Module 4单元测试题
第二部分: 阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Every morning, many girls in the African country of Zimbabwe rise with the sun and fetch clean water for their families. They walk many miles and carry the water home on their heads. Where they live, there is no running water.
If my boss hadn’t required me to write an article about the Zimbabwean girls for our newspaper, I wouldn’t have had the chance to get in touch with these girls.
“You just have to relax your neck and head and make it follow the load (负荷物),” one girl told me. “It is easy if you practice.”
I had never tried to balance a pot (罐) on my head. I tried and practiced. But it was not easy at all. I managed to walk only a couple of yards before the pot fell off my head. The girls covered their mouths and laughed at me.
Water is not the only thing that requires head-balancing skills. In most of these villages, there is no electricity for cooking, so firewood is used instead. The girls must collect and carry the firewood back to their villages. They insist the easiest way to do this is on their heads.
Even at school, head-balancing skills are always used. At a school near the small town of Norton, I saw a group of girls fetching bags of sand that were to be used to build a new classroom. They carried these bags without difficulty. When I tried, I could not bear (承受) the weight.
Girls in many countries around the world prefer to carry things on their heads. They are taught this skill at a young age and grow up to have strong necks and great posture (体态). For them, it is simply a way of life.
21. What can we learn about the Zimbabwean girls
A. They lead a hard life.
B. They have no chance of education.
C. Their necks cause them a lot of pain.
D. They want to build new classrooms.
22. Why did the girls laugh at the author
A. Because of his bad posture.
B. Because he walked so slowly.
C. Because he relaxed his neck and head.
D. Because of his poor head-balancing skills.
23. What would be the best title for the text
A. Walking for water
B. Living in Zimbabwe
C. Carrying on the head
D. Traveling around the world

From the very first moment I met Mattie on my TV show, I fell in love with him. He was a ten-year-old little poet born with a life-threatening (有生命威胁的) disease. But his poems of peace and hope had touched millions of lives. We became quick friends, e-mailing each other.
We often talked about the sunrises and sunsets, and I shared with Mattie that I wasn’t a beach person because there was no need for me to tan (晒黑). He strongly advised me to go to the beach that he and his mom visited. He always enjoyed every single second of the present. He could not understand why everybody wasn’t out on the pier (码头) at sunrise during their vacation, because he couldn’t figure out why people would want to miss a sunrise. I said, “Mattie, most people like to sleep on vacation.”
We also talked a lot about dying. He said to me one day, “I sometimes get a little unhappy or angry when I’m afraid of dying. The boys who live upstairs said that because I got famous, I should always be happy and never sad. I don’t think they understand what it’s like to know you have to live your life so fast, because unless I keep getting miracles (奇迹), my life here won’t last. I am afraid of the pain of dying and worried about what I will miss because I love living so, so, so much.”
He said to me, “I really do want to be a peacemaker when I die.” His dream was to bring his message of peace to as many people as possible.
Mattie died on June 22, 2004, but the light of his life shone so brightly that every one of us will feel the light for the rest of our lives. I know that Heartsongs (his book of poems) has left a heartprint in my life.
24. What can we learn about Mattie
A. He didn’t like the color of his skin.
B. He was a person who valued time highly.
C. He always went to the beach to have a vacation.
D. He invited the author to have a vacation with him.
25. The boys who lived upstairs thought Mattie _____.
A. could become famous
B. would die sooner or later
C. should have no worries
D. was in a difficult situation
26. In the last paragraph the author wants to say _____.
A. Mattie’s spirit lives on
B. Heartsongs is worth reading
C. every one of us needs peace
D. we should do what Mattie did

It started about 30 years ago. Three men who’d grown up together in Pigtown (a neighborhood in the city of Baltimore) took an empty piece of land at the corner of Ward and Bayard streets and started tossing horseshoes (掷马蹄铁).
None of the three — not Roy Whitney, not his cousin Emory Green, not Emory’s little brother, Leon — knew they were starting a tradition.
“We started playing for the fun of it. Then word got around, and people started coming from other neighborhoods, and it kept on growing,” Leon Green, 62, said Saturday afternoon at the First Annual Horseshoe Tournament (锦标赛) at the Pit in Pigtown.
People in Pigtown said they held the event to celebrate the important role the site has come to play in raising Pigtown’s neighborhood spirit.
“Once the event started, it became a neighborhood hangout, a place for men to hear music, talk to each other, and pitch horseshoes,” said William Chambers, 83, a lifelong Pigtown local.
“Informal games are often held, rain or shine, especially on weekends,” said Charlotte Marshall, another lifelong local. “We care about this neighborhood and about each other.” She was helping cook hot dogs and burgers at the event.
A star in local competitions, Tony Ashton, and his partner, Ernie Jones, beat two other two-man teams in early rounds.
“My wife says, ‘Don’t bring home any more prizes!’” he said, laughing. “If I win one today, I’ll give it to the neighbors here. They are worthy of it.”
Leon Green and his partner, Whitney, were knocked out early in the tournament, but stood by happily drinking a cup of fresh juice.
He seemed to be enjoying a bigger victory.
“We have a good time here. The event is about getting together and talking and enjoying yourself. You don’t even have to be that good. It’s all for fun. It’s the way we’re raised here in Pigtown,” he said.
27. Who is a creator of Pigtown’s horseshoe games
A. Leon Green.
B. William Chambers.
C. Charlotte Marshall.
D. Tony Ashton.
28. The horseshoe site is important to the locals of Pigtown because _____.
A. it is close to two main streets
B. it serves as a big food market
C. it helps build neighborhood spirit
D. it is a major horseshoe training center
29. According to the last three paragraphs, Leon Green _____.
A. came mainly to enjoy some juice
B. cared little about success or failure
C. became champion of the tournament
D. was confident of his horseshoe skills
30. The author writes this text mainly to _____.
A. discuss the value of neighbors
B. introduce an interesting sport
C. describe the past of Pigtown
D. report a community event

Imagine driving down a country road past a huge, open field where goats are eating grass. Suddenly a truck breaks down and makes a loud noise. Just as suddenly, the goats fall to the ground.
A few moments pass. The goats are back on their feet. What just happened Well, the goats were very frightened and dropped to the ground, but not all goats act like this. There is only one kind of goat that behaves this way when it is surprised. It is called a Tennessee Fainting (晕倒) Goat.
In the 1800s, a farmer arrived in Marshall County, Tennessee, with a few goats and a cow. People say he came from Nova Scotia, Canada. Since the man did not talk much, no one knew where he got these goats. When he left, he took the cow, but he sold the goats.
The behavior of one of the goats was different from most others. Being frightened caused the goat’s body to go stiff (僵直的) and sometimes fall over. No one had seen goats do this before. They began to call this new goat a Tennessee Fainting Goat.
This special kind of goat does not actually faint. They just look like they do. The fainting goats stay awake. The baby goats, however, usually do fall over, but the good thing is that they do not have far to fall. Some older ones learn to stand near something like a fence or a tree, just in case they are frightened.
Now there are about three thousand fainting goats in the United States. People enjoy raising them, because goats of this kind are gentle, smart, and playful. They just get scared stiff now and then. The moment of stiffness only lasts about ten or fifteen seconds. Then the goats walk and act like any other goat.
31. What happens to the goats that fall to the ground a few moments later
A. They fall asleep.
B. They eat much more.
C. They stand up again.
D. They are taken away by the truck.
32. Which of the following would most likely cause a fainting goat to fall
A. Green fields. B. A light wind.
C. Loud thunder. D. Pleasant smells.
33. We can learn about all of the following EXCEPT _____.
A. what causes the fainting goats to faint
B. where the fainting goats came from
C. how the fainting goats got their name
D. who brought the first fainting goats to Tennessee
34. What do we know about the fainting goats
A. No one likes to raise them.
B. Not all of them really fall over.
C. Their stiffness lasts a long time.
D. Not all of them stay awake when they faint.
35. This text is about an animal that _____.
A. likes eating outside B. sleeps during the day
C. comes from Canada D. acts in a strange way

We are the lucky owners of a lovely chocolate dog called Rose. 36 The area is perfect for dogs as we can let her off the lead. She runs around everywhere, sniffing (嗅) this and smelling that, saying hello to every dog she meets on the way.
37 That’s because at least twice a week I catch her with a smelly old bone that she has found.
She would carry the old bones home if I let her. 38 When I tell her to drop the bone, she does so unhappily, looking at me with her big eyes as if I’m starving (使挨饿) her.
The other day we had been walking for about 20 minutes. Suddenly I noticed that instead of sniffing and running all over the place as usual, she was walking closely after me. Though I had told her that she could go, she kept walking behind me. Ten minutes later, she was still walking closely after me so I stopped and took a good look at her. 39 She had decided that I wouldn’t see it if she walked alongside me where I could just see the top of her head. 40 Once I’d made her drop the bone, she was off. Her trick (诡计) hadn’t quite worked.
A. Rose certainly has a good nose.
B. I had to laugh at her cleverness.
C. Suddenly I couldn’t find her anywhere.
D. I was happy to see Rose looking so much better.
E. That’s when I found Rose had a bone in her mouth.
F. However, I don’t want her with them in case they make her ill.
G. Every day I take her for a walk along the river beside our house.

Dear Peter,
I’m writing to tell you something about an ancient town in my hometown.
Last weekend, I visited it with some friends. It was the second time that I had been there. And I found that great changes have taken place there.
Two years ago, most houses were old and there were few people in the town. The environment was beautiful and quiet. But now lots of new houses have been built and more and more tourists are coming to enjoy this new tourist attraction. However, I find that the natural beauty there is slowly disappearing.
What a pity! I think many people have the same feeling as me, for the beauty of nature is really wonderful and attractive!
What’s your opinion Please let me know.
Yours,
Li Hua
