Let's look at some numbers...
135 million: Number of people facing starvation before COVID-19
270 million: Number of people on the brink of starvation today
47 million: Number of children under the age of 5 who suffer from severe and acute malnourishment
Last week, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its diligent efforts in fighting hunger.
The Nobel Committee praised the organization “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict."
What is the World Food Program
President Dwight D. Eisenhower started the World Food Programme in 1961 to provide food assistance through the United Nations. Since its beginning, the World Food Programme's mission has been to provide nutritional sustenance in communities tom apart by wars and natural disasters.
The WFP has distributed 15 billion allocations at low costs every year. On a daily basis, the WFP sends thousands of trucks, ships, and planes to deliver food to where it is needed most. In 2019, the WFP helped 97 million people in 88 countries, a new record.
The Challenges
In addition to pandemic (流行病)stresses, countries destroyed by war and armed conflict face heightened food shortage. The reverse happens as well, and food shortages can spark unrest and conflicts.
The WFP must also evaluate its own practices, such as incidents of cheating, where employees stole and sold donations and instances of “tied aid”, which is when humanitarian aid is connected to contracts. Against all these challenges, the World Food Programme stands as an organization with a noble cause in reducing hunger around the world. Winning the Nobel Peace Prize is not only a proof to that mission, but also a huge accomplishment that brings awareness to food insecurity hopefully attracting more people to help out.

Slipping down a steep slope, snowboarder Zhang Xu skied gracefully to a stop in a shower of white snow — one of a new generation of Chinese people learning winter sports in brand new indoor facilities.
“I fell in love with the sport, " said 25-year-old Zhang, who started coming to the Sunac Snow Centre in Chengdu in July, the same month it opened. Skiing used to be a relatively small sport in China but now it's more popular, and the credit for that is down to the Winter Olympics."
The 2022 Beijing Winter Games have inspired a boom in construction of snow tourists attractions; their numbers have rocketed nearly fourfold, fueled (助长)by demand from China's increasing middle class. Nearly 21 million people visited one last year, as the ability to spend more on leisure activities grows — average national disposable(可支配的)income has increased four times over the last two decades.
In provinces such as southwestern Sichuan, known for its hot and wet summers, there are plenty of mountains but little snow, so the best way for locals to learn to ski is inside.
“We are the first indoor ski resort in southwest China, " said Liu Jia, manager of the Sunac Snow Centre. Covering an area of 80, 800 square meters, the snow park is the largest of its kind in the world, though one in Shanghai, planned to open in the next 18 months, could be larger than that.
China has grand plans for this new interest - it has previously said it wants to put 10 percent of the population in China on skis in the 2022 Games. That's so large a figure that it would double the current global number of skiers.
24. What causes the popularity of skiing in China according to the passage

“If the world's health services were a country, it would be the fifth-largest carbon emitter(碳排放者)on the planet, " according to Health Care Without Harm, a global organization that advocates for ecologically sustainable (可持续的)healthcare practices.
Now, there are a growing number of healthcare workers who are improving their and their hospitals' environmental footprints.
Usually, nurses or assistants open all the equipment a doctor might need for a procedure. Staff in the UK's National Health Service Sustainable Development Unit have worked with suppliers to design medical equipment packs instead of individually wrapped products since 2015. This reduced packaging waste by 90% (2.6 tonnes a year), according to an article published in the Nursing Times.
In 2019, Carilion Clinic in Virginia started to purchase reprocessed products. While controlling infection in a hospital setting is paramount, equipment such as medical clothing and blood pressure pumps can be reused if processed correctly, saving hospitals from tossing out tonnes of waste. If these measures are effective, it will be more important to reduce pollution.
In light of the pandemic, concern over the sustainability has been put aside, mainly because of the need for continuous air circulation, greater hospitalization capacity and disposable equipment like gloves and masks. However, the pandemic has also brought some positive changes.
Shortage of protective equipment in the healthcare system pushed hospitals to be more strict with its use. Appointments have moved online, reducing unnecessary travel and the carbon emissions associated with them. Sara Wohlford, manager of Carilion Clinic, said she is seeing more willingness to engage in sustainability practices.
28. What is the purpose of “ Health Care Without Harm”?
A. To improve sustainability practices of healthcare
B. To help the growth of global economic.
C. To reduce the air pollution of environment.
D. To find more methods to reduce the consumption of resource.

A. The equipment like gloves and masks sells well.
B. People will increase unnecessary travel and the carbon emissions.
C. The healthcare system is short of protective equipment.
D. The hospitals are pushed to use their protective equipment strictly.
3O.What is the meaning of the underlined word “paramount" in paragraph 4
A. impossible B. sustainable C. practical D. vital
31. What's the best title of the passage
A. There are a growing number of healthcare workers
B. Hospitals try to restrict astonishing emissions
C. Healthcare waste has a terrible influence on us
D. Sustainable development is our future choice

On July 1,1874, the Remington typewriter hit the market, with the earliest version of what would become the keyboard layout we still use today.
There's an old legend about the QWERTY keyboard, dating back to at least 1977. In fact, the layout was designed to help people type faster.
The QWERTY layout is attributed to an American inventor named Christopher Latham Sholes, and it made its debut in its earliest form on July 1,1874 .
Sholes had been for some years developing the typewriter, filing a patent application in October 1867. However, the original key layout, with the second half of the alphabet in order on the top row and the first half in order on the bottom row, led to some problems. The keys were fixed on metal arms, which would jam if the keys were pressed in too rapid succession.
Sholes5 solution was separating commonly used letter pairings, such as "ST", to avoid these jams, effectively allowing the typist to type faster, rather than slower.
He went through several design iterations(新版软件),attempting to bring the typewriter to market. When he sold the design to Remington in 1873, the QWERTY layout looked like this: 23456789-,
QWE.TYIUOP
ZSDFGHJKLM
AX&CVBN ;R
Remington made several adjustments, and launched the Sholes and Glidden typewriter on July 1,1874. Its keyboard layout was almost the same QWERTY keyboard layout we use today, with a few minor differences. 1 and 0 were left out to help shave down production costs, on the basis that these numerals could be produced using other keys, such as a capital I and a capital O. Remington also swapped the R and. keys.
The 0 was added fairly early on, but some keyboards well into the 1970s were still missing the number 1.
The first Remington typewriter sold poorly (it could only type in upper-case letters, was expensive at $125 per unit, and often broke). The updated Remington 2 typewriter, introduced in 1878, changed this. Not only did it correct some of the defects of the Sholes and Glidden machine, but the launch allowed Remington to sell the typewriter business to three former employees. Bringing in marketing expertise, the new Remington Standard Typewriter Company was able to bring the typewriter to commercial success.
32. Which of the following is true about the Remington typewriter
A. Its earliest keyboard layout is still used today.
B. Its keyboard layout is arranged alphabetically.
C. It reduced the typist's typing efficiency.
D. Its first generation of products sold surprisingly.
33. What is the problem with the original key layout
A. Its keys are fixed on metal arms.
B. Its key metal arms always get stuck.
C. Its key design has no capital I and O.
D. It was patented in October 1867.
34. What is the reason for the success of the Remington typewriter
A. Expensive price. B. Considerate service.
C. Professional marketing knowledge. D. Gorgeous appearance design.
35. Which of the following is the main idea of this article
A. The marketing history of keyboard.
B. The value of ancient typewriters.
C. The development and change of keyboard.
D. The improvement of typist efficiency.

Which comes first in choosing a major Interests or Job opportunities
Recently, we had a discussion about how to decide on major in our English class. Some students think they should study a major with more job opportunities while others think that they should build the choice on their interests. As a senior student to graduate, I hold that interest is the top priority in choosing a major. The reasons are as follows.
First, you can enjoy learning only when you are truly interested in it. After all, interest is the best teacher. Moreover, your independent exploration ability will be inspired when you are keen on your subject, thus getting twice the result with half the effort. Last but not least, many majors that seem to have better job opportunities might not be the case after graduation.
Taking all the factors into account , you’d better base your major choice on your interest. Only in this way will you lead a fruitful college life and get well prepared for your future.

Text 10
M: Trade unions or labor unions first appeared in Europe as a result of the industrial revolution. Workers were at the mercy of the employers. They were underpaid, lacked any sort of training, and were sometimes mistreated. When trade unions emerged, they became powerful organizations. Workers got together and organized themselves to make sure that employers do not exploit them any more. Nowadays, the main goal of trade unions is to negotiate labor contracts with employers. The leaders of trade unions speak on behalf of workers and are mainly worried about wages, working conditions and the laws that govern the hiring, firing and promotion of workers. In some cases unions may call for strikes to force employers to negotiate a deal or they may promote political legislation favorable to the interests of their members or workers as a whole. To achieve this aim they may support and get closely linked to particular political parties. Some people blame unions for creating tense atmosphere between employers and employees.
