The history of microbiology begins with a Dutch cloth maker named Antony van Leeuwenhoek, a man of no formal scientific education. In the late 1600s, Leeuwenhoek, inspired by the magnifying lenses (放大镜) he used to examine cloth, built some of the first microscopes. He developed a technique to improve the quality of tiny, rounded lenses, some of which could magnify an object up to 270 times. After removing some plaque from between his teeth and examining it under a les, Leuwenhoek found tiny twisting creatures, which he called “animalcules”.
His observations, which he reported to the Royal Society of London, are among the first descriptions of microbes (微生物). Leeuwenhoek discovered an entire universe invisible to human eyes. He found different microbes in samples of pond water, rain water and human blood. He gave the first description of red blood cells, observed plant issue, examined muscle, and investigated the life cycle of insects.
Nearly two hundred years later, Leeuwenhoek’s discovery of microbes helped French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur to develop his “theory of disease”. This concept suggested that disease originates from tiny organisms attacking and weakening the body. Pasteur’s theory later helped doctors to fight infectious diseases including anthrax, diphtheria, polio, smallpox, tetanus, and typhoid. All these breakthroughs were the result of Leeuwenhoek’s original work. Leeuwenhoek did not foresee this legacy.
In a 1716 letter, he described his contribution to science this way: “My work, which I’ve done for a long time, was not pursued in order to gain the praise I now enjoy, but chiefly from a strong desire for knowledge, which I notice resides in me more than in most other men. And therefore, whenever I found out anything remarkable, I have thought it my duty to put down my discovery on paper, so that the scientific community might be informed thereof.”
24. Which of the following best describes Leeuwenhoek

B. A talented scientist interested in finding a cure for a disease.
C. A bored cloth maker who accidentally made a major discovery.
D. A curious amateur who made pioneer studies of microbes.
25. What does the underlined phrase “this legacy” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Leeuwenhoek’s contribution B. Pasteur’s “theory of disease”
C. the discovery of microbes D. the origin of the tiny organisms

If you’re someone who looks in the mirror every day and concentrates only on any minor flaw (缺陷), you’re not alone. For many people, struggling with body image issues is a continuous battle.
“How hostile (恶意的) is the world to unattractive girls ” became a popular topic on Sina Weibo in March.
The topic met with agreement among many girls who shared their personal experiences. One internet user talked about how her friends would often cut her image out of group pictures because they thought she was too fat. What became clear was that this feeling of insecurity and distance was all too common.
What promotes this anxiety among young people
As the country’s economy has developed rapidly, people are more easy to be influenced by what others think of them, noted CGTN.
Greater time spent online also means greater exposure to advertisements promoting “paper-thin waists” or “chopstick legs”. Such unrealistic ideals only further young people’s anxiety and lead to an unhealthy mindset of perfectionism.
The anxiety over appearance and shape has pushed some people into physical and mental illness. According to Beat, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity, the idealization of thinness is a key factor in worsening the illness and preventing recovery. Some people even go through surgery just to achieve what they believe society considers “beautiful”.
But beauty doesn’t come from a makeup brush or a thinner waist. Growing taller and having perfect skin isn’t the solution to insecurity. The fact that every person is different is something to be celebrated.
A line from China’s first female monologue (独白剧) drama called Hear Her says it perfectly: “I am not perfect. Perfection is dull. I am perfect when I fully realize myself.”
28. What is a cause of young people’s anxiety about their body image according to the text
A. The standard promoted by some media.
B. The fierce competition they face.
C. The struggle they have experienced.
D. Their desire for easier success.
29. According to Beat, what plays a leading role in worsening people’s illness related to the anxiety over appearance and shape
A. The feeling of insecurity. B. Other people’s opinions.
C. The desire for thinness. D. The popularity of plastic surgery.
30. According to the text, what can people do to ease anxiety related to body image
A. Have plastic surgery. B. Accept their differences.
C. Work to realize their dream. D. Stop wearing makeup.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Avoid Misleading Advertisements
B. Stop Wearing Makeup
C. Improve Yourself
D. Celebrate Imperfection

Tree planting used to be regarded as an effective means of controlling climate change. Perhaps it’s time for us to rethink this practice.
Trees pull carbon dioxide or CO2 from the air. This effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere, making trees an important part of the fight against climate change. But trees only hold onto carbon dioxide as long as they’re alive. Once they die, trees will rot and release that CO2 back into the atmosphere.
Recent studies have found that trees around the world are growing faster than ever. Rising CO2, mainly due to burning fossil fuels, is probably driving that rapid growth, said Roel Brienen, a forest ecologist at the University of Leeds, UK. High levels of this gas are increasing temperatures, which in turn speeds tree growth in those areas, he added.
The faster trees grow, the faster they store carbon. It seems like good news. However, it is known that fast-growing tree species, in general, live shorter lives than their slow-growing relatives.
In order to see whether the growth-lifespan trade-off (生长和寿命之间的权衡) is a universal phenomenon, Brienen and his colleagues analyzed over 210,000 individual tree ring records of 110 tree species from more than 70,000 sites worldwide. “By measuring tree rings’ widths one can tell how fast trees grew, while counting rings provides information on tree ages and allows making inferences about trees’ maximum lifespan,” Brienen explained.
The team also created a computer program that modeled a forest and tweaked (轻微调整) the growth of the trees in this model. Early on, it showed that “the forest could hold more carbon as the trees grew faster”, Brienen reported. But after 20 years, these trees started dying and losing this extra carbon again. “We must understand that the only solution to bring down CO2 levels is to stop emitting (排放) it into the atmosphere,” said Brienen.
32. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. Climate change is affecting trees’ lifespan.
B. Studies found that trees that die sooner release more CO2.
C. Trees aren’t such a reliable solution to global warming.
D. Scientists are working on whether forests can hold more carbon.
33. What may be causing trees to grow faster
A. The formation of fossil fuels. B. The increase of atmospheric CO2.
C. Lower temperatures. D. The evolution of some species of trees.
34. What can people know by measuring tree rings’ widths
A. The speed of trees’ growth. B. The trees’ age.
C. The trees’ maximum lifespan. D. The trees’ habitats.
35. What do Roel Brienen’s words in the last paragraph probably mean
A. It is hard for trees to hold more carbon.
B. The CO2 level is impossible to bring down.
C. We must find other ways to store CO2.
D. We can only reduce CO2 by preventing its emissions.

Dark rain clouds were gathering in the sky. I was cycling as fast as I could to get home before the downpour. When I felt a few big drops on my head, I decided to head for a bus stop, about a hundred meters away. As I was nearing the bus stop, I saw a lady rushing towards it from the opposite direction, pulling a little boy behind her. The little boy was finding it hard to keep up with her, so, finally, she just picked him up and carried him.
Suddenly, a motorcycle roared past me, almost knocking me down. “Hey! Are you mad!” I shouted at the motorcyclist. He turned to look at me, and for a split second, I saw his face—cruel, with glaring eyes and menacing (阴森的) expression, most remarkably, a scar on his forehead. However, he just sped on. Then, I realized that he was heading right for the woman and little boy!
“Watch out! Watch out!” I shouted. I saw the lady turn to look at the motorcyclist, a look of utter terror spread over her face.
In an instant, the motorcyclist had reached the lady. He stretched out an arm and grabbed hold of her handbag, hitting her on the back at the same time. The impact sent the lady falling forward. The mother and child fell on the road, landing right in the path of a van.
“Stop! Stop!” I screamed at the van driver, waving my arms wildly in the air. Thankfully, the driver had seen what was happening. With a squeal of brakes, the van stopped a few meters from the spot where the mother and child lay sprawled (四肢伸开的) on the road.
I saw the lady crawling on the road towards the crying child. There was blood all over them. Throwing my bicycle to the side of the road, I ran to help them.

My Sports Story
I’ve been a sports nut since childhood. That’s why when my PE teacher presented me with the idea of joining the swimming team I decided to give it a shot. At first, I only regarded it as a hobby to enhance my physical fitness. But soon I found I became increasingly fascinated by it and persisted with practice on a daily basis. I even won the third place in a competition, which proved that hard work pays off. I will keep on swimming, perhaps for the rest of my life. And my ultimate goal is to be a swimming coach and help more people benefit from it.
故事续写:
Paragraph 1: By the time I got there, the van driver had reached them. He was gently holding the child and examining his limbs. Fortunately, the little boy was all right. “Don’t panic. You’ll be all right. We’ll rush you to a hospital,” I said to the woman, trying to relieve her anxiety. The lady could not walk, so the man carried her and settled her in his van. I carried the whimpering child to the van and landed him beside his mother. The man asked me to go along with them so that I could help make the police report.
Paragraph 2: A few days later, I received a phone call from the woman. I was informed that she had suffered only minor injuries from the incident and already been discharged from the hospital. “What’s more, the snatch thief was finally arrested and put into jail, thanks to your detailed description of his facial features.” she added. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your timely help.” Finishing the telephone call, I felt overwhelmed with delight from the bottom of my heart. The warm sunshine shone in. What a beautiful day!
