I particularly enjoy the works of Greenwich Village poet Edward Field, whose interest in cinema led to a number of poems based on old monster (怪物) movies (including many about Frankenstein and my favorite, Curse of the Cat Woman).

There are so many to choose from! I love Robert Frost, especially “Mending Wall,” mostly because he is my dad’s favorite poet. However, personally I love Langston Hughes’s poem “Dreams” because it always brings happiness to me. I am also a big fan of the older poems, such as Spenser’s “One Day I Wrote Her Name Upon the Strand” because it is so simple, and “The Tyger” and “The Lamb” by William Blake because I love the language.
Michael Ugulini 51 minutes ago
My favorite poet is Suji Kwock Kim. Ever since I read her book of poetry “Notes from the Divided Country”, I have been a big fan of her clear and thoughtful writing. My favorite poem of hers is “Borderlands,” which she wrote in memory of her grandmother. It is a poem about her grandmother’s experiences during the war.

I always wanted to be a firefighter. It seemed exciting to me. I like to be outside, lift heavy things and sleep on the ground!
In college, I got a job with the forest service. My first week on the job, they asked if I wanted to get my red card (training for forest fires). I said yes!
The training was a week long. I learned about the different types of fire crews (工作人员) and I remember the instructor saying hotshots were the top dogs. He said they had the most difficult and dangerous job and that you had to really prove yourself in order to be a hotshot. I was sold. I didn’t want to do anything else!
However, hotshot crews don’t hire (雇佣) people without fire experience. I returned home from training to Logan where the Logan Hotshots are based. I walked in and told the boss I wanted to be a hotshot and they should keep me in mind if they needed anyone
The very next day I got a note saying the Hotshots were looking for me! A woman on their crew got injured and they needed a replacement ... they were headed to a fire that day. They thought of me because I had just been there the day before.
We arrived at the fire near Provo, Utah at about 10 pm that night. We ended up working 40 hours, digging fire lines. I think I fell asleep standing up against my tool at one point.
My feet were covered in blisters (水泡) and the helicopter that was supposed to pick us up at the top of the mountain broke down and we had to walk miles!
To my delight, the crew liked me and hired me after that. I also met my husband that night! How cool is that!

The Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest (竞赛) “invites middle schoolers and high schoolers from around the world to create pieces of art that look at human influences on our oceans,” says program director Alyssa Irizarry.
The contest was founded in 2011 by Linda Cabot, a visual (视觉的) artist and ocean activist based in Westwood, Massachusetts. It has since reached nearly 10,000 kids worldwide. No entry fee (费用) is required, but students who want to enter must be between the ages of 11 and 18.
Students are required to “create a piece that not only presents problems, but also communicates a message that encourages others to act.”
Students can compete in one of five categories (种类): visual art, poetry, prose, film, and music. They are given a school year to work on their pieces, which are then entered into one of two categories: junior or senior.
Irizarry says that visual art is the most popular category, followed by poetry. Winners receive scholarship (奖学金) awards of up to $1,500 and see their work appear in different places to help raise awareness about ocean health.
When most people think about ocean science, they think about the tools that ocean scientists use. Irizarry has a different idea. “Art is a really powerful tool for people to connect with nature and to learn about the world around them,” she says. “It requires you to slow down, notice things, think, and ask questions.”
Making art, Irizarry adds, helps a person create a connection to the world. That connection “turns awareness of a problem into action.”
Irizarry has a message for all kids who want to help protect our oceans: “Do something to make a difference.”
28. What can we learn about the rules of the contest
A. Each winner receives $1,500.

It’s a book about friendship, loyalty (忠诚), and teamwork. It will make you laugh and cry, and give you hope.
Co-written by Jessica Kensky and her husband, Patrick Downes, the new picture book, Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship, tells the story of a girl named Jessica who is dealing with the loss of her leg. Rescue, her service dog, discovers that he can be a good friend and help Jessica get through hard times.
The book is illustrated (作插图) by Scott Magoon, whose drawings show Rescue working alongside Jessica. “He can pick up the phone to bring it to her if she needs it,” Magoon said. “He can even open doors for her or call for help if she’s in trouble.”
The story does not discuss the bombing attack (炸弹袭击) at the Boston Marathon in 2013, which took place at the finish line, killing three people and injuring hundreds of others. But readers learn in the authors’ note that Downes and Kensky were among those injured. Kensky lost both legs, and Downes lost his left leg.
It took two years to write Rescue & Jessica, and two more to publish (出版) it. “The best part was having a good distraction from the really hard time I was having during my recovery (康复),” Kensky said.
Downes described how Rescue has helped the couple. “When we’re sad, he makes funny sounds and makes us laugh,” Downes said. “He’s also there to help us celebrate good times. If you have a friend, things might be hard, but you can overcome it together.”
Downes and Kensky and their picture book speak for “Boston Strong.” Downes explained the term: “It brought people together after the bombing and brought out the best in everyone. When people needed it the most, we took care of each other.”

Exchange attitude for gratitude (感恩).
Our attitude has a big influence on how we deal with situations. When in a stressful situation, try exchanging attitude for gratitude. 38 Instead of being angry about the traffic, find some gratitude. Look around and think of all the things you can be thankful for.
Relax, relax, relax.
39 It will help you relax and make you better prepared to deal with stressful situations when they come.

While the temperature in Chicago on March 4, 2018 was 5 degrees, the water was even colder — 2 degrees. That didn’t stop more than 4,800 people on North Avenue Beach from jumping into Lake Michigan.
The Chicago Polar Plunge is a yearly event to raise money for Special Olympics Chicago. All of the participants collect at least $200 from friends and family members to get the chance to jump into the lake’s icy water in the middle of winter. More than $1.5 million was raised for a great cause: Special Olympics Chicago and the more than 7,500 athletes (运动员) it serves.
Special Olympics, a nonprofit (非营利的) organization, was founded in 1968. The group’s purpose is to provide athletic training and competition in 22 sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities (缺陷).
After some initial speeches, the first group of plungers ran into the lake. Many of the participants were members of teams that dressed up in costumes (化妆服), including Minions and Waldo from the Where’s Waldo book series.
Chloe Krecun, 12, from Chicago, was shaking when she got out of the water. “I couldn’t feel my feet or fingers, and my shoes are filled with water,” she said afterwards. But she would do it again to support the Special Olympic athletes.
“Just because people have different needs,” Chloe said, “doesn’t mean they can’t do the same things we can do.”
As other plungers headed towards the water to “take a plunge,” they shared why they had participated in the event. “My cousin has really benefited (获益) from the Special Olympics, so my family and I are out here supporting him by plunging,” said Brandon Marty.
Brunilda Cotton, a special education teacher at Sycamore Trails Elementary School in Bartlett, Illinois, was also paying attention to Special Olympics as she prepared to plunge. “It gives the athletes confidence; they belong to a team, and they enjoy being able to do things other kids do,” Cotton said.
The Polar Plunge is a cold — but amazing — experience that shows how much fun you can have helping others.

Dear friends,
I’m glad to be here to share my ideas about sandstorms.
In recent years, sandstorms have frequently swept over some cities in China, causing great harm to the environment and people’s health. So we need to take more action to reduce the occurrence of sandstorms. We should prevent desertification by growing more grass and trees. What’s more, the government should put more effort into forest protection. I believe with joint efforts there will be fewer sandstorms and perhaps in the near future there will be no sandstorms.
Thanks for your listening.
