Have you ever been to a music festival Well, if you live in the UK, the answer is probably yes. The number of festivals has grown greatly over the last few years and now there are around 200 every summer. So let’s look at the history of four famous festivals.
The Glastonbury Festival is a five-day festival of contemporary performing arts held most years in Somerset, in the south-west of England. There are a rock and pop stage, a jazz stage, the Avalon stage, a theatre / cabaret / comedy stage, a cinema tent, a dance tent and a circus. The festival started in 1970 and about 120,000 people go to it every summer.

The festival first came to its present site on the banks of the River Thames in Reading in 1971, when it moved from Plumpton in Sussex. It is still on the same site over 47 years later!

The WOMAD Festival started in 1982 and takes place in July at Charlton Park, near Malmesbury in Wiltshire, and you can see different bands and musicians from all over the world. The festival welcomes over 26,000 visitors each year.
The one-day Monsters of Rock Festival at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes was first held in 1980 and gave visitors the chance to hear the very best of hard rock and heavy metal. There were no festivals between 1996 and 2003 as a result of changing musical fashions, but now it has returned and grown into a two-day festival with a campsite for the 30,000 people who go there in summer days.

Maggie had never experienced an earthquake before, only prepared for it. As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was routine (常规的) at school. Her family as well had made plans in the event of a natural disaster. Earthquakes are so much more common on the West Coast of the United States.
Today Maggie was home alone. Maggie knew her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway, thinking about preparing supper for Maggie’s dad. Maggie’s dad would arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a two-week business trip.
Maggie arrived home from school at the regular time. She was taking some biscuits from the kitchen cupboard, when she felt it. First just a tremor (微震), then the violent shaking. But the table remained undamaged, and Maggie hid herself in fear.
After what seemed like a century the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. The smell of natural gas was present in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve (阀门) was located. Dad had shown her where it was and how to turn it off. Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was now almost unrecognizable. As Maggie reached the open basement door she could see the steps were still in good condition. I visited Niagara Falls in my home country of Canada a few years ago. But this year it was time to check another large waterfall off my list. Situated between Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls, also called Mosi-oa-Tunya, amazed me. With huge amounts of water falling over high cliffs (悬崖), it is truly a beautiful view (风景). But I did much more than see the falls!
In Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, there are several well-kept hiking trails (徒步步道). My friends and I hiked the 600 steps down one of the trails to the Boiling Pot. This is where the water from the falls meets high cliff walls and creates a churning (翻腾的) pool of water. After hiking back up, we cooled off in the water drops from the falls on the Knife’s Edge Bridge opposite the falls. Then we began to look for even more interesting things to do.
During seasons when the water is low, paid guides help brave visitors reach the Devil’s Pool at the top of the falls. The brave can swim to the edge and look at the churning water far below. My group, however, chose to visit a famous bridge instead.
The historic Victoria Falls Bridge crosses the Zambezi River just south of the falls at a height of 111 meters. On the bridge, we could choose many activities such as a walking tour and the world’s highest bungee jump (蹦极). We stopped for a small meal at a cafe on the Zambian side of the bridge while deciding what to do. I finally chose the Bridge Slide, beginning on the Zambian side and ending at the bridge. Holding the rope, I collected my courage and pushed off from the platform. Once in the air, I was very surprised at the feeling of flying as I slowly turned around for a wonderful view. I was glad I hadn’t kept my feet on the ground!

Samuel L. Clemens, also known as Mark Twain, started off his writing career (事业) in 1865 with his big hit story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County — a story-within-a-story told to a listener by an old California miner (矿工). From that day on, the works of the great humorist always had different animals.
Some members of Twain’s literary animals were based on real animals, such as the Clemens family’s named pet cats. Some were imaginary, like that celebrated jumping frog.
As a boy in Missouri, he got pleasure from knowing the animals of the woods; in old age, he felt a deep relationship with the animals large and small that he met in his travels. His cats, family dog, horses, donkeys, and calf also won his three daughters’ love at their Hartford home. On March 22, 2018, to mark this part of Twain’s personal life, The Mark Twain House & Museum opened a new exhibition, Tails of Twain: How Animals Shaped the Man & His Work. The exhibition was rich with exhibits from the museum’s collections.
The king of the animals in Twain’s world was the cat, “the only creature in heaven or earth or anywhere that don’t have to obey (听从) somebody or other, including the angels.” He was known to be the proud pet parent of 19 cats during his childhood. As an adult, the Clemens home always had a named cat. Even on vacation, the Clemens family borrowed cats from locals to live with them. Dogs were considered second-class pets, but Twain liked them. Twain once wrote an ode (颂诗) to his dead dog Burns: “She lived a quiet harmless life in Hartford ...”
In true Twainism, humans were not as loved as the “Higher Animals”. Even the most low-down animal, however, was superior in Twain’s eyes to “the human race.” After all, he did write once “Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel (残忍的) .”

Every student learns that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. But nine hundred years earlier, an Irishman called St. Brendan described a voyage (航行) in a tiny boat. After a difficult trip, he came to a strange land that is now believed to be America. Many people think the story is a fairy tale (童话). However, the sailor Tim Severin believed it might be true. How would he prove it By repeating Brendan’s voyage himself.
First, he needed a boat like Brendan’s. According to the story, it was made of animal skins (皮). Severin talked to people in Ireland who knew how to make leather (皮革) boats. The research took four years, and building the boat took four months. Not surprisingly, he called the boat the Brendan. It was only 11 metres long. The first time Severin sailed in the Brendan, he wondered if they would really be able to cross the Atlantic.
In May 1976, Severin and four others set sail from Ireland. For two weeks, Severin felt seasick. Besides, the leather smelled terrible, and they were always wet. Sometimes, they had to sail in the opposite direction because the wind was blowing the wrong way. Still, they went on through the Scottish islands. Like Brendan the sailor, they saw many whales. The whales showed interest in the little skin boat, and often came to look at it.
Next they arrived in Iceland. In his story, Brendan describes an island where unfriendly people threw burning rocks at him. Perhaps this was Iceland, where volcanoes throw fire and hot rocks into the sea. Leaving Iceland, the Brendan faced a terrible storm. Luckily, they survived.
Like Brendan the sailor, they ran into fog (雾) as they passed Greenland. When the fog lifted, Severin saw icebergs. This meant they were close to Newfoundland, Canada. Their journey was almost over! However, the worst was yet to come. One day, the Brendan hit ice and water began to go into the boat. They tried their best to keep the boat above the surface. Luckily, they were able to fix the hole with a piece of leather.
On June 26, 1977, the Brendan reached Canada. They had made it! So did this mean an Irishman had reached the New World 1,500 years ago Perhaps. But without doubt, Tim Severin had made one of the greatest sailing trips of the 20th century.

The first CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras appeared in Britain in 1953, and by the 1960s there were already a few cameras in major streets in London. Today, there are more than four million CCTV cameras across the country.
That’s one camera for every fourteen people. The cameras are there to film dangerous or illegal behaviour. With new software, they can recognise the faces of known criminals, and a new kind of CCTV in the Netherlands can discover angry voices and warn the police of trouble. But these cameras don’t just watch criminals; they watch all of us, almost all of the time. Every time we go into a shop, or use a cash machine, or travel on public transport, a camera records our actions.
The amount of surveillance (监视) in towns and cities across Britain is increasing. Some goods in shops now have RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags (标签) stuck on them. When you pick up one of these things, the RFID tag sends a radio message to a CCTV camera and the camera starts filming you. Shops say that this technology helps to catch shoplifters — but only by treating everybody as a possible criminal.
Cameras and tags are not the only ways of monitoring (监视) our actions. Every time you make or receive a call on your mobile phone, the phone company knows the number of the phone you are calling and how long the call lasts. It is even possible to work out your exact location.
And what about satellites (卫星) Are they watching us from space How much can they see Anybody with a computer can download Google Earth and get satellite photos of the entire world.
Even when you are at home, you are not necessarily safe from surveillance. When you use your computer to visit websites, you are probably sending and receiving cookies without realising it. Cookies move information from your computer to the website and record which websites you visit. Modern technology is making it easier and easier to stay in touch, but it is also making it nearly impossible for us to hide.
5. What are CCTV cameras mainly used to do
A. To film street crime.
B. To warn the police of trouble.

A. Earth helpers.
B. Stars in space.
C. Eyes in the sky.

A. Somebody is watching you

Dear Helen,
I’m writing to invite you to go to the lecture on “Natural Disasters” to be held by our school.
The lecture will be given from 3 pm to 5 pm next Tuesday in the school hall. A famous professor will introduce some commonly occurring natural disasters and tell us how to protect ourselves from them. I think we should take the chance to learn more about natural disasters, because even a little knowledge can increase our chances of surviving any type of disaster.
Looking forward to your reply.
