Dear **,
...My grandfather lived in a time when black people had no rights at all. They were in a position in which they had either to accept they were less important, or fight the government. The reason why he chose violence is that it is the only way to show their power. My grandfather chose the latter, although he hated violence and tried to use legal ways to help black people vote for their government. Like Mandela, he was a lawyer to whom black people went for advice.
The place where he worked was full of black people asking for guidance. But one day, the official of the South African Republic attacked him for encouraging the blacks to fight against the government and put him in prison where no body talked to him for five years. After he was released, he found that the quality of life for black people had got worse. Soon he fell terribly ill....

***,
It is a time when people were bound by prejudice and misunderstanding. So it is reasonable you felt helpless. But you had already done you part by working as a lawyer to whom black people went for advice.
And it is right for you to think that black people had reached a stage where they had to use violence to protect their rights. As Mandela said, we have to “answer violence with violence”. The people for whom you had helped would always remember you and do as you told them.
It is just a question of time.
Yours,
