I have a story about raising free-range(放养的) kids. This past Columbus Day,my husband and I went fishing with some friends on their boat while our 10 and 8-year-olds were in school. We left the house all at the same time, about 7 am.My children walked to and from school every day and we knew they were OK for a couple hours by themselves anyway so we told them to go inside after school and we would be home around 4 pm.
The adults decided to go fishing offshore, since it was a beautiful day in the normally still very humid Texas fall.At around 2 pm we started back to shore and wouldn’t you know,we ran out of gas.We were out of cellphone service, even 911 wasn’t working, and we didn’t have a radio so we were stuck waiting for someone to come by.We were out there until 10 pm.All the while my children were at home, expecting us to return shortly after they got home.At about 7 pm,when it was getting dark,my 10-year-old thought something might be wrong so she walked to each house on the street until someone answered the door and asked them what they should do.This was how we were found by the game warden and “rescued”.
Talking with that neighbor the next day,I never took such pride in my children. This neighbor explained to me how calm both my children were when explaining the situation and how impressed they were with my children seeking help, even though they didn’t know these particular neighbors.I never doubted them for a minute, though next time we go fishing,we’ll monitor the gas more carefully.

Some people think if you are happy, you are blind to reality. But when we research it,happiness actually raises every single business and educational result for the brain. How did we miss this Why do we have these social misunderstandings about happiness Because we assumed you were average. When we study people, scientists are often interested in what the average is.
Many people think happiness is genetic. That’s only half the story, because the average person does not fight their genes. When we stop studying the average and begin researching positive outliers—people who are above average for a positive aspect like optimism or intelligence—a wildly different picture appears. Our daily decisions and habits have a huge impact upon both our levels of happiness and success.
Scientifically, happiness is a choice. It is a choice about where your single processor brain will devote its limited resources as you process the world. If you scan for the negative first, your brain really has no resources left over to see the things you are grateful for or the meaning embedded(嵌入) in your work. But if you scan the world for the positive, you start to acquire an amazing advantage.
I wrote the cover story for the Harvard Business Review magazine on “Happiness Leads to Profits”.Based on my article called “Positive Intelligence” and my research in The Happiness Advantage,I summarized our researched conclusion:the single greatest advantage in the modern economy is a happy and busy workforce.
A decade of research in the business world proves that happiness raises nearly every business and educational outcome:increasing sales by 37%,productivity by 31%,and accuracy on tasks by 19%,as well as a number of health and quality-of-life improvements.

A.To advertise himself.
B.To arouse the readers’ interest.
C.To support his point about happiness.

C.To show people the importance of happiness.
D.To make the point that happiness promotes business and educational outcome.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing.Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to have more time to save more lives during an earthquake.
This robot, looking like a helicopter,is called the detector bot. It’s about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air,and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake.

This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.
As well as a detector(探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas,a camera is placed in the 40 centimeters long robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot. With its 10-meter-long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins, will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.

Tu Youyou was born in Zhejiang Province,China,on 30 December,1930.She studied medicine at Peking University Health Science Centre.Later, she studied Chinese medicine for two and a half years with experts in the field from whom she gained a deep knowledge about traditional practices.
In 1969,Tu Youyou was chosen to establish a team to find a cure for malaria—a disease that killed millions of people every year.Across the world, scientists had been trying to find a cure. They tested more than 240,000 chemicals with no success. However,Tu Youyou had an idea that Chinese herbs might hold the secret. She and her team began using modern research methods to study these Chinese herbs one by one.
This was not an easy task. The reason why this was difficult was that the team had limited resources. They did not have enough staff, and the laboratory in which they worked had poor air quality. However, after hundreds of failed experiments, they eventually came across a promising chemical. It worked well in experiments on animals, but they had to know if it was safe for humans.Tu Youyou bravely volunteered to be the first human subject when they were ready to start testing and the rest of her team followed her.The test was a success. The medicine they discovered, artemisinin, has now become the world’s most effective drug for fighting malaria.
Even though Tu Youyou is not interested in fame, she has become a scientist whose work is internationally known. In 2019,she was selected by the BBC as one of the most influential figures of science in the 20th century along with Albert Einstein.Tu Youyou was known for her bravery in being a scientist during a difficult time for science in China, her ability to use old wisdom and new methods to achieve her goals and the fact that her work bridged the Eastern and Western worlds, saving millions of lives.Today Tu Youyou continues to conduct research despite her age.“From our research experience in discovering artemisinin,we learnt the wisdom behind both Chinese and Western medicine. There is great potential for future advances if these two kinds of wisdom can be fully integrated(结合),” she said.
