第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
I’ve been really into surfing (冲浪) for more than fifteen years. I started learning in England, then I began going on surfing holidays abroad with my friends — we went to Bali in Indonesia, and also South Africa. After that I started wanting bigger challenges (挑战), so five years ago I decided to try the really big waves in Hawaii. Of course they can be dangerous, but it’s worth it for the excitement you get when you’re riding them. It’s a magical feeling, like flying above the ocean, and for those few seconds you totally forget everything else in your life.
— James
I started climbing about twenty years ago, and I’ve now climbed three of the highest five mountains in Europe. It can be dangerous, and I’ve had some scary moments, but the sense of achievement when you reach the top is amazing.
— Mike
Part of me had always wanted to try skydiving (跳伞), but I was really afraid the first time. The worst bit was just before I jumped out of the plane — I wanted to be back on the ground, not 4,000 metres up in the air. As a beginner you don’t do it on your own — you’re attached to the professional instructor who helps you land safely. That first time was five years ago, and since then I’ve done more than twenty jumps on my own.
— Susan
I became interested in snowboarding the very first time I tried it. I soon realised I had a natural talent for it, and it wasn’t long before I was winning competitions and getting a bit of prize money. My dream is to be able to make my living just from boarding, so I now take three months off work every winter to perfect my skills.
— Teresa

What would your life be like if you were Albert Einstein What clothes would be in your wardrobe (衣橱) if you were Madonna
Well, now you can discover the answer to all these questions and many more at the Fame Hotel in California. Ten miles outside Los Angeles, the Fame Hotel promises to answer the question “What if ”. When you check into the hotel, you choose a room. Each room has a name. There’s Clint Eastwood on the second floor and Elvis Presley on the third floor. In total, the Fame Hotel has 32 rooms, most of which are named after stars of Hollywood or music. But there are also famous writers (Mark Twain and Agatha Christie) and even some scientists and sports stars, such as Mike Tyson.
When you enter the room, you enter the life of that person. There are pictures everywhere. The owner of the hotel has tried to fill the room with objects, clothes, even food that he thinks the stars would have liked. Marilyn Monroe’s wardrobe is full of beautiful white dresses, and Albert Einstein doesn’t have any socks in his wardrobe because the real Einstein never wore them! If you choose Mike Tyson’s room, you’ll be able to practice boxing in one corner of the room. And there’s even a skipping rope (跳绳) too!
I spoke to one guest staying in the Elvis Presley room. “I love this hotel,” he said to me. “I wanted to know ‘What would Elvis Presley eat for breakfast ’ and now I know”. That guest eats pancakes and strawberry ice cream every morning, just as Elvis liked to do. On the next table, the Einstein room’s guest is eating cabbage soup!
The company plans to open another Fame Hotel in New York next year and there are plans to expand into Europe too. I look forward to staying in the Winston Churchill suite (套房) in London!

Before moving to Stockholm, I did my research on Sweden and was confident about my move. However, I quickly realized on my first day that so much of what I learned was so very wrong. There are many things that a Google search cannot show about Sweden.
The first is fika. A fika is taking a break from whatever you are doing to enjoy a coffee with friends. Swedes value community highly so it makes sense that they would like to set aside time each day to reconnect with others. Fika is a great time to meet new people as well as catch up with friends!
I grew up in the American South where everyone is very friendly. I found that little things like not being asked my life story at the coffee shop by the waiter upset (使沮丧) me. However, Swedish people are not rude. Instead, they practice being lagom, which means “just enough.”
The winters can be very dark and cold, so the Swedish people do not take any sunny day for granted. Since the weather has been fine, I have found myself walking a lot around Stockholm. Often it is easiest to get from place to place by walking, which allows you to see so much of the city and enjoy the fresh air. Though it has been very tiring to get used to, it also has made me feel better about all of the kardemummabullar that I have been eating!
I think it is important for students who want to study abroad to know that it is hard to move countries no matter how “similar” you may think they may be. You have to jump in with both feet and be patient with yourself as well as others. As long as you keep an open mind and are willing to learn, you will have a great experience!
28. What do we know about fika
A. It is a waste of time.
B. It is a Swedish social tradition.
C. It is all about drinking coffee.
D. It is a way to balance life and work.
29. What does the author think of Swedish people
A. They are friendly.
B. They seem a bit cold.
C. They appear really rude.
D. They are interested in others’ life.
30. Why does the author like walking
A. It is fun and not very tiring.
B. It is good exercise on cold days.
C. It allows her to enjoy sunny days.
D. It gives her the chance to eat the local food.
31. What’s the author’s advice for students going abroad
A. Be careful.
B. Be confident.
C. Be open-minded.
D. Be hard-working.
D
As a young boy, I knew what people said was not always what they meant or were feeling. And I knew it was possible to get others to do what I wanted if I read their real feelings and responded (回应) suitably to their needs. At the age of eleven, I sold sponge rubber (泡沫橡胶) door-to-door after school and quickly worked out how to tell if someone was likely to buy from me. When I knocked on a door, if someone told me to go away but their hands were open and they showed their palms (the inside surfaces of their hands), I knew it was safe to continue with my presentation (展示) because they weren’t angry or threatening although they may have a dismissive (不屑的) attitude. If someone told me to go away in a soft voice but used a pointed finger or closed hand, I knew it was time to leave.
As a teenager, I became a pots and pans (炊具) salesperson, and my ability to read people earned me enough money to buy my first house. Selling gave me the chance to meet people and study them close and to know whether they would buy or not, simply by watching their body language.
I joined the life insurance business at the age of twenty. And I went on to break several sales records for my company, becoming the youngest person to sell over a million dollars’ worth of business in my first year. This achievement allowed me to become a member of the well-known Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT, which recognizes the world’s top achievers in life insurance). I was lucky that the skills I’d learned as a boy in watching body language while selling pots and pans could be used in this new area, and were directly related to the success I could have in any business closely connected with people.
32. Which of the following meant the author must go away
A. A customer’s soft voice.
B. A customer’s pointed finger.
C. A customer’s open palms.
D. A customer’s dismissive expression.
33. What is the “new area” mentioned in the last paragraph
A. The study of selling products.
B. The life insurance business.
C. The pots and pans industry.
D. The work for the MDRT.
34. What was the key to the author’s success
A. Listening to customers’ words.
B. Understanding customers’ habits.
C. Trying to satisfy customers’ needs.
D. Reading customers’ body language.
35. How does the text mainly develop
A. By following the order of time.
B. By giving clear explanations.
C. By giving well-known examples.
D. By following the order of importance.

Four ways to make someone else smile
Although we are often worried about our own problems, or the way people think of us, making someone else smile through a simple act of kindness can completely turn your mood around, too. Here is a list of ideas to help you.
Send a handwritten letter
36 . Putting pen to paper and writing a few words to a friend can be an easy way to make a difference. Even a postcard with a couple of sentences could really make someone’s day — all for the price of a stamp!
Volunteer (无偿做)
Whether you volunteer at your local youth group or take dogs from shelters (收容所) for a walk, the simple fact that you are giving up your time to help someone else is amazing. Make sure you can find one that is right for you. 37 — it could be once a week or a couple of times a year.
38
Whether you’re creative or not, taking time to make something for someone else shows how much you appreciate them. Even if you think you’re not creative, the recipient (接受者) will feel lucky to get such a special gift that you put your time into. 39 !
Tell someone “I love you”
Before you do that, it can be anyone — your mum or dad, grandparents, or friend. And you don’t even have to say “I love you”. 40 , or remind (提醒) your mum that you love her. Sometimes, in our busy lives, we forget to take a moment to tell people what they mean to us.

B. Smile at everyone you see every single day
C. It doesn’t necessarily have to take up all your time

At the East Los Angeles Library, even the youngest readers have to pay their fines (罚款) — but not the way you think. Card holders 21 and under can read away their late fees (费用) at a rate of $5 per hour, according to CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) reporter Jamie Yuccas. It’s a new period of time for Los Angeles County, a program called “The Great Read Away.”
“We’re not really focusing (集中) on what they’re reading so long as they’re reading here,” LA County Library Director Skye Patrick said. He said the idea came about after the library noticed a disconcerting fact: Many kids who had debts on overdue (逾期的) books or movies would stop coming to the library altogether.
“Ten dollars, for some people is a huge amount,” Patrick said.
“And those are the kids that you want in the library ” Yuccas asked.
“That’s exactly right, so the purpose of this program is really to invite them back into the library, to make libraries open to them and their families,” Patrick said.
In a reading room, Yuccas found 8-year-old Jaylene Robles working off her late fee while also catching up on the popular “Judy Moody” series.
“When you didn’t have to pay money for your fines, and you could read away your fines, what did you think ” he asked her.
“I was surprised ... I thought everyone in the library or someone that has a fine, would have to pay,” Robles said.
Children’s librarian Xuemin Zhong said she sees kids reading away fees daily.
“I’ve seen as low as a couple of cents to as high as a couple hundred dollars,” Zhong said. “And I’ve seen kids read that away because they have a duty to do so.”
Since the program started last year, LA County said its more than 80 libraries have recorded more than 50,000 reading periods and opened more than 13,000 blocked accounts (被封帐号).

Dougan’s mum, Patricia, has lived at Dundonald House for two years and has had dementia (痴呆) for nine years. She has lost most of her speech. But the French course was something she and her husband could do together and the whole family has noticed a change in her.
“I think Dad decided he’d take Mum just for her benefit (好处),” says Mari Dougan. “But he loved it just as much as she did. After they did the French course, they did Italian. Mum knows she’s there and she sometimes answers with a word or two — that’s amazing. She has been much more active since she started the classes.”
Courses in French, Italian, German and Spanish last for ten weeks for an hour a week. The classes are the idea of Robbie Norval, who started Lingo Flamingo in 2015 to give lessons to older adults. Lingo Flamingo has 35 teachers who work in care homes and community centres in Scotland. So far, it has worked with more than 800 people.
Thomas Bak is a psychologist from the University of Edinburgh. His research into dementia over 20 years has found that people who are bilingual (双语的) get dementia up to four years later than those who are monolingual (只说一种语言的).
Even for people who aren’t bilingual, learning a language in later life has benefits, Bak says. He has found improvements (改善) in attention and memory among older adults. He believes it is never too late to learn a language. “In fact, it becomes more important with age,” he says. He adds that what is really good about language learning is the variety of tasks you have to do. “You have to learn to tell the difference between different sounds. You have to learn new ideas that might be very different from your mother tongue. You have to learn grammar and how to use words in a conversation,” he says. Bak says doing a sudoku puzzle is not as useful — it is like going to the gym and spending all your time on a single machine.
“We’ve also found learning a language really increases well-being and self-confidence,” Norval says. “If an adult with dementia can learn a couple of words, they think to themselves, ‘I can learn new things.’ They don’t fear dementia as much. They realise they’re not forgetting everything, which is a really important message.”
5. What has changed about Dougan’s mum after she started learning new languages
A. She always talks to herself.
B. She is willing to go outside.
C. She can remember everything.
D. She can communicate with others.
6. What’s the attitude of Dougan’s dad to her mum learning a new language
A. Amazed.
B. Worried.
C. Uncaring.
D. Supportive.
7. What can we learn about Lingo Flamingo’s lessons
A. They are only held in care homes.
B. They are mainly open to the elderly.
C. They include five different languages.
D. They are designed by the University of Edinburgh.
8. What does Thomas Bak think of language learning
A. It is good for the brain.
B. It is not easy for older adults.
C. It is like doing work with a machine.
D. It is as hard as doing a sudoku puzzle.

41. B。由上文中的If you ask your parents to babysit regularly then you should pay them可知,此处表示父母没有义务免费“帮(help)”你照看孩子。
42. C。43. A。44. C。由上文中的you should pay them以及本句中的but和you must find other ways可知,当然,大多数帮忙给子女照看孩子的父母都“不会要(refuse)”工资。但是,不要因为这样就 “不(stop)”表达你对他们的“感激之情(appreciation)”,你应该换用其他的方式。
45. D。由语境可知,有些父母必须精打细算,才能收支平衡,watch(当心,留意)符合语境。
49. A。由本句中的to pay for petrol可知,我们会经常往母亲包里塞“钱(money)”。
50. B。结合第一段中作者的观点以及下文中的We help her in other ways, mainly gardening可知,作者不希望母亲在帮忙照看孩子的时候,还给他们花钱。故此处表示“我”不断“告诉(telling)”母亲不要给孩子们买东西。
51. C。由上文中的We help her in other ways, mainly gardening以及本句中的she gets older可知,母亲年龄越来越大,对她来说,园艺工作也变得“比较吃力(harder)”。
52. D。由本句中的but there are other ways to say thank you可知,此处表示如果你不需要帮助父母做园艺工作的话,choice符合语境。
53. A。54. D。由上文中的there are other ways to say thank you可知,你可以给父母做些饭菜冷藏起来,“这样(so)”当他们没有精力“做饭(cook)”时,就可以吃到可口的饭菜。
55. B。由上文可知,许多父母无偿地帮自己的子女照顾孩子。结合下文中的either pay for a cleaner to visit their home monthly or help them ... cleaning the bathroom, etc.可知,反过来,我们也可以替父母做一些清洁工作,deal 表示“交易”,符合语境。
56. A。由下文中的changing bed linen, cleaning the bathroom, etc.可知,此处表示一些比较难做的 “家务(jobs)”。
57. C。上文和本段罗列了我们可以为父母做的几件事,相比之下,本段讲述的事最“重要(importantly)”。
58. D。59. B。60. C。结合上文以及本段中的Ask them how their day’s been, check in with them regularly可知,我们应该聆听父母的心声、“关心(care for)”父母,让父母“知道(know)”他们是家里的重要成员,而不“只(just)”是临时照顾孩子的保姆。
