Self-driving cars might make your future travel a lot more pleasant, but they won’t reduce traffic.
Car producers have mentioned that traffic reduction is one of the many advantages of having self-driving cars on the road. The idea is that self-driving cars will reduce accidents caused by human mistakes. But experts say self-driving cars’ influence on traffic will probably be bad.
Lew Fulton, a co-director at UC Davis’ Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), said that self-driving cars won’t fix traffic problems unless a pricing system is put in place that discourages self-driving cars. For example, many companies are interested in programming self-driving cars to do something, which could increase traffic on the road, Fulton said.
Massachusetts lawmakers have already suggested introducing a tax (税) on driverless cars. It calls for at least $0.025 per mile.
Traffic jams (堵塞) could also worsen as companies like Lucid Motors try to produce self-driving cars with reclining seats (可躺座椅). People may choose to live farther outside of cities if they can travel in cars that allow them to sleep and relax. But that increases the number of people travelling in and out of cities during rush hour, Fulton said.
Without the cost of a driver, Fulton said he worries self-driving Ubers or Lyfts will become so cheap it will be hard to push people to choose car-sharing services like uberPOOL. “I think it’s going to take some kind of pricing system that discourages cars without a single passenger,” he said.
Some cities have already started programmes that discourage people from taking car trips alone. For example, Chicago and New York City have set up lanes (车道) that single-passenger cars must pay some money to use. That money increases during rush hour.
28. What do car producers think of self-driving cars
A. They are safe.
B. They are fast.
C. They save buyers money.
D. They increase traffic slightly.
29. What do Massachusetts lawmakers suggest
A. Introducing a tax on car producers.
B. Increasing the selling price of self-driving cars.
C. Pushing up the running costs of self-driving cars.
D. Calling for drivers to avoid travelling during rush hour.
30. What will happen if there are self-driving cars with reclining seats
A. More people will live in city centres.
B. People will spend less money on transport.
C. People are likely to travel longer distances.
D. There will be lighter traffic during rush hour.
31. What’s the best title for the text
A. What cars will we drive in the future
B. Where will we travel with self-driving cars
C. How can self-driving cars solve traffic problems
D. Why self-driving cars could be terrible for traffic

Ever wondered why fresh fruits and vegetables are the first thing you see in stores or why the bread and milk are so far away Supermarkets spend millions of dollars researching consumer (消费者) behaviour in order to develop ways to make you buy more in their stores.
CHOICE magazine takes a look at some of the more common tricks to help you avoid spending more money next time you go shopping.
Experts say turning to the right when you walk into a shop is connected with most people’s preference for using their right hand.
Dr Paul Harrison, expert at Deakin University, says a store’s entry (入口) is not the only important point. “Research in the US has shown that shoppers who travel in an anti-clockwise (逆时针方向的) direction will spend about two dollars more per trip than clockwise shoppers.”
Research made on shoppers’ in-store movements suggests people travel to some aisles (过道) only. The most common trip to travel in stores is around the outside circle, walking in and out of the aisles as needed. As a result, the ends of each aisle are where the store makes the most money.
When you enter a big supermarket fresh fruits and vegetables are in the first shopping area. Although it’s not wise to first put fruits and vegetables into your shopping basket, this department is set to make the shoppers feel that it’s fresh and healthy. People who use the fresh food areas are also likely to spend more money in the store.
By setting up different “marketplace” areas, it feels as though we’ve visited several different stores where we can get everything we need rather than a single big shop. Each of these areas has different lighting and floor coverings. “It’s all about creating a market-like feel,” says Harrison. “Areas making and selling bread, apart from smelling good, give the impression that the supermarket can be trusted. It’s like they’re saying, ‘You can trust us because we make food.’”
32. Why do people turn to the right when entering a shop
A. People are mostly right-handed.
B. It’s easier for them to walk in a circle.
C. Fresh food is often placed on the right.
D. Shopping baskets are usually on the right.
33. What does the research in the US find
A. Most shoppers walk anti-clockwise.
B. Clockwise walkers are often big shoppers.
C. A store’s entry is the most important point.
D. Walking directions influence consuming behaviour.
34. As for aisles, what do supermarket managers most care about
A. The ends.
B. The middle.
C. How long they are.
D. How wide they are.
35. What impression does a supermarket try to give shoppers by making each area different
A. It is fresh.
B. It is healthy.
C. It covers a big area.
D. It offers a wide choice.

Living in a dorm (宿舍) this year Here are some survival suggestions:
Don’t just shout. Talk it out.
Even if you knew your roommate before, living with him or her will be completely different. The key to making it work is communication. 36 If you still have problems after talking, turn to your teacher for help — especially if you think you need to change rooms or roommates.
Make your room represent you.
Your dorm room isn’t just the place where you sleep or study. It’s your home. 37 Show your personality. Put up the posters your mom never let you put up at home. Do whatever you can to make your room a comfortable place so you feel right at home.

39
One of the great things about living in a dorm is that you’ll probably meet people from other places who were raised differently than you were. Don’t laugh at people because of their differences. 40 You never know that guy or girl in your dorm might turn out to be one of your lifelong friends!

选做题
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A
It’s amazing to consider the fact that today, in western Michigan, people speak more than 120 languages. And it’s even more amazing for me to be part of helping many of those immigrant (移民的) families.
My family and I immigrated to the US in 1975. We’ve lived for years in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Early on, I was interested in becoming a schoolteacher, but language prevented me from doing well on tests. Most of the teachers were very kind, but one, pointing to a low score I had made, laughed at me, “You should have done better; you’ve been here a year already.”
So I took English classes while continuing my education, and I graduated (毕业) in 1980 from Grand Valley State University as a licensed practical nurse. First I worked in a hospital, but I found the work didn’t fit me. Then I worked with the United Nations helping immigrants and, later, worked as an interpreter (口译者) and translator.
Realizing there was a growing need here for my skill set, I started a business to help non-English-speakers. That became my lifework. I employ some 250 interpreters and translators, some of whom are gifted in as many as seven languages.
We are found in any place where words are spoken or written — schools, hospitals, workplaces, etc. We mainly provide interpretation and written translation services. Our expertise in rare languages and dialects (方言) sets us apart; we can also translate papers in 30 different languages.
Mercy Health is a health-care provider in western Michigan. It has praised our professionalism and quickness. We provide translation for languages often considered difficult to support — from Albanian and Assyrian to Zaghawa and Zulu. Besides, we can field 16 languages spoken in Myanmar and American Sign Language.
Especially satisfying is serving the nearby Kentwood Public Schools. Twice a year, we partner with mothers and fathers attending parent-teacher meetings. We deal with 450 such meetings in just two or three days.
1. What made the author fail to become a schoolteacher at first
A. Her skin color.
B. Her English level.
C. Her poor education.
D. Her family background.
2. What’s the purpose of the author’s business
A. Offering jobs to immigrants.
B. Serving public schools for immigrants.
C. Solving language problems for immigrants.
D. Providing immigrants with language lessons.
3. What does Mercy Health think of the services offered by the author’s team
A. They should be appreciated.
B. They need some improvement.
C. They should be offered outside Michigan.
D. They should get the attention of the public.
4. What does the underlined word “field” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean
A. Point out.
B. Deal with.
C. Depend on.
D. Write down.

B
Carmakers now allow drivers to make phone calls, use email, and text, etc. Cars used to have a few buttons (按钮). Some cars now have as many as 50 buttons.
“It’s adding complex information at drivers’ fingertips without often considering whether it’s a good idea to put it at their fingertips,” University of Utah professor David Strayer said. That complexity increases the time drivers spend trying to use the systems.
The car industry says that mobile phones are not allowed while driving and navigation devices (导航设备) were not made to be used while driving. But the systems “are developed to be used in the driving environment and require drivers’ attention that is comparable to turning on the radio, which has always been considered acceptable behavior while driving,” said Wade Newton, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
But Jake Nelson, AAA’s director for traffic safety research, said drivers testing all 30 of the 2017 model year cars took their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel while using the systems. The test drivers touch screens and other technologies to make calls, send texts, turn on the radio, or program navigation all while driving.
Researchers said 23 of the 30 cars were considered “very high” or “high” in terms of the attention they required from drivers. It takes drivers about 40 seconds to program navigation systems. Research made before has shown that drivers who took their eyes from the road for just two seconds double their risk of a crash.
In 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made voluntary (自愿的) safety guidelines to carmakers. The guidelines suggest that automakers lock out the ability to program navigation systems while a car is moving. However, the ability to program navigation while driving was allowed in 12 cars in the study. The guidelines also suggest carmakers prevent drivers from texting while driving, but three-quarters of the cars tested allow drivers to text while the car is moving.
5. What was David Strayer’s attitude toward the systems
A. He was interested in them.
B. He was hopeful of them.
C. He was uncertain about them.
D. He was dissatisfied with them.
6. What did Wade Newton say about the systems
A. They were good choices for drivers.
B. They couldn’t be used while driving.
C. They were unacceptable to the public.
D. They were mainly used for navigation.
7. Which of the following might Jake Nelson agree with about the systems
A. They were risky but worthwhile.
B. They were quick and easy to use.
C. They saved drivers a lot of money.
D. They increased the risk of accidents.
8. What can be inferred about voluntary safety guidelines
A. They are quite welcome.
B. They are not properly made.
C. They are not strictly followed.
D. They are very helpful to drivers.

One possible version:
Being a teacher has long been my dream and I believe this dream will come true in ten years.
As a teacher, I will surely be popular among students because I will teach them using proper methods which will make them relaxed while studying. What’s more, I will offer to teach in a school in a mountain area which is in need of teachers. If possible, I will have my own family there and help more children to achieve their dreams.
I believe I will never regret being a teacher and will live a meaningful life.
