During the 15th century, spices (香料) from India were very popular in Europe, however, the only way to travel from Europe to India was over land. This was a long and expensive trip. The King of Portugal realized if he could find a way to get to India by sailing on the ocean, he would become rich by trading spices in Europe. An explorer (探险家) by the name of Bartolomeu Dias had discovered the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of Africa. It was thought that there may be a way around the Cape and to the northeast towards India. However, many were skeptical and thought that the Indian Ocean did not connect with the Atlantic Ocean.
Vasco da Gama, who was born in 1460s to a wealthy Portuguese family in Sines, was given a fleet of ships by the king and told to discover a sea route (路线) around Africa to India. He was also told to look for other trading possibilities along the way.
Vasco da Gama left on his first voyage (航行) from Lisbon, Portugal, with four ships and 170 men on July 8, 1497. Gama and his men rounded the southern tip of Africa at the Cape of Good Hope on November 22. They then headed north up the coast of Africa. They stopped at trading ports along the way including Mombasa and Malindi. At Malindi (about 120 km northeast of Mombasa), they picked up a local pilot who knew the direction to India. With the help of a monsoon wind they were able to cross the Indian Ocean and arrive in Calicut, India in less than a month (on May 20, 1498). At Calicut, Vasco ran into serious trouble when trying to trade. He had brought little of value in his ships. This made the local traders doubtful of him and very soon he had to leave. The voyage back was disastrous. Around half of his men died from scurvy (坏血病) as the trip back took much longer because of the winds not blowing in his favor. However, when he returned home, he was still a hero. He had found the much needed trade route to India.
24. What does the underlined word “skeptical” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Worried.
B. Doubtful.
C. Hopeful.
D. Supportive.
25. What was the main purpose of Vasco da Gama’s first voyage to India
A. To take control of India.
B. To control the spice trade.
C. To find a trade route to India.
D. To bring back spices from India.
26. Which is the correct route of Gama’s first voyage to India
A. Sines → the Cape of Good Hope → Mombasa → Malindi → Calicut.
B. Sines → the Cape of Good Hope → Malindi → Mombasa → Calicut.
C. Lisbon → the Cape of Good Hope → Malindi → Mombasa→ Calicut.
D. Lisbon → the Cape of Good Hope → Mombasa → Malindi → Calicut.
27. What happened to Gama and his men when they stayed at Calicut
A. Their trading was well-received.
B. Half of them got a serious illness.
C. They missed the best time to go back home.
D. They were considered unwelcome by the local traders.

Parents often tell kids that playing video games will harm their brains. But last June a study found the opposite — certain video games can give your brain help. Researchers from the University of Montreal, in Canada, asked a group of people to play Super Mario 64 for 90 hours over the course of about 10 weeks. They found that those people experienced growth in the part of the brain that is responsible for memory (记忆力) .
But many people think that there’s nothing good about looking at a screen for hours at a time. They say that playing sports, reading, and doing other activities can give you the same benefits (好处) that playing video games does. Plus, some video games can be harmful. The study from the University of Montreal also found that playing shooter games like Call of Duty has a different influence from playing Super Mario 64 — it causes the area of the brain that’s responsible for memory to shrink (缩小).
Here’s what two of our readers think.
Playing video games can be beneficial because it requires skills like problem-solving, strategic (战略上的) thinking, and sometimes teamwork. A study by researchers at the University of Glasgow, in Scotland, found that playing video games improves your communication skills and ability to find ways to solve problems. Video games can also help you become more creative. For example, Minecraft requires you to think outside the box and build things with materials you never even knew existed (存在). You can build your dream house! Some schools are even using Minecraft to teach topics like math and computer science.
— Mackenzle Reldy, Nebraska
Playing video games takes time away from other more important things. I used to spend a lot of time playing them. Sometimes that kept me from doing things I needed to do, like studying my spelling words. Playing video games can also be bad for your health. Last year, researchers studied kids and teens in Canada who play video games. They found a connection between playing video games for hours before going to bed and being overweight.

Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”. It is the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of Lent (大斋节) leading up to Easter. During Lent — the forty days before Easter — many Christians eat less food, and the name “Fat Tuesday” refers to the last day of eating richer, fatty foods before the days of Lent begin. In 2019, Mardi Gras will be celebrated on March 5.
In America, celebrations for Mardi Gras are most famous in New Orleans, where it is the last part of weeks of parades (游行) that begin in January. Other Southern cities, such as Mobile, Demopolis and San Francisco, also mark Mardi Gras. The day is the most important of the Carnival (狂欢节) season.
According to the official Mardi Gras New Orleans website, the earliest U.S. Mardi Gras took place in Mobile in 1703 with a secret society, the Masque de la Mobile. This society worked just like today’s “krewes” in New Orleans who plan the celebrations and pay for the floats (彩车) used in the parades before and during Mardi Gras. The celebration arrived in New Orleans soon after its founding in 1718.
About a century later, according to Mardi Gras New Orleans, street parades had become a tradition of the city and many krewes had formed, their members remaining unknown by name and their faces hidden by masks (面具). In 1872, a “King of Carnival,” Rex, was introduced to manage the parades. The tradition of float riders throwing small gifts to the people in the street also began in the 1870s. Usually, “throws” include beads, cups, coins and stuffed animals.
According to Mardi Gras New Orleans, krewes are private organizations whose members get together year round to plan their parade’s costumes and throws. They usually raise money from their members and sell krewe-related products. The city of New Orleans does not take part in organizing Mardi Gras parades; its only job is to allow the parade to go on.

A
About eight years ago, Mary Grace Henry of Harrison, New York, asked for a sewing machine (缝纫机) for her birthday. She wanted to design and sell headbands (头巾) to pay for just one African girl’s schooling.
Now, 11,000 headbands later, Mary Grace has sold enough to give 45 girls living in poverty (贫穷) the gift of an education.
Henry is the founder of Reverse The Course — a headband-making business that gives 100 percent of the money it makes toward educational chances for girls, primarily in Uganda and Kenya. Henry had the idea to start her business after learning about early marriage in some developing countries — a practice that greatly reduces the likelihood of a girl receiving education.
There are about 67 million child brides (新娘) worldwide, according to the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). Girls in poor communities in the developing world are greatly affected by the practice, which “repeats the cycle of poverty,” according to the organization.
On November 6, Henry won a World of Children Award for her work to fight against the practice through educational chances. According to the organization, $35,000 will be given to support Reverse The Course’s work by providing money for student workshops and programs for girls in poor Africa.
“The greatest difficulty of education faced by both girls and boys is poverty,” Henry told the awards organization. “Girls, though, face a second hurdle that is far more difficult to address: their culture. In many countries throughout the world, girls are viewed as having not just less value than boys, but often little or no value.”
“When you see a need, act,” Henry said of the advice she’d give to others who want to make change. “Dream big, but start small, taking little steps. Set a goal (目标) and don’t frighten yourself by thinking about the ‘what-ifs.’ Each step taken will present both new chances and new difficulties. Face each one as it comes and then keep going. All those little steps, done with love, will lead you to places impossible to imagine.”
1. Why did Henry found Reverse The Course
A. To develop girls’ sewing skills.
B. To raise money for the homeless.
C. To teach girls to design headbands.
D. To help African girls receive education.
2. What might surprise Henry greatly eight years ago
A. Girls having less value than boys.
B. Child marriage in some countries.
C. Health problems in poor Africa.
D. Unfair schooling in some countries.
3. Which of the following best explains “hurdle” underlined in Paragraph 6
A. Problem.
B. Choice.
C. Need.
D. Mistake.
4. What did Henry advise readers to do
A. Treasure what they have.
B. Put themselves in others’ shoes.
C. Take small steps towards achieving their goal.
D. Bring happiness to others with time and patience.

B
In our culture, we always think dodos were very stupid. But the flightless birds from the Indian Ocean’s Mauritius Island shouldn’t be looked on this way. A new study is helping to change our thoughts.
According to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), dodos were probably “actually fairly smart”. The paper led by scientists from AMNH suggests that the dodo probably had a similar intelligence level to its closest living relatives — pigeons (鸽子).
The problem started in the late 1500s when the island was discovered. “The dodos living there had no fear of humans and they were brought onto boats and used as fresh meat for sailors,” Eugenia Gold, the lead author of the paper, said. “Because of that behavior and animals that were introduced to the island, they disappeared in less than 100 years after humans arrived. Today, they are widely known for having died out.”
Gold knew that even parts of dodo specimens (标本) are not easily found — what people see in museums are often man-made models. But she and her team finally managed to find a dodo skull (头骨) in good condition at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London.
That skull along with those of pigeons and a close relative of the dodo, the Rodrigues solitaire that has died out, were examined using CT scanning (扫描). The method allows the researchers to know the brain size as well as the size of different brain parts. The scientists then compared the dodo to the others.
“It’s not too large or too small — it’s exactly the size you would expect it to be for its body size,” Gold said. “So if you consider brain size as a way to measure (评估) intelligence, dodos probably had a similar intelligence level to pigeons. Of course, there are more methods of measuring an animal’s intelligence, but this gives us a basic measure.”
5. What did the researchers find about dodos
A. They might be relatives of pigeons.
B. They might be cleverer than pigeons.
C. They might be not as stupid as people think.
D. They might have disappeared around the 1660s.
6. What was difficult for the researchers in their study
A. Making models of dodos.
B. Studying parts of dodo specimens.
C. Comparing dodo skulls from the NHM.
D. Finding a fine specimen of a dodo skull.
7. What does the underlined part “the others” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. Pigeons on Mauritius Island.
B. Animals introduced to Mauritius.
C. The pigeon and the Rodrigues solitaire.
D. The Rodrigues solitaire in the Indian Ocean.
8. What did Gold think of measuring the brain size of dodos
A. It usually leads to wrong results.
B. It helps us know dodos’ intelligence.
C. It works better on pigeons than dodos.
D. It is often better than measuring the body size.

I was riding the train home from a downtown Chicago courtroom以及本句中的in tears和looking out of the window可知,“我”在回家的火车上,流着泪。“我”望着窗外自然是希望没人“注意到(notice)”。
42. A。 My husband and I had just ended our marriage可知,“我”心里很难过“(sadness)”。
47. B。由my heart goes out to you和I feel your pain以及you will see the rainbow可知,信的内容让“我”感到很“温暖(warmest)”。
48. A。 I am only a stranger to you可知,“我”不“认识(know)”那位女士。

52. D。由本句中的you will see the rainbow可知,此处表示太阳会“照耀(shine)”。
53. B。 She ... then smiled and disappeared可知,“我”再也没有看到过那位“女士(woman)”。
I had never felt so frightened and alone可知,作者感到很孤独。

由第一段可知,八年前,Henry开始卖自己做的头巾;再由第三段中的start her business after learning about early marriage in some developing countries — a practice that greatly reduces the likelihood of a girl receiving education可知,Henry八年前了解到一些发展中国家的童婚问题导致很多女孩没有受到良好的教育、继而使得她们一直贫穷,因此才萌生了卖头巾帮助她们的想法,故推断童婚问题使她大为震惊。
3. A。 The greatest difficulty of education faced by both girls and boys is poverty以及划线词后的far more difficult to address: their culture ... girls are viewed as having not just less value than boys, but often little or no value可知,hurdle与difficulty意思相近,即“障碍,难题,问题”。
