David Unaipon was an inventor and writer. He was the first Aboriginal (土著的) Australian to write published books. He also worked hard to make life better for Aboriginal people.
David Unaipon was born in South Australia, in 1872. As a young man, he loved to read and was interested in science and music. He thought a lot about new ways to fix engineering problems. Between the years 1909 and 1944, Unaipon made nine important inventions. He also made drawings for a helicopter design. He got the idea from the Australian boomerang (回飞镖) and the way it moved through the air. This happened in 1914, before we had helicopters.
Unaipon lived most of his life in Adelaide and worked for the Aborigines’ Friends’ Association. He worked and travelled around southeastern Australia for fifty years. Sometimes, while travelling from town to town, he was told he couldn’t stay in a hotel because he was black, so he understood the problems of racism (种族主义).
In 1925, Unaipon became the first Aboriginal writer to be published. His first published writing was an article in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph newspaper. The article had the title: “Aboriginals: Their Traditions and Customs”. He wrote many other articles for newspapers and magazines, getting publicity about the rights of Aboriginal people. He also wrote about the need for white and black people to work together and the need for equal rights for both black and white Australians. He was well educated in both cultures, and in 1929 he helped with a government survey of Aboriginal health and interests.
David Unaipon died in 1967 at the age of 95, in the same year that Aboriginal people were first counted as part of Australia’s population. In 1995, David Unaipon’s picture was put on the Australian fifty-dollar note, with a drawing of one of his inventions.

Each year, the women of Olney, England, and Liberal, Kansas, have an unusual “pancake racing”. This tradition is said to have started on Shrove Tuesday, 1445, in Olney. Shrove Tuesday is the day before the Christian season of Lent begins.
It is said that in 1445, an Olney woman was making pancakes. She suddenly heard the church (教堂) bells ring, signaling the beginning of the Shrove Tuesday service. Realizing that she was going to be late for church, she raced out the door still wearing her apron (围裙) and headscarf and holding her frying pan (锅) with a pancake in it. Olney women continue this tradition more than 500 years later.
In 1950, a person of Liberal wanted his town to join in Olney Pancake Race. He made some phone calls to Olney to set up a friendly competition, and the people of Olney accepted the challenge (挑战).
The rules are simple. Racers must wear the traditional headscarf and apron. They have to flip (抛) the pancake in the air so that it flips and lands back in the pan on the other side. After the race, there are Shrove Tuesday church services. Then Liberal and Olney connect through a video call to compare race times and announce a winner.
In both towns, the races have grown into larger festivals. Olney’s festival is an all-day event starting with a big pancake breakfast. Liberal’s festival lasts four days and includes a parade, a great show, and eating competitions.
Although the women’s race is still the main event, both towns now hold races for boys and girls of all ages. Emma Evans, 14, was the winner of her age group’s race in Liberal last year. She wore an apron that her grandma made for her and used a pan passed down to her from her older brother. Her family cheered her on from the sidelines.
“It’s a family tradition,” Emma says. “And there are only two places in the world that compete against each other in a race like this, so it feels special.”
28. What do we know about Olney Pancake Race
A. It was founded by a cook.
B. It was started during Lent.
C. It is a centuries-old tradition.
D. It has been held every year since 1445.

A. Wear their formal clothes.
B. Throw and catch the pancake.
C. Hand the pancake to another.
D. Eat the pancake while running.
30. Different from Olney’s festival, Liberal’s festival _____.
A. lasts only one day
B. has more varied activities
C. holds different races for boys
D. starts with a delicious breakfast
31. How does Emma look at pancake racing

No one can deny (否认) that LeBron James gets paid a lot of money — but no one can deny that he hasn’t earned it either. He’s broken the records of greats like Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. He’s a talent.
Professional athletes (运动员) like LeBron give their lives to their sport — to training, traveling, and pushing themselves to the limit. And while their lives may seem glamorous, think about this: Athletes face injuries that can be not only career-ending but also life-changing. In fact, many retired (退休的) athletes have long-term health problems because of how hard they push on their bodies. Retired New York Jets player Wesley Walker said that he suffered so much pain as a result of playing football that today he can hardly open a water bottle.
The toll (代价) a professional athlete’s career takes on his or her body means more than a lifetime of pain (and medical bills); it also means a short career. Athletes need pay that will carry them past the 5 to 15 years they are able to play.
Without the showstopping performances of stars like Serena Williams and Stephen Curry, many jobs wouldn’t exist. Sports reporters, stadium workers, cheerleaders, and coaches are among those who can thank the professional sports industry for their employment.
It may seem unfair that athletes get paid to play a game, but remember who they are really playing for: us. We’re the ones who fill stadiums in rain and snow to watch their games, who crowd around the television to cheer them on, and who feel immeasurable joy when our team wins.
The work of professional athletes certainly pays off for us. Shouldn’t it pay off for them too
32. What does the underlined word “glamorous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Difficult.
B. Tiresome.
C. Attractive.
D. Organized.
33. Which of the following may the author agree with
A. Professional athletes have no idea about their limits.
B. Injuries are a problem for professional athletes.
C. Retired professional athletes are badly treated.
D. Professional athletes’ careers are short.
34. What is the author’s attitude to athletes’ high salaries
A. Doubtful.
B. Surprised.
C. Supportive.
D. Unconcerned.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The most impressive athletes
B. You can’t put a price on talent
C. You shouldn’t push athletes hard
D. Salaries in the professional sports industry

Lizzy Greene’s official website says it all: “Actress, Artist & Animal Lover.” At 13, Lizzy has performed in children’s theater, and she is a trained gymnast. She is most known for her role as Dawn Harper on Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn. Now Lizzy is taking on another role — as a voice for animals.

Many K-12 schools, universities and hospitals nationwide have started Meatless Monday programs.
“It’s so easy to love animals,” Lizzy says. 40 For some kid-and-animal-friendly meatless recipes (食谱), visit humonesociety.org/kindnews.

In August last year, my wife and I were visiting her sister’s family in Princeton Junction, New Jersey. They have a lovely home in West Windsor Township. Being a regular (经常的) walker, I enjoyed walking a short route starting from their house. One evening I decided to be adventurous (冒险的) and left my regular route — I was looking forward to a longer walk, confident that I would be able to find my way back.
My walk took me into beautiful countryside. After about 15 minutes I noticed that I was not heading back in the direction I had come — in fact I seemed to be moving further away. No problem, I thought, as I fished around in my pocket for my mobile phone to call home and get help, but it wasn’t there. I had left it at home.
However, I remained calm. Although there weren’t any people about, there was some traffic and I was sure that someone would finally stop and point me in the right direction. As each car approached, I stopped and waved, but time after time each one passed me by. After 40 minutes, I was beginning to feel desperate. There was no one in sight and my family was completely in the dark as to my whereabouts.
Suddenly, a car approached and stopped. A mother and daughter wanted to know how they could help. I told them I was lost and gave them my home address. The mother pointed to a turning and assured me I was pretty close to home. Thanking her, I started off happily.
I had been walking for just five minutes when I heard a car drive up behind me and stop. It was the mother and daughter again. They realised that they had not given me the correct directions.
Without wasting any time, they offered to drop me home, for which I was very grateful. During our brief conversation I got the sense that the teenage daughter was going to a school party and would now arrive late. We didn’t exchange names but I will never forget their kindness.

B ★★★★☆
From eating turkey (火鸡) to spending time with family to watching football, Thanksgiving is filled with traditions. But one of the most popular — pulling the wishbone (如愿骨) — dates back centuries.
The upside-down V-shaped bone is in fact called the furcula. It is an elastic (有弹性的) bone located between a turkey’s neck and its breast. All birds have a wishbone. It helps support a bird as it flies. At Thanksgiving, the tradition is for two people to hold one end of the wishbone, make a wish, and then tug (拉). The winner is the person who ends up with the bigger piece and can make a wish.
How did this tradition get started The practice of making a wish on a bird’s furcula dates back to the ancient Etruscans. After killing a chicken, an Etruscan would leave the wishbone in the sun to dry. Passersby would pick it up, touch it for good luck, and make a wish. That is how the furcula got the name “wishbone”.
The Etruscans passed the tradition along to the Romans. Soon, the practice of making a wish on a chicken’s furcula became popular in ancient Rome. And it was so widespread that there weren’t enough chickens or wishbones to go around. So the Romans began breaking the wishbone in two. Now, twice as many people could make wishes.
Then the English brought the practice to the New World. There, they found a lot of wild turkeys. So they started using a turkey furcula for their wishes. Today a wishbone tug of war is a part of Thanksgiving.
When it comes time to pull apart the wishbone, different people have different methods to end up with the biggest piece. But there are a few tips that may help you get the upper hand.
First, make sure your hands are dry. Next, make sure you hold the wishbone the right way. Take it between your thumb (拇指) and forefinger and place your thumb as close to the center of the bone as possible. The more force you can use at your side of the wishbone, the better chance you have of winning the war.
5. What can we learn about the furcula
A. It is immovable.
B. It is difficult to get.
C. It is necessary for a bird’s flight.
D. It is stronger than the wishbone.
6. Why did the Romans break the wishbone in two
A. To create a good-looking bone.
B. To satisfy the increasing needs of people.
C. To let it become dry as soon as possible.
D. To prevent people from killing more chickens.
7. How can people win a wishbone tug of war
A. By washing their hands first.
B. By pulling the wishbone hard.
C. By breaking the center of the wishbone.
D. By holding the wishbone with all their fingers.
8. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To introduce a Thanksgiving tradition.
B. To tell the early history of Thanksgiving.
C. To offer people suggestions on wishbone pull.
D. To teach people how to make their wish come true.

The Dragon Boat Festival, one of the Chinese traditional festivals, dates back over 2,000 years. It’s celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival is best-known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern areas where there’re many rivers and lakes. Besides, people always cook and eat zongzi on that day. The festival is celebrated in honour of the death of a great Chinese poet, Qu Yuan, who loved his country and killed himself by jumping into the river when his country was taken control of by enemies. In my opinion, it’s necessary to attach importance to our traditional festivals, for they’re parts of our culture.
