When we were young, we didn't know what we would overcome. Growing up, I came across a difficulty I had to be patient to overcome. Then I realized if I continued to let the problem hold me back, my dream could never come true. So I changed my focus.
At the age of 13, I fell ill. This illness lasted three years and I missed a lot of schooling. Doctors tried their best to help me, but in the end it was something I just had to be used to. At high school, I had a turning point. I discovered my gift for writing and decided that I wouldn't let anything hold me back anymore. At that time, I suffered and bottled up a lot to the point where writing became my escape from it all.
During my years at college, I had many lessons to catch up on, so I became focused and determined to complete my college courses in three years instead of four due to my illness. At the end of my junior year, I became an honor roll(光荣榜) student. Seeing what I had accomplished, I realized that having disadvantages didn't mean it was impossible to achieve success.
By becoming a writer, I have also become a reader. While performing community service in the library, I would read to those less fortunate or unable to read. From pre-school children to the elderly, I enjoy my time reading to all ages. It's pleasing to see the awesome expressions on their faces as the words became a vision in their minds. Giving back is one of the greatest gifts I can give in life. It inspires me to write in a way people can learn from.

Everglades National Park is located in the state of Florida. It is the largest wilderness in the entire country and makes up 25% of the wetlands in the state. The Everglades is home to several rare and endangered species. It is also the third largest national park in the US, after Death Valley National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Each year, about 1 million tourists visit the park. On a global level, it has been announced as a World Heritage Site.
Unlike most other national parks, Everglades National Park was created to protect an ecosystem from being damaged. In 1947, President Harry Truman spoke at the official opening of Everglades National Park, saying the goal of creating the park was to protect forever a wild area that could never be replaced.
10,000 different islands make up Everglades National Park. There exists natural wildlife on each of these islands. The Everglades is home to about 30 species that are endangered. In addition, more than 350 bird species and 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish live within the park. The Everglades is also home to 40 species of mammals (哺乳动物).
There are many ways to explore the Everglades. Visitors can see alligators (短吻鳄) while hiking the Anhinga Trail. The Everglades is one of the few places on Earth where freshwater alligators and saltwater crocodiles live in the same area. Visitors using airboats are likely to see large groups of birds. Some visitors might enjoy riding bicycles through Shark Valley. Others may want to move slowly through the water where they can see insects and wildlife closely.

The life of an actor appears attractive and many young people dream about becoming one. But the truth is, it is very hard work. If you're successful, there are deadlines to be met, appointments to keep and the press to deal with. If you're not successful, then life is extremely tough.
I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra cash to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I played extras in many crowd scenes and became a confident participant in a lot of TV commercials for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder.
I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go in to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came along the corridor with a piece of paper. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put the paper in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I unfolded the paper, full of expectation. To my surprise, it was an audition (试演) for a clown (小丑) for the Canadian circus. I couldn't stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film!
When I was at drama school, there had been a course in acrobatics and clown tricks. I had gained top marks in this course for originality and daring. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I'd had in mind when I enrolled in drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the make-up. I had the opportunity to travel the world and I was more than an actor, I was an entertainer as well. I had visited over 32 different countries and entertained millions of people.

D. to put a notice on the notice board
53.Which of the following can best describe the author's feeling when he unfolded the paper
A. Extremely frightened. B. Nervous but excited.
C. Very worried. D. Grateful but disappointed.
54.From the whole passage, we can tell that the writer is ___________.
A. sad that he was not a famous actor
B. happy to travel the world
C. very content with his life
D. feeling very strange to be a clown
55.Which of the following would be the best title
A. The Life of a TV Actor B. More than an Actor
C. Acrobatics and Clown Tricks D. Going to Drama School

M: I can't. I have a big maths test tomorrow. I have to prepare for it.
Text 3

M: I was absent. I'll ask one of my classmates to send it to me.
Text 4
W: If we want to win the game this Friday, we need to come up with a plan now. They beat us every year.
M: We need to use teamwork more. John is our best player, but we can't give him the ball every time.

M: I'm sorry, madam. But our store policy is not to give out change unless you buy something.
W: OK.
Text 6
W: Tim, I saw you running from the bus stop this morning. Your mother and father wouldn't be happy seeing you do that.
M: I was late for school though.
W: You need to be more careful when you cross the street. You need to walk during the right time and in the right places.
M: But I'm very fast.
W: Are you even listening to me It is dangerous. It is also against the law.
M: But I hate waiting for the lights to change and the cars to pass by. I don't want to be late.

Text 7
W: Sorry, Jim. I won't be able to make it to the dinner tomorrow night. I'll be busy volunteering at the library during that time.
M: That's interesting, Carol. Most people I know volunteer by collecting garbage or something. What do you do at the library when you volunteer Are they short on employees who put away books
W: Nothing like that. I just read the children's books and act out some of the stories for them. It's very fun and it doesn't take long, maybe one or two hours.
M: How often do you do that
W: I do it on Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week. You should come help me with it one time.
M: That sounds like fun. Can I pick the stories I want to read I hate to try and act out a story I never read.
W: You can read any book as long as it's on the library's list.
Text 8
M: I was reading about superfoods today. They are fruits, vegetables and other foods that are supposed to be extra healthy.
W: That's interesting. Which foods are they I suppose rice is high on the list. We certainly eat a lot of that here in China.

W: Oh well, I suppose we eat plenty of them. Why are these foods so healthy
M: It's said that they can reduce the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers.
W: Maybe I will start including them in our meals. Are there any foods on the list that we don't have yet
M: Nuts and greens are something we already eat plenty of. And although our type of rice—the white kind—isn't on the list, brown rice is.
W: Then I think we will switch to that to keep the family healthy. Superfoods sound like a very tasty way to keep fit.
Text 9
M: I can't believe this. I have been on the phone with my bank all day and they still haven't fixed my problem.

W: That's terrible. Did they take a lot of money
M: Yes, and I am very upset because the bank is not helping me quickly. I have talked to many different managers already.
W: Doesn't the bank's owner need to make the decision to give you your money back
M: No. I just have to prove that these purchases were not made by me.
W: I hope you can fix this problem soon. Something similar happened to my husband's mother recently. She was tricked into giving away some important information over the phone.
M: I think the person who stole my information got it from the Internet. I bought a collection of movies recently. I won't be doing that again unless the website is sure to be safe. It's honestly my fault for being careless.
W: You can never be too careful. Well, your problem is inspiring me to look into protecting my account better. I think I can pay my bank more to help me.

W: Listen up, you two. We need to leave this house before the sun rises tomorrow. Your father will be home soon from work and once he gets home, we will be packing our bags. We need you guys to do the same thing tonight. I want everything you're going to bring put out in the living room before you go to bed. Before you pack everything though, you need to put aside the clothes for tomorrow. I don't want to wait for you to search for other clothes or to unpack your bag to get something. Our flight is at 7 am, and it will take about a half hour to get to the airport from here. We'll probably need another hour to get through security. Also, I know I said that we would go out for our meal tonight, but there is just too much to do. I asked your father to pick up some Chinese food for dinner instead. I can't be bothered to cook something since I just cleaned everything. If you want a specific dish at the restaurant, you will need to call your father. Otherwise, he will just pick up something that we can all share. Are you clear on everything I said
