Five people are talking about working from home.
Chris: I'm a language graduate and I've been translating from Italian to English for most of my career. We've been in Milan for nearly 20 years and I've been working from home for 12 years, since my first child was born. I've found that my work-life balance has been easier to manage since I started working from home — and it needs to be easy to manage when you've got children!
Miranda: I'm a writer and I've been working from home for the last 18 months. I must say it's been pretty difficult. For one thing I've been paying a lot more for heating. And I've missed the office gossip (闲聊). To be honest, it's quite lonely. I almost wish I could go back to my old job.
Jordan: Working from home has really changed my life. I love it. I love being my own boss. I've been working from home as a website designer since I left my last job in 2004. I have a bit more time these days. I've bought myself a new guitar and I've been taking guitar lessons for the last six months.
Ahmed: It's not for everyone, but I like working from home. I do contract work in design. The best thing is that I don't have to commute (通勤) to work on crowded trains. I've had lots more time and I've been learning a new language since I started working from home in January. I've always wanted to learn Spanish.
Rageh: I'm German but I've been living abroad for five years. I've been working in marketing for a pharmaceutical (制药的) company near London and I've been working from home part of the time since January. I work from home three days a week and commute to the office twice a week. I was very lucky to get this opportunity. When I work from home I get up late and work late in the evenings. I've never been a morning person.

Winters are cold in northern British Columbia, a province of Canada. That's one reason why two girls became concerned about a number of homeless cats in their town.
“My dad first saw this big cat problem ... and he knew the man who had all the cats,” says Vivienne Thompson. Vivienne and her friend Catrina Vanderwolf learned that the man wasn't happy about all the cats living around his home. They offered to help.
Each day after school all winter long, the girls walked two miles to feed the cats. “We could see all their footprints in the snow and at first couldn't understand why they wouldn't let us get close to them,” explain the girls.
They contacted Valerie Ingram at the Lakes Animal Friendship Society, who told them that the cats are “feral.” They belong to no one. Feral cats have little or no contact with humans in their entire lives. The large colony of cats likely started with two stray (流浪的) cats who had a litter of kittens. Those cats had kittens, and before long, there were dozens of homeless cats.
To get the cat colony under control, the cats would need operations so that they could no longer have kittens. Vivienne and Catrina shared what they learned with their teachers and other students — and a project began! Grassy Plains Schoolstarted raising money to pay for the cats' operations. Before long, local organizations and large companies agreed to help.
Volunteers spent months humanely trapping (诱捕) the cats. Finally, all the cats had been operated on and returned to the colony.
“We were so happy to be a part of helping, to get to know the cats, to not see suffering anymore, only happy cats — and a happy man who feeds them on his step now,” say Vivienne and Catrina.

A. Be a responsible pet lover
B. Advice to new cat owners

Valentine's Day, especially in America, is a holiday that bears much sentimental (感情的) value. To celebrate, couples exchange cards and flowers to express their love. At my high school, students can buy flowers to deliver to one another during class. As for most of my friends, the occasion is simply an excuse to enjoy chocolate.
While these are all common ideas of Valentine's Day, it is hard to believe that the holiday is based on Bishop Valentine, who objected to the rules of the Roman Emperor Claudius. According to the Christian faith (信仰), Valentine's story is one of courage and romance.
During the third century, the Roman Empire was weakened by attacks from surrounding tribes (部落). Emperor Claudius the Second, who ruled at the time, believed that marriage had made his soldiers weak. To settle his concerns, he passed a law that forbade marriage, to ensure the quality of his soldiers. This ban on marriage was a great shock, especially to Bishop Valentine, who noted the injustice of the law. Disregarding Claudius' wishes, Valentine helped lovers unite in a marriage. However, it was only a matter of time before the bishop's practices were discovered and he was caught by the emperor. Immediately, Valentine was imprisoned.
While waiting for his sentence, the bishop's jailor, Asterius, approached him; he begged Valentine to heal (治愈) his blind daughter. Successfully, Valentine restored the girl's vision and over time, they became close and fell in love. Months later, the emperor asked Valentine to agree to his demand that Valentine end his practices. Since Claudius's request went against his religion, the bishop refused. Moments before his execution (处死), Valentine asked for a pen and paper from Emperor Claudius. In a romantic gesture, the bishop signed a final farewell message to Asterius's daughter, his lover. In the letter, he wrote, “from your Valentine” — a phrase that has lived on ever after.
While Valentine's Day has become a widely commercialized (商业化的) occasion, there is much to learn from the holiday's history. In the end, the story of Bishop Valentine shows what the holiday should represent — a time to appreciate loved ones.
28. Why did Claudius ban marriage
A. To exercise his power.
B. To fight against Valentine.
C. To produce quality soldiers.
D. To govern the unruly citizens.
29. What does the underlined word “restored” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Showed.
B. Gave back.
C. Shared.
D. Knew about.
30. What do we know about Valentine
A. He had firm beliefs.
B. He founded Valentine's Day.
C. He was put to death by Asterius.
D. He fell in love with Claudius's daughter.
31. What is the focus of this text
A. The greatest bishop in human history.
B. Why people celebrate Valentine's Day.
C. How Valentine helped young lovers unite.
D. The meaning and history of Valentine's Day.
[D]
Compared to saving the rainforests, or helping pandas to produce young, linguistic ecology (语言生态) might not seem very exciting. One language is becoming extinct every fortnight — so what “Why should we care ” is a common reaction. Here are a few reasons why you should.
Identity: Many speakers of minority languages are fiercely proud of their language. Language forms an important part of anyone's identity. Nerys Jenkins in Belfast says, “Telling me not to speak Welsh would be like telling me not to breathe: I just couldn't do it.” To let someone's language die out is to let part of their identity die too.
Culture: Language is connected with culture — if a nation loses a language, it may also lose its links with a tradition of jokes, music and literature. Elizabeth MacDonald from Arisaig says Scottish Gaelic is “... our language, the most important part of an ancient culture which has somehow survived despite (尽管) many persecutions (迫害) over the centuries. It is a culture rich in story, song and poetry, beloved of those familiar with it.”
Knowledge: Languages harbor all kinds of human knowledge — including useful biological or medical information that we might not find out about otherwise. In the Micmac language, for example, trees are named after the sound they make in the wind. The names change as the sounds change, so, if an elderly Micmac speaker remembers that a certain kind of tree used to have one name, but is now called something else, this can show the effects of acid rain on that species. Lose Micmac and you will lose that understanding.
Of the 6,000 or so languages in the world, more than half are expected to die within the next century, and many more are disappearing. It's estimated (估计) that two languages die out every month. It's easy to think of dying and extinct languages as just facts and figures, but behind every one, there are real people. The online Ethnologue database, for example, says of one Syrian language: “The last speaker died in 1998. His daughter knows Mlahs well, but is nearly deaf and has no one to speak it to.”
32. What do Nerys Jenkins's words suggest
A. He takes pride in his language.
B. He doesn't know other languages.
C. He can't find his identity in Wales.
D. He'll die if not allowed to speak Welsh.
33. What do we know about language from Paragraph 3
A. It builds a nation's spirit.
B. It forms a nation's tradition.
C. It keeps people in touch with the classics.
D. It connects people from different nations.
34. What do the tree name changes imply
A. Languages develop very fast.
B. The air pollution is getting worse.
C. The number of Micmac speakers is dropping.
D. People of different ages speak different languages.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Mlahs is no longer in existence.
B. The extinction of languages matters little.
C. Languages die with the disappearance of facts.
D. Languages are disappearing at a surprising speed.

Johannes Gutenberg
—the pioneer of the printing press
Johannes Gutenberg was chosen to be the most important figure of the past millennium by the media (媒体). You may not be familiar with him. 36 Gutenberg is praised for having invented the printing press and therefore preparing the way for printing books.
He was born into a wealthy family in the city of Mainz, Germany. His early training was in goldsmithing. In 1428, he moved to Strasbourg and lived there for almost 20 years. 37
Gutenberg used his skills in metalwork for the mass production of books. 38 That means that each copy of the Catholic bible and all of its 73 books were painstakingly handwritten by penmen. Gutenberg fashioned a font (字体) of over 300 characters, far larger than the fonts of today. To make this possible, he invented the variable-width mold (模型) and perfected the mixture of materials used by type factories up to the present century.
39 Between 1450 and 1455, while preparing to produce a large Latin Bible, Gutenberg is thought to have printed a number of smaller books, a calendar, and a papal Letter of Indulgence. The Bible of 42 Lines, the oldest surviving printed book in the Western world, was completed by August 15, 1456.
The discovery of the modern printing press changed the way information was delivered. 40 Even today in the computer age, we rely heavily on the printed word or text for instruction, information, and for the pleasure of reading literature.
A. Gutenberg made the world a much richer place.
B. But he has certainly influenced your life in some ways.
C. Gutenberg's idea was one of the greatest of all mankind.
D. By 1450, Gutenberg was back in Mainz at work on a printing press.
E. In fact, this invention was responsible for educating the masses worldwide.
F. Before the spread of Gutenberg's idea, literature was primarily handwritten.
G. It was in Strasbourg that he probably made his first experiments with moveable type.

Dear Peter,
I'm writing to tell you more about one of our Chinese traditional festivals, the Dragon Boat Festival.
It is celebrated on the 5th day of May in the Chinese lunar calendar. There are many stories about the origin of the festival, but the most popular one is about Qu Yuan, a great poet and loyal minister in ancient China. People celebrate the festival in memory of him. On that day, people eat zongzi and hold dragon boat races, as well as hanging a kind of plant called Ay Tsao on their doors for protection.
If you want to know more about the festival, don't hesitate to ask me.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
