Beethoven was born in the German city of Bonn in December 1770. His exact birth date is
unknown. Both his grandfather and father were musicians. Beethoven’s father, Johann, wanted his son
to be a child of great talent (才能) like Mozart, who wrote his first piece of music at the age of five.
When Beethoven was seven, his father gave his first public piano performance.
Johann told people that his son was six years old, because that was how old Mozart had been when
he first played in public. However, it wasn’t until Beethoven’s teenage years that he achieved some
success. He played music with the Bonn Opera and in 1787 went to Vienna, the capital of Austria, to
study with Mozart. After hearing Beethoven play, it is said that Mozart told his friends, “This young
man will make a great name for himself in the world.”
At the start of the 19th century, Beethoven’s fame(名声) was growing across Europe. However,
Beethoven was completely deaf by 1819 and had to use a notepad to communicate. Although he
couldn’t hear anything, he continued to write music and produced some of his most famous works. In
1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony(交响乐) was performed for the first time. The piece ends with a
choir(合唱团) singing the words to the poem Ode to Joy by the German poet Friedrich Schiller. This
was the first time a singing choir was used in a symphony. When the performance finished, Beethoven
couldn’t hear people applauding (鼓掌). One of the singers had to turn him round so that he could see
how excited people were.
Beethoven died on 26 March 1827 aged 56. Around 20,000 people attended his funeral (葬礼) in
Vienna, the city in which he had made his name. In 1845, a statue (雕像) of him was built in Bonn,
where he had been born.
24. What wish did Johann have for Beethoven
A. To learn to play the piano from Mozart.
C. To hold a concert at the age of seven.
25. What did Mozart think of Beethoven

C. Beethoven needed more time to practice.

A. He lost his hearing.
B. To have a great talent for music.
D. To succeed at the same age as Mozart.
B. Beethoven was more talented than him.
D. Beethoven would be as productive as him.
B. He was laughed at in performance.
C. His Ninth Symphony became a hit.
27. The author develops the text mainly
D. His musical works were first played in public.

With cross-culture communication becoming more and more frequent, the differences between
Chinese and Western culture have become more obvious, especially the differences between table
manners.
My mother-in-law is one of the sweetest elderly ladies I know. Sometimes she is too kind, which is
why our cultures sometimes clash (冲突). She always wants me to eat more, and often she puts things in
my bowl. It is a very kind gesture, but Western people are not always comfortable with it. If you, put a
piece of Peking duck in my rice bowl, you probably think I should be pleased about it. But, how do you
know I don’t prefer beef or vegetables Why do you think I want a piece of duck You are showing
your friendship to me, but you are taking away my independence.
In China, if you are eating something that has small pieces of bone, you may spit (吐出) those
pieces out and put them on the table beside your bowl. In my country this is considered uncultured. We
prefer to avoid taking anything out of our mouths at the table, but if it cannot be avoided we would
prefer to put it inside some paper. In fact, Americans hardly ever eat dishes with bones. When I tell my
Chinese friends about this, someone always asks, “What about KFC ” It is not uncommon for us to eat
something with one large bone, I explain, but we just dislike seeing tiny pieces of bone from inside a
person’s mouth.
Whenever I go back to America, I have to remember not to put my elbows (手肘) on the table. I
don’t know why we consider it impolite. Sometimes it’s just comfortable, and since it isn’t a bad table
manner in China, I usually do it here. But, when I am with a first-time visitor to China, I try to
remember to keep my elbows off the table.
My long stay in China has deepened my understanding of the many differences between Chinese
and American table manners. Indeed, it is not easy to fully understand each other’s culture. We should
just do our best not to offend(冒犯) each other and try to enjoy eating together.
28. What does the author expect his mother-in-law to do at the table
A. Allow him to help himself.
C. Offer him more vegetables.
B. Put food in his bowl.
D. Show more friendliness to him.
29. Which of the following is seldom seen in the US
A. Serving food without bones.
B. Eating meat with a large bone.
D. Cutting food into small pieces.
C. Spitting bones out onto the table.
30. What do Americans think of putting elbows on the table
A. It is funny.
B. It is unacceptable.
D. It is a gesture of kindness.
C. It is good manners.
31. What does the author mainly discuss in the text
A. The great importance of politeness at the table.
B. His very good impression of his mother-in-law.
C. The culture shock happening frequently in China and the US.
D. Differences between Chinese and American table manners.

At some point, all baby birds have to leave the nest (巢). But songbirds (鸣禽) often push their
young out long before it’s actually time for them to spread their wings and fly, research from the
University of Illinois finds.
“From what we can tell, instead of physically pushing their young out, bird parents do this by
decreasing the amount of food they give them to force them out through hunger, and by communicating
with them directly to encourage them to leave,” says lead author Todd Jones, a doctoral student.
The study shows that the young birds who were forced to leave early were less likely to survive
than those that stayed in the nest. “Birds that leave the nest at a younger age have less developed wings,
and as a result often die before adulthood. Those that stay home longer can fly away when they finally
leave and are more likely to survive,” says Jones.
Then why would songbirds push out their babies before they can fly “Rather than leaving all their
eggs (or in this case young birds) in one basket, bird parents can get their young to leave the nest earlier
and spatially (空间地) separate all the young birds so that the probability of all their young being eaten
becomes nearly zero,” Jones says.
For the young birds that want to stick around, being forced out of their nest might seem like a cruel
(残酷的) parental tactic (策略). With no other choices, the little birds have to begin making their own
way in the world, with the hope that one day they’ll do the same thing to their own young.
“Our study suggests this tactic finally improves parental fitness and is likely passed on from
generation (一代) to generation,” Jones says.
32.What would songbirds do to get their young out of the nest
A. Show no care to them.
B. Physically push them out.
D. Attract them out with songs.
C. Stop giving them enough food.
33.What can we learn about the young birds forced out of the nest
A. They will try to find another nest.
C. They will be willing to come back.
B. They will learn to fly very quickly.
D. They will have less chance of survival.
34. Why do songbirds make their young leave before they are ready
A. To lead an easy life themselves.
B. To make space for their reproduction.
D. To avoid losing all their young to enemies.
C. To encourage independence in their young.
35.What does the underlined phrase “the same thing” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Protecting young birds from dangers.
B. Forcing young birds out of the nest early.
C. Punishing young birds if they do something wrong.
D. Letting young birds stay in the nest until they grow up.

“Ring! Ring! Ring!” My alarm clock rang. I opened my heavy eyelids (眼皮) and suddenly
remembered that day, Monday, was the day of the class trip to Pulau Ubin with Miss Lee, our science
teacher. I sprang(跳起) out of bed and began to brush my teeth. After that, I changed into my sportswear
and had a quick breakfast of ham and bacon. Then, I began to walk, towards my school to meet my
classmates.
Miss Lee gave us some instructions and divided us into six groups. Then we set off for our
destination. An hour later, we arrived at Pulau Ubin. My best friend, Janet and some other classmates were
in my group, the sixth group. As we walked along, we saw a stranger walking in front of us. He was eating
a banana and speaking on the phone loudly. We tried to ignore him and admired the beautiful view.
Suddenly, I saw a white cat on the tree watching us. “Oh, there is a cute cat!” I shouted to Janet,
pointing at the cat. All of our group members stopped and wanted to see where it was.
Instead of hearing my classmates talking about the cat, I heard a cry. I turned around and saw Janet
falling down a slope (斜坡) and into a deep lake. Janet had slipped (滑倒) on the banana peel that the
man had thrown on the ground and rolled down the slope into the lake!
As she did not know how to swim, she could hardly breathe in the water and was drowning (溺水),
which made my blood run cold. Miss Lee was walking with the first group and 1 was the only one in
my class that was good at swimming. So I first asked one of our group members to tell Miss Lee what
was happening and call for an ambulance (救护车) as soon as possible. And then I carefully went down
the slope and dived into the water.

A。 After hearing Beethoven play, it is said that Mozart told his friends, “This young man will make a great name for himself in the world.” make a name for oneself意为“成名;出名”。
C。 In1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was performed for the first time以及When the performance finished, Beethoven couldn’t hear people applauding. One of the singers had to turn him round so that he could see how excited people were可知,《第九交响曲》一经演奏便大获成功。

由第二段中的by decreasing the amount of food they give them to force them out through hunger可知,鸣禽通过限制给雏鸟的食物量来迫使其尽早离巢。
33. D。 由第三段中的the young birds who were forced to leave early were less likely to survive than those that stayed in the nest及Jones所说的Birds that leave the nest at a younger age have less developed wings, and as a result often die before adulthood可知,早早离巢的雏鸟比那些待在鸟巢里的雏鸟存活的几率要低。
34. D。 由第四段中Jones所说的bird parents can get their young to leave the nest earlier and spatially separate all the young birds so that the probability of all their young being eaten becomes nearly zero可推断,鸣禽提早让雏鸟离巢是为了避免整窝雏鸟被捕食。
35. B。 结合第五段中的being forced out of their nest might seem like a cruel parental tactic 及最后一段中Jones所说的this tactic finally improves parental fitness and is likely passed on from generation to generation可知,幸存的雏鸟很可能向父母学习,也让自己的后代提早离巢,而且这种行为很可能会代代相传。
Try to always be calm when dealing with your pets, whatever they’ve done. If you’re upset at them, take a moment to calm yourself down first.(保持冷静。不管你的宠物做了什么,都要保持冷静。如果你对他们感到不安,先花点时间让自己冷静下来)”可知,本段主要说明了要冷静,F选项中keep calm对应上文中calm yourself down。故F选项“深呼吸是保持冷静的有效方法”符合语境,故选F。
37.根据后文“Set aside time to practice these rules with your pet each day. If your pet breaks a rule, use body language to let them know it is not okay.(每天抽出时间和你的宠物一起练习这些规则。如果你的宠物违反了规则,用肢体语言让他们知道这是不对的)”可知,后文提到了和宠物练习规则,C选项中rules对应后文中these rules。故C选项“制定规则并坚持执行”符合语境,故选C。
38.根据后文“Just be in the same room with them. Let them be near you while you make dinner, watch TV or read a book. The more you’re around one another, the better chances you have of becoming friends.(和他们待在一个房间里就行了。当你做饭、看电视或读书时,让他们在你身边。你们在一起的时间越长,就越有可能成为朋友)”可知,后文提到了和宠物待在一个房间里,即经常和宠物在一起,故B选项“经常和你的宠物呆在一起”符合语境,故选B。
39.根据上文“Never use violent actions or language. If your pet does something you disagree with, don’t physically hurt them or scream at them.(不要使用暴力行为或语言。如果你的宠物做了一些你不同意的事情,不要伤害它们或对它们尖叫)”以及后文“However, what you really want is not their fear but love.(然而,你真正想要的不是它们的恐惧,而是爱)”可知,上文提到不要使用暴力行为或语言,后文则提到了宠物的恐惧,可知伤害宠物会让宠物恐惧。故D选项“伤害它们会使它们害怕”符合语境,故选D。
40.根据上文“See the world through your pet’s eyes. Be empathetic(设身处地的) when dealing with your pet. You don’t know what’s going on in its mind. So it’s best to try to read its body language and imagine what it must be going through.(通过宠物的眼睛看世界。
41.A。根据本句中的an orange glow coming from an open door of the garage可知,此处需要填一个和“发现”相关的单词,由于目标对象是光,故noticed(注意到)符合语境。
42. C。由上文中的save his 1l-year-old neighbor及本句中的the garage which was owned by his可知,光应是从“邻居(neighbor)”开着的车库门中发出的。
43. B。
44. D。由本句中的Upon closer及the orange glow was a fire 可知,通过近距离的“查看(checking)”之后,Vivoni很快“意识到(realized)”这个橘色的光是火。
45. D。由本句中的to report the fire及下文中的said Jeff Smith of the Mansfield Fire Department可知,Vivoni在敲门无人应答之后跑回了自己家中“打电话 (called)”给911报告火情。
46. C。 Moments later the teen returned to the burning home及that the flames had grown in the garage可知,当Vivoni返回起火地点时只“看到(seeing)”火势更猛了。
47. B。由上文可知,火势越来越大,但是消防员还没到,结合本句中的he made a split-second及to run into the home可, Vivoni立刻做出了进入起火房屋的“决定(decision)”。
48. C。由文章首句中的save his 11-year-old neighbor及本句中的a sleeping neighbor, 11, on the sofa可知,Vivoni在进入房屋后立刻就“发现了(found)”一个正躺在沙发上睡觉的邻居。
50. A。由本句中的who was home及just as the boy’s parents returned home可知,在Vivoni把这个孩子救出来的时候,孩子的父母才回来,因此,着火的时候这个孩子应是“独自(alone)”在家的。
51. B。
52. D。由本句中的It’s not very及in this day that a young man of 17 years old would have the …
53. C。由本句中的life-saving work should be left to firefighters 及常识可知,消防队“建议(suggested)”救人这种事还是应该留给消防员去做。require(要求)和order(命令)口气过于强硬,不符合语境。
54. B。
55. A。 It was reported that luckily no one got injured可知,很幸运没人在这场火灾中受伤。

Today is June 9th and just to finish the local news, I’m going to tell you about the new sports centre. It’s almost finished and will be open to the public next week on June 16th. The pool isn’t quite finished, however, and won’t be open until 21st June. There are facilities for indoor sports—that’s volleyball, basketball and table tennis—and outdoor sports like football and tennis. The new swimming pool is 50 metres long, which is twice the size of the old pool. And for those of you who want to get fit, you should book an appointment with an advisor in our fitness centre. If you want to book a place in a class, you can phone or sign in at the information desk. Our prices compare very well with other sports centres in the area. You can pay a monthly fee and then an entrance fee per visit. It’s a good idea to book as it will get very busy on Saturdays and Sundays. Half-price entrance will be available on Wednesdays for students. Here’s their website ...
