ground up.
Though the program is completely separate from school, Nabeel said it doesn’t feel like extra work. “I don’t treat it like a task. It’s something I like a lot,” Nabeel said. “If you want to be successful you need to work really hard at it.”
24. What does Vivlio Amet do
A. It runs a garbage dump. B. It sells reusable old clothes.
C. It makes bags with old clothes. D. It collects unused clothes for factories.
25. According to Nabeel, what is the purpose of Vivlio Amet
A. To make pocket money for him. B. To try his luck at running a company.

I’d say I fight with my parents a lot. Throughout high school, it often seemed like everything was a fight. I was always jealous (羡慕的) of some of my friends who didn’t seem to be dealing with those problems at home like I was, but I’ve come to see over the years that no one’s situation is perfect.
Part of the reason I work all week during break, in addition to the money, of course, is to be out of the house to avoid continuing fighting. At work, I eat lunch with my friend Krysta every day, but the best days are when our favorite workmate, Lucy, is on her lunch break at the same time as us. Her funny way of storytelling always has us laughing happily, and although she is almost old enough to be our mom, she feels more like a best friend.
A few weeks ago, however, there was a change in our lunch conversation, and the story she told had us in real tears (眼泪) instead of our usual tears of laughter. A more serious topic had come up, and she sat us down to explain the importance of forgiveness (宽恕), especially when it comes to our parents. Telling stories of her troubled relationship with her mother and growing up homeless at times, she changed my whole outlook on life and my feelings towards my parents. She reminded (提醒) us that no matter how much resentment (怨恨) we’re feeling in a moment of anger, we have to be thankful for the support they provide and learn to forgive everything else.
This week I’ve spent my break at home, having very small fights and lots of quality time together with my parents. Sometimes you need a reminder to make you realize how important it is to let go of past resentment and work to repair broken relationships. My workmate’s moving stories not only brought me to tears in the break room at work that day but served as that wake-up call as well.
28. Why was the author jealous of some of her friends
A. They didn’t have to work all week. B. They didn’t need to do housework.
C. They got along well with their parents. D. They could spend much time with their parents.
29. What do we know about Lucy
A. She likes to have lunch on her own. B. She is about the author’s age.
C. She has a sense of humor. D. She is a poor talker.
30. What happened to the author a few weeks ago
A. She was taught a lesson by Lucy. B. She was moved by Lucy’s mother.
C. She laughed happily at Lucy’s stories. D. She discussed her problems with Lucy.
31. What message does the author most want to give us
A. We shouldn’t waste valuable family time. B. We should show thanks to our parents.
C. We shouldn’t fight with our parents. D. We should forgive all but ourselves.
D
High school is difficult for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in right away or feel like a complete outcast. But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to the school. Joining a club forces you to communicate with people who have similar interests as you. Even if you are the shyest and quietest person, you are sure to develop a relationship with at least one person in the club that you decide to join. Speaking from personal experience, I have met some of my best friends from my after-school activities and had many new doors open to me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that doing activities looks good on college applications (申请). Being known as outgoing is a highly valued trait (特质); it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there, be determined (意志坚定的), and best of all try new things. Another nice thing is that (depending on the activity) it could help you develop skills that you could use during a college interview.
Productivity is something that teens seem to continuously have a problem with. Most teens go to school and then come home and spend the rest of the day in front of the television or phone, but activities prohibit (阻止) this. Teens are also very easy to influence and if they fall into the wrong group of people they could fall into consequences such as problems with the law. Clubs are a great place to spend time and be with good people who you can fall back on if you need them.
Maybe the most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefit (益处) it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, keeping an eye on the time, and being organized are things you will use every single day of your life.
32. What might the underlined word “outcast” in paragraph 1 mean
A. A person who is popular. B. A person who is not smart.
C. A person who is confident. D. A person who is not accepted.
33. What do colleges think highly of according to the text
A. The number of clubs you have joined. B. The strong relationships you have built.
C. The bright personality you have developed.
D. The skills you have learned while forming a club.
34. What benefit of joining a club is talked about in paragraph 4
A. Increasing knowledge. B. Learning teamworking skills.
C. Improving your fitness level. D. Making good use of your time.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. What club should you join B. How to join a club you like
C. Why should you join a club D. Should you join a second club
