In 1795, Mungo Park, a Scottish explorer, was sent out to discover the course of the Niger River.
Mungo Park set off from the Gambia River. He started his journey dressed in European clothes, with an umbrella and a tall hat.
Park knew little Arabic — he had with him two books, Richardson’s Arabic Grammar and a copy of Irish explorer Daniel Houghton’s journal. Houghton’s journal, which he had read on the voyage (航行) to Africa served him well and he was forewarned to hide his most valuable belongings from the locals. However, at his first stop, Park was taken prisoner by the locals.
After four months, Park finally managed to escape. He had a few belongings left other than his hat but refused to give up the expedition (探险). Park continued on his way to the Niger, reaching the river on 20 July 1796. Park traveled as far as Ségou before returning to the coast and then to England.
Park was a success, and his book Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa sold out rapidly. His 1,000 royalties (稿酬) allowed him to settle in Selkirk. But settled life soon bored him and he looked for a new adventure.
Finally in 1805 Park led an expedition to follow the Niger to its end. Against logic (逻辑) and advice, Mungo Park set off from the Gambia in the rainy season. By the time the expedition reached Sandsanding on the Niger only 11 of the original 40 Europeans were still alive. Park’s letters back to London made no mention of his problems. The party rested for two months but the deaths continued. Sending the local guide, Isaaco, back to Laidley with his journals, Park was determined to continue. Unfortunately, after a journey of over 1,000 miles on the river, Park and his small party were drowned (溺水而死).

“You know, the soft subjects,” says the boy in maths. “The easy ones: the stupid girls at the bottom take them. Like dance. It shouldn’t even be a subject.” We’re choosing subjects for our A-level taster day at school. I see the raised eyebrows when I explain two of my GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) choices are dance and drama.
I was told by advisers that dance and drama wouldn’t help me to get a suitable career. My friends told me I’d get bored of dance and switch to science within the first month.
But taking GCSE dance was the best decision I ever made. Dance gives me something to pour my head and heart into. It gives me a feeling of belonging, creativity, security (安全) and freedom.
The education secretary Nicky Morgan has put emphasis on (强调) science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), saying that students who focus on the arts risk their careers. Stopping young people from expressing themselves at such a young age is not doing them any favours. Perhaps Nicky Morgan has forgotten to open the door of having a drive to study that subject day in, day out. It shouldn’t matter what that subject is.
I don’t doubt the influence that STEM subjects can have on the people that love them. But to force children into one field is cruel (残忍的). As much as I try, I’m not good at and don’t love physics, biology or maths. I don’t want a career in these areas.
There has been a decrease in the number of state schools offering arts subjects taught by specialist teachers. I can’t even imagine how it feels to be told that you don’t teach a “real subject” by an 8-year-old boy.
To the teachers, the parents, the government I say: Let children make their own decisions. Let them live in the present. Let them have a real, unlimited education.
28. How does the boy in maths feel about dance
A. Useless.
B. Difficult.
C. Beautiful.
D. Important.
29. After the author took GCSE dance, she _____.
A. lost interest in it
B. kept her mind on it
C. turned to other subjects
D. struggled with her lessons
30. What do we know about Nicky Morgan
A. She encourages students to learn soft subjects.
B. She suggests students take a risk in their careers.
C. She underlines the importance of STEM subjects.
D. She allows students to express themselves freely.
31. What’s the present situation of arts subjects
A. They attract much attention worldwide.
B. They are taught by non-professionals.
C. They are considered less important.
D. They have made great progress.
D
Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I hate small talk!” the minute you walk into a party If so, you might be an introvert (内向的人). Introverts hate to chat about “small” subjects with people. They are fine when you talk one on one but seem to get lost in the crowd when there’s a group around.
If you’re talking to an introvert, you might find that your first few conversations go one of two ways. Either they’ll seem to get bored and not say much or they’ll seem to skate over small talk in favor of more in-depth topics. What you need to know is that the introvert is not being rude. It’s just that they don’t like small talk. Here’s why.
Small talk serves as a gateway toward deeper conversation. Some introverts don’t realize that small talk will actually help them get to the bigger topics. You don’t need to stay on small talk forever. However, sometimes introverts feel that even the short amount (数量) of time it takes to get into the real conversation is a waste of time. Small talk is very fast. Someone says something and this should be followed up with a quick response. But introverts like to chew on (深思) their words before saying them aloud. Before they answer, they’ll mull over different thoughts.
Small talk by its very nature invites more people to join in. The more people who join the conversation, the more the introvert will tend to (倾向于) step back. As a result, they’ll be quiet. Small talk is about throwing out subjects in the hope that one or more of them can be turned into a common point of interest.
The listening involved with small talk is not in-depth. The purpose is about listening “lightly” so you can figure out the right topics to spend some time on. Introverts tend to be great listeners, but they use active listening rather than light listening. This makes them wonderful friends, but can also make it difficult for new people to understand why they’re so quiet.
32. How do introverts respond to a chat
A. They try to avoid it.
B. They get excited about it.
C. They give it their full attention.
D. They focus on unimportant topics.
33. What do we know about small talk
A. It goes slowly.
B. It costs people a lot of time.
C. It contributes to deeper topics.
D. It provides much useful information.
34. What does the underlined phrase “mull over” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Give up.
B. Think over.
C. Write down.
D. Forget about.
35. How can we become a good talker in small conversations
A. Figure out the deep meaning of questions.
B. Think twice before answering questions.
C. Try to find shared topics.
D. Be a quiet listener.

选做题
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
It wasn’t too long ago that I entered my freshman year of college. I remember attending my first week of classes, followed by visiting the activities exhibition. I walked around aimlessly trying to find something I would be interested in. After passing by several different booths (摊位), I spotted a sign in big letters, “Study Abroad Program.” I picked up a few flyers (宣传页) and immediately put myself on the email list for upcoming travel opportunities.
At the blink (眨眼) of an eye, it was suddenly a year later and I was already in my second year and had failed to travel anywhere with the study abroad program. Once I realized this, I thought to myself, “That’s it. I’m stepping outside of my comfort zone (舒适区) and signing up to go somewhere amazing this summer.”
The next thing I knew I was emailing several teachers attempting to get more information about the possible trips I could attend this upcoming summer.
Before I knew it, I was packing (打包) my bags to travel to England for three weeks.
This was the best experience of my life and something that every college student should experience if the opportunity arises. Studying in a different country allows students to step outside their comfort zone and grow as a person. Not only do you get to experience a beautiful different country’s culture, but you also get to explore what it has to offer.
One of the best and most important things of studying abroad is that students will gain friendships that they may never have had the opportunity to do so before. When I first left for England I was in a group with seven other students — who I had never met before. By the end of my trip, I can confidently say that some of those students have become life- long best friends. I most likely would have never had this opportunity to gain friendships with these students if I was not willing to try something new.
Studying abroad is an amazing experience that compares to no other. The memories and friendships that are made on these trips are ones that you will never be able to forget.
1. What did the author do in the exhibition
A. She put up a booth.
B. She made a new friend.
C. She gave away flyers to students.
D. She found a program that interested her.
2. What did the author do in her second year
A. She made several study trips.
B. She traveled abroad for three weeks.
C. She wasted her time replying to emails.
D. She planned to stay in a familiar environment.
3. What does the author think of studying abroad
A. Discouraging.
B. Comfortable.
C. Eye-opening.
D. Bitter-sweet.
4. What’s the most important thing about studying abroad according to the author
A. Experiencing different cultures.
B. Building one’s confidence.
C. Enjoying friendships.
D. Exploring new life.
B
What happens to unused railroad tracks Many become key links in a growing nationwide network of recreational trails (休闲步道) for people of all ages and abilities.
Between 1900 and 1950, passenger trains were the primary links between communities throughout the United States. As the government built highways and airline routes increased, train service declined (减少).
Fifty years ago, Virginia’s Washington and Old Dominion Railroad (W&OD) saw its last train. Today, the “W&OD” is a popular 45-mile paved (铺设的) example of a rails-to-trails transformation (转变).
In the Washington area, 40 organizations have joined the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), forming the Capital Trails Coalition. This group’s goal is to create hundreds of miles of connected trails in the area, encouraging active, healthy living.
Cardin Babcock, 9, of Alexandria Bicycles along the W&OD in Arlington, said, “It’s flat and doesn’t have a lot of hills. It’s easy for kids of any age.” Cardin said she loves seeing turtles, ducks and birds along her way. Historical signs show the trail’s railroad history.
The seven-mile Capital Crescent Trail, formerly part of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, is a scenic paved path from Georgetown’s waterfront to Bethesda.
At Lake Artemesia near College Park, the paved 1.4-mile trail circling the lake led RJ Winston, 8, and his dad to places where he and his cousins could fish. “Be sure to bring lots of food, water and bait (鱼饵)!” RJ advised.
Layla Stark, 8, whose mom works for RTC, loves bicycling with her family along the five-mile Holmes Run Trail next to Alexandria’s Ben Brenman Park. Turn left and they pass several playgrounds within a mile. Turn right and they can ride to Cameron Run Regional Park, which has a mini-golf course and a water park.
“There’s so much nature,” Layla said. “In the winter, when the river was frozen and covered with snow, we saw fox and rabbit footprints.”
These trails can be accessed from several points, so you can choose how far you want to go. Some require road crossings — usually well-marked — such as in downtown Vienna. Some trails, such as the Mount Vernon Trail between Alexandria and George Washington, can be crowded on weekends. Know your abilities when choosing a trail.
5. What happens to railways no longer in use
A. They are turned into highways.
B. They become scenic tracks.
C. They are taken away.
D. They serve as trails.
6. What does RTC aim to do
A. Protect the railway industry.
B. Attract more organizations.
C. Give a hand to cyclists.
D. Build trails network.
7. What did RJ suggest
A. Taking enough food.
B. Keeping away from lakes.
C. Cycling with your family.
D. Staying away from wild animals.
8. What can we learn about these trails
A. They can be entered from different points.
B. They divide into two directions.
C. They are busy on the weekends.
D. They are poorly equipped.

Dear Emma,
I’m happy to hear from you. Welcome to Beijing! In order to help you get ready for the trip, I’d like to give you some advice.
First, download a translation app on your mobile phone, which you will find very helpful while communicating with Chinese people. Second, the weather in Beijing is still hot, so you should take some T-shirts, dresses or shorts with you. Last, you can live in my house, so you needn’t book a hotel room beforehand. I’ll prepare a room for you and be your guide if I’m free. By the way, don’t forget to take your passport.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I wish you a happy trip.
