A few years ago, Adina Lichtman was handing out sandwiches on the streets of New York City to help people experiencing homelessness. One man, grateful for the sandwich, approached her and offered a surprising idea.
“It’s great that you’re giving out sandwiches,” he said, “but one thing we really need is socks, especially as winter approaches.”
“Here I was, sandwiches in hand, thinking I knew the best way to help people,” Lichtman said. “It was a powerful lesson, and I wanted to put it into action.”
She began that night, with a simple step: going door-to-door on the floor of her dormitory (宿舍) at New York University, asking her classmates if they could each just donate (捐赠) just one pair of their own socks to someone experiencing homelessness. She got 40 pairs of socks in a single night, from a single floor. The next morning she opened her door to find a lot of socks that other people had donated.
That morning officially kicked off Knock Knock, Give a Sock (KKGS), a new nonprofit (非营利的) organization that has now provided over 350,000 pairs of socks to the homeless across America. To date, over 50 colleges and high schools across the US have joined KKGS over the years.
“While many people donate clothing, 9 out of every 10 clothing donors have never donated socks. On top of that, people who are trying to donate socks often find it difficult to donate used socks,” she says. “KKGS is one of the only organizations that collects used socks. We have volunteers knocking on doors of their classmates in school, of their workmates at work, and even of their neighbors.”
But, whether you’re 26 or 62, you don’t need to wait to organize your own sock drive, collect socks, or even wash and clean some of your own to donate to your local shelter (收容所), or someone in need who you meet on the street.

Last year, I spent two-and-a-half months in Paris, living alone and working on a writing project. Although there is a seemingly great divide between my culture and theirs, I realized I could learn an awful lot.
The first thing I noticed in Paris is that no one here walks around with a “to-go” cup of coffee. And I mean no one — I haven’t seen a single person carrying one in the days I’ve been here. Back home in New York, it’s normal for every other person on the street (including me) to be carrying a cup from Starbucks or their local coffee shop, but not here. It’s been a valuable lesson for me, and something I can take back from Paris. Now I carry my own cup to the coffee shop instead of getting yet another cup that will go straight into the garbage can (垃圾箱) ten minutes after it’s placed in my hands.
Also, in the grocery stores (杂货店), shoppers have to bag their own groceries. The simple act of doing that yourself is another chance to think about things: what kind of bag you’re using (I recently saw one customer at my local grocery store put his fruit, cans of soup, and toilet paper into his briefcase!), what you’re putting in the bag, and what you will really need to eat and use at home (Did I really need that roll of paper towels or will my dish towels back at the apartment do just fine ). My French friend uses the bags from the grocery store as her kitchen garbage bags. Now, so do I.
Anyway, in Paris, people do most of their shopping in small markets: they buy their fruit at one, their cheese at another, and then stop at their local bakery (面包店) to buy that day’s fresh-baked bread, and walk out holding the bread only one part of which is covered by a piece of paper big enough for their hand. I certainly haven’t noticed any supermarket like a Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club.

Carleen Hutchins finished building her first stringed instrument (弦乐器) in 1949, when she was 38. She is remembered as an excellent luthier. A luthier is a person who makes stringed instruments, such as violins and guitars.
Hutchins was a primary school science teacher. She took up the viola (中提琴) at 36. But she wasn’t satisfied with the viola she bought. Since she was a skilled woodworker, she decided to build one herself.
For more than 50 years, she carved (雕刻) stringed instruments. Hutchins worked from her home — often in her kitchen. She used a scientific method to carve them. Over the years, she made around 500 instruments. Her method is still used. It helps luthiers carve high-quality stringed instruments.
Hutchins also created a family of eight violins known as the violin octet. They change in size and tone (音调). “It’s how the instrument is carved that makes it a violin,” Joe McNalley says. He is the founder of the Hutchins Consort, a group that plays the octet.
The four instruments in the string family are violin, viola, cello, and bass. They cannot play the lowest or highest notes of the piano. They play the notes in between. Hutchins created a family of eight violins that play all the notes a piano plays.

Last Friday morning in the train station, I was witnessed something that moved me deeply. Right as I walk out into the main hall on way to my next connection, I saw a woman put something next to a sleeping homeless man. I felt curiously and I wondered if she had put some cashes there. Dog owners who lived near Chicago’s Soldier Field knew to watch out for the coyote (草原狼).
The wild, doglike animal lived somewhere among the tall buildings near the football stadium. As the sun went down each evening, the coyote would lie in the grass next to a parking lot, waiting. Within his view, people walked their dogs along a bike trail (小路). Each night, the coyote would charge at the first dog to come along.
Dr. Stanley Gehrt, a scientist at The Ohio State University, led the team that solved the problem. Besides studying coyotes, he and his co-workers teach people ways to avoid problems with coyotes. In short, he says, “Don’t feed them, and manage your pets.”
The secret to the coyote’s success is intelligence. To survive in the wild, a coyote must hunt small animals, and avoid becoming a meal for wolves or bears. “This way of living creates a super-smart animal,” Dr. Gehrt says. One of the smartest changes coyotes made was to hide during the day and come out mainly at night in the city.
Coyotes have also learned to avoid their biggest killer: cars. One coyote has been seen sitting patiently at a busy crossroads. She may not know how traffic lights work, but she has learned that the cars will soon stop long enough for her to cross the street.
The male that charged at passing dogs near Soldier Field is an example. Dr. Gehrt and his co-workers had already been watching the coyote for months, and the animal had always avoided dogs. But now he and his mate had a home with young coyotes on top of the parking lot nearby. He was charging at the dogs to protect his family.
The researchers solved the problem. When the coyote pair appeared in the evening, they ran toward them, shouting and shaking a noisemaker — a coffee can with coins rattling (发出咔嗒咔嗒的声音) inside. “Usually, that’s all you have to do,” Dr. Gehrt says. “You do it once, and you’ll never see that coyote again.” Finally, the coyote pair moved out of the parking lot.
