In summer 2007, I joined the British Red Cross at 15. After several days of training, I was attending my first event as a fully qualified Red Cross volunteer. Our team was providing medical cover for a large martial arts (武术) grading event.
Although I'd passed my first aid course with flying colours, I was nervous before the event began. There's quite a difference between the classroom and the real thing! Two experienced adult volunteers would be working with me for the day.
Rosie was taking part in the under-16s event. This was supposed to be non-contact, and she was wearing full protective clothing just in case. All these precautions (预防措施) didn't help however, when her competitor misjudged a move and delivered a violent blow to her head.
“Guys, we need some help over here!” Over we went, all three of us carrying various bits of kit (工具箱). Rosie was lying on the ground. As we approached we could see she was conscious. Brian, my colleague took the lead.
“Hey there, stay nice and still for me. Chris here is just going to hold your head. Don't worry; it's just a precaution.”
I helped, painfully aware that hundreds of sets of eyes were following our every move. However I soon forgot all about this as I focused on the task at hand.
Rosie was complaining of pain in her neck. These are all classic signs of a possible spinal injury. Quickly, Brian found there were no other injuries and an ambulance (救护车) was called. I was still holding her head and doing my best to comfort her.
The doctors arrived and we put Rosie carefully into the ambulance for a trip to hospital. Then we went back to the first aid post quickly.
Ten years on I've met many more people like Rosie — in need of help. I've moved on from being a trainee to a trainer, from an inexperienced first aider to being part of an emergency ambulance (急救车) team.
When a call comes in, that slight feeling of nervousness is still there. However, so is the feeling of making a difference, being there during a painful moment in someone's life.

2013 was a record-breaking year for rhinoceroses — but not in a good way. That year, a total of 1,004 rhinos were poached (illegally hunted) in South Africa, the country where almost all of the world's rhinos live. That's an increase of more than 50 percent from 2012 — when 668 rhinos were killed. It was also the most South African rhinos killed in one year.
“The world's rhinos are facing great danger,” says Dr. Naomi Doak of TRAFFIC, a conservation group that works to stop the trafficking (buying and selling) of wildlife.
The rise in poaching is due to an increasing demand for rhino horns in Asian countries such as Vietnam and China, where the horns are used as key ingredients in traditional Asian medicines. Some people believe taking ground-up rhino horn can help treat pain, fevers, and cancer (though these uses have not been medically proven to be effective). The demand is so great that rhino horns can sell for more than $30,000 a pound in Asia.
Poaching has already had extremely serious results for rhinos. The Western black rhino became extinct in the last ten years. The Javan rhinoceros has almost completely disappeared from Vietnam, with fewer than 50 remaining. Now, African black rhinos and white rhinos are facing disaster. The black rhino is listed as “highly endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Fewer than 5,000 exist. White rhinos are considered “near threatened,” with about 20,150 in the wild.
Many nations are now taking steps to protect rhinos. The governments of several countries have signed agreements to fight rhino poaching by making the sale of rhino horns illegal, catching poachers and smugglers (走私者), and increasing public awareness about the problem.
South Africa has signed agreements with Vietnam and China to fight wildlife trafficking between the countries. It is developing similar agreements with Mozambique, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.
“These countries must join together if they hope to stop this stealing of southern Africa's natural heritage (遗产),” says Tom Milliken, TRAFFIC's rhino expert. “Rhino-horn trafficking represents a threat to the basic structure of society.”
28. Why was 2013 a record-breaking year
A. More rhinos were trafficked than ever.
B. The largest number of rhinos was killed.
C. It saw the highest increase in rhino prices.
D. The number of rhinos dropped to the lowest.
29. Why do some Asians want to buy rhino horns
A. To seek pleasure.
B. To do experiments.
C. For health benefits.
D. For personal collection.
30. What is the focus of Paragraph 4
A. The serious situation of rhinos.
B. The importance of protecting rhinos.
C. The measures taken to protect rhinos.
D. The causes of rhinos' being endangered.
31. What does Tom Milliken think of rhino poaching
A. It endangers other wildlife.
B. It is dangerous and damaging.
C. It helps to develop the economy.
D. It has been brought under control.

Jack White is a 17-year-old student who has already published a collection of poetry with a local publisher. Jack believes switching to an all-boys school from his coed (男女同校的) high school changed his life.
“When I was at my coed school, poetry was for girls not boys. Guys were supposed to like subjects like math, computers, and science. When I wrote poems, the guys at school used to make fun of me and girls didn't want to date me. At my new school, things are different. I don't worry what girls are thinking since there aren't any.”
Jack may not realize that boys and girls also learn and think differently based on specific biological developments. These differences affect how and when boys and girls learn, so single-sex education is actually better for children.
Take, for example, brain development. The areas of the brain involved in language, feelings, physical coordination (协调), and social relationships, develop in a different order and speed in girls and boys. Research has shown that girls' brains develop the connections between language and emotions (情感) earlier than boys' brains. In a single-sex classroom, everyone's brain is developing at similar speeds, so teachers can teach according to their students' actual abilities.
Boys and girls also have different hearing abilities. Girls have a sense of hearing which is two to four times better than boys. Women teachers often speak more quietly, so boys may have more difficulty hearing a woman teacher if she is talking in her “normal” voice. The teacher needs to speak louder to get the boys' attention. In a single-sex school, teachers do not have to keep adjusting (调整) their voice.
Jack might not be aware of the biological arguments why single-sex education is better, but he realizes that he is learning faster at his new school. As Jack says, “I hated writing and studying English in my old coed school, but now I'm a published poet! My new school helped me become comfortable with who I really am.”
32. What do we know about Jack's previous school
A. It's a mixed school.
B. It discouraged poem writing.
C. It didn't provide language classes.
D. It published Jack's poetry collection.
33. Why does the author say single-sex education is better for children
A. Girls are smarter than boys.
B. Boys are easily distracted by girls.
C. Boys and girls have natural differences.
D. Boys and girls are good at different subjects.
34. What will happen in a single-sex classroom
A. All students learn at the same speed.
B. Teachers have to work extremely hard.
C. Students will learn to express their feelings fast.
D. Teachers know students' abilities and teach accordingly.
35. When teaching boys, women teachers should _____.
A. act bravely
B. speak softly
C. raise their voices
D. lay down strict rules

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Pollution
Pollution happens when the environment is dirtied, by waste, chemicals, and other harmful substances. Pollution is a problem all over the world. But it is especially bad in large cities with a lot of industries and cars. 36
Wildfires, volcanoes, and industrial chemicals cause some air pollution. But most air pollution comes from burning fossil fuels (矿物燃料). These include coal, oil, and natural gas. The burning of fossil fuels may release (释放) harmful gases. Air pollution may cause such diseases as cancer and asthma. It also leads to polluted rain that can harm living things. 37
Finally, air pollution damages the ozone layer (臭氧层), which is important because it protects Earth against harmful rays from the sun.
Causes of water pollution are easy to see. People dump (倾倒) garbage and dirty water into rivers, lakes and oceans. Factories or cities sometimes release poisonous chemicals, and other wastes into water. These chemicals may make the groundwater unfit to drink. 38
Littering, or throwing garbage on the ground, is a form of land pollution. Litter can destroy the habitats of plants and animals. The buildup of dangerous chemicals in the ground is another form of land pollution. The chemicals may come from farms or factories. 39 They may even harm people who eat the polluted plants and animals.
Many governments, environmental groups, and ordinary people are working to control pollution. Governments have passed laws to keep people from releasing dangerous chemicals into the environment. 40 Instead they are getting power from the sun, wind, water, and other energy sources that produce less pollution. Many communities use recycling to reduce pollution.
A. Farmers use chemicals to help crops grow.
B. This type of pollution may be seen in big cities.
C. They also can harm fish and other forms of life.
D. These chemicals can spread to plants and animals.
E. In addition, air pollution may be a cause of global warming.
F. There are three main forms of pollution: air, water, and land.
G. Some companies and people are trying to use fewer fossil fuels.

The Sumatran tigers, which often live in the rainforests of the Sumatran islands, are the smallest and have the darkest fur of all tigers.
Unfortunately, they are in danger of extinction. They became endangered mainly for two reasons. First, many of them have been killed by people who want to sell their fur and skins for money. Second, their habitats have been destroyed so there are few areas left where they can live.
Luckily, some measures have been taken by local governments to protect the endangered animals. What we should do is try to act in ways that do not harm them.
