On February 1, 1960, in the town of Greensboro, North Carolina, four African American college students sat down on chairs at the lunch counter (便餐馆) of the local Woolworth’s department store. They weren’t sitting down for a cup of coffee or a piece of bread. They were sitting down to change the world, or, at least, a part of it.
Throughout the South, prejudice (偏见) against African Americans was common. The Woolworth’s lunch counter — like many restaurants, hotels, and hospitals — refused to serve African Americans. This humiliating (屈辱的) treatment made many African Americans unhappy and begin to say, “No more!” So, Ezell A. Blair, Jr., Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond — the four college students — decided to fight back without violence. The four men walked into Woolworth’s with a clear plan of action. They knew the servers would refuse to serve them. They knew other customers would treat them rudely. But no matter what, they would remain peaceful and polite, even to those who behaved hatefully toward them.
They’d been inspired (鼓舞) by civil-rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King asked African Americans to challenge (挑战) prejudice and demand equal treatment. But he did not believe in using violence to get results. Dr. King said that love can lead to understanding, but hate only leads to more hate. African Americans, he said, must do something quite difficult: fight violence and hate with peace and love.
The four men in Greensboro believed in the teachings of Dr. King. But as they took their seats at the counter, they had to wonder: Would these ideas work In fact they did. By the end of the week, the four were joined by hundreds of other protesters. News of their “sit-in” spread around the country, and soon other groups were protesting at Woolworth’s around the country. By July, the lunch counter at Woolworth’s was open to African Americans. Everyone has their favourite scenes and characters in Harry Potter books and films. One of the most memorable scenes for many came early on in the series. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the owls (猫头鹰) began to send letters to Harry inviting him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Owls were then mentioned frequently in the books and created amazing images in the films.
Everyone around the world loves the Harry Potter series. But if there has been one bad result of J.K. Rowling’s creative gifts, it is the craze that has swept through many countries for owning an owl. Many experts suggest that because Harry Potter fans would like to own their own owl, there is a strong chance that owls may soon start to die out.
There are over 200 different species of owl. They are nocturnal birds, which means they are awake at night, usually hunting. They have large round eyes that face forwards on their flat faces. Owls also like to be on their own, unless it is the mating season.
Indonesia is one of the main countries that are now selling owls to young and old Harry Potter fans. There are many bird markets throughout the country, with the largest being Pramuka in Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta. Birds are Indonesia’s most popular pet, with about 20 percent of all homes keeping at least one. It is thought that about 13,000 owls are sold each year in Indonesia’s bird markets. They cost between $10 and $30. This is affordable for most families where the parents work. Most of the owls have been taken from the wild and do not live for very long once they have been caught.
Not everyone is happy about the situation, including the Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling. She said, “If anybody has been influenced by my books, to think an owl would be happiest shut in a small cage (笼子) and kept in a house, I would like to take this opportunity to say as forcefully as I can, ‘You are wrong!’”
28. What purpose does Paragraph 1 serve
A. To bring up the topic.
B. To express the main idea.
C. To advertise Harry Potter books.
D. To describe the author’s favourite animal.
29. What harmful result do the Harry Potter series bring about
A. Owls being forced out of their homes.
B. An increase in the animal attacks.
C. Damage to children’s creativity.
D. A fall in the numbers of owls.
30. What do we know about Indonesia’s bird markets
A. They mainly sell owls.
B. They have a ready sale for owls.
C. They usually sell home-raised owls.
D. They sell owls at a comparatively high price.
31. What did J.K. Rowling think of the situation
A. It is something she dislikes.
B. It would be understandable.

Elizabeth Bishop is considered one of the best American poets of the 20th century. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1911. Her dad died when she was just a baby and her mom never recovered (恢复) from the loss; she went to live with her grandparents in Nova Scotia, Canada when she was five. Eventually Bishop attended Vassar College, where she began to write poetry.
At Vassar she discovered Marianne Moore’s poetry and met “Ms. Moore” and began their life-long friendship. She later met poet Robert Lowell. She wrote tons and tons of letters to both of them, which is good for us because we would otherwise (否则) know very little of her personal life. Bishop’s poetry is sometimes considered objective and cold because it shows almost nothing about the poet or her life.
Bishop published her first book of poetry in 1946 and wrote until her death in 1979. She would spend years working on a single poem. Her poems are not the result of hasty scribbling (匆忙乱写) on paper while eating breakfast. Over a lifetime of writing, she only published about 275 pages of poetry, and about 40 of those are translations. She would look through drafts of poems again and again and improve them until they were as close to perfect as she could get them.
Reading Elizabeth Bishop is like being transported to the very place, the very moment she’s writing about. She leads us to a microscope (显微镜) so we can see every smallest part of the scene. It seems she’s always asking us to notice more, and more until the poem is so clear in our minds that it’s almost painful — like a light that’s too bright. It might take your eyes a while to get used to it, but once they do, you’ll like what you see.
32. What do we know about Bishop’s early life
A. She started to write poems at five.
B. She was always encouraged by her parents.
C. She spent her childhood mainly in Worcester.
D. She was mainly brought up by her grandparents.
33. Why are Bishop’s letters to Moore and Lowell important
A. They have a deep influence on other poets.
B. They offer much information about her life.
C. They help us study Moore and Lowell’s poetry.
D. They prove she had friendships with famous poets.
34. What can we say about Bishop’s poetic creation
A. She liked to write in the morning.
B. She could write poems at high speed.
C. She tried her best to achieve perfection.
D. She published hundreds of books of poetry.
35. Which can be used to describe the style of Bishop’s poems
A. Exact.
B. Informal.
C. Humorous.
D. Enthusiastic.

It’s been several years since Super Ewan started his task. Every month, he still visits the same park to hand out clothes, food, and supplies to people who are hungry or homeless — his Super Friends. 40 “No matter what,” Ewan says, “I will always keep helping people.”

I used become angry easily and didn’t get along well with anyone. Little things like people looked at me could get me angry. When people got too close to us, I would push them away. My mom was no exception. I don’t understand at that time when my mom had done for me. But growing up, I realised I’d been causing endless trouble for my family. I was either accidentally breaking something and talking back to them. However, no matter how hard that was to take care of me, my parent never gave up. Finally, I realised I loved them deep down in my heart. Now I know I shouldn’t treat them bad and I should be nice to them all of the time.

When the young donkey (驴) Daisy May came to us, she was pregnant. With no donkey experience, I was unprepared for what might come next.
After some difficulty, Daisy’s baby was born. I thought the poor thing was dead. I planned to put the loss behind us and make sure she never got pregnant again. Just then, I heard a little noise. I couldn’t believe that baby was breathing and looking at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was.
When Samson was nine months old, I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day to wean (使……断奶) him, but otherwise he went wherever she did. I thought she would be lost without him. His donkey stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoyed playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.
I asked a worker to customize a harness (马具) for my three little donkeys. When I brought it home I taught them one by one how to pull a cart (马车). Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.
That was 15 years ago. Now, the most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little famous. People come from all over to see him perform. The neighbors bring their grandchildren, and my sons bring their friends.
Samson shakes hands, unties my shoe, picks up a hat and more. And when I ask him if he has any bad habits, he tries to pick my pocket! He surprisingly learned these tricks himself. I just ask him to do them and he understands.
The relationship I have with my “baby” Samson has been an amazing experience. Every day is a fun day with this superstar donkey.

He has jumped off tall buildings, been lit on fire, and fought the deadliest people on the planet. And you know what For Greg Rementer, it’s all in a day’s work.
Rementer is part of a group of men and women who bring your favorite action scenes to life on film and television. He was hired (雇用) to stand in for actors when a scene carries real risk or requires special skills. On the set of Captain America: Civil War, for example, Rementer stepped in for actor Sebastian Stan. Rementer had to jump 45 feet from one building onto another — after being thrown down a flight of stairs.
Stunts (特技) have always been part of movies. But in the early days of Hollywood, actors generally did their own stunts. When actors didn’t do their own stunts, filmmakers would simply hire the first person they could find crazy enough to give it a go. Accidents that resulted in serious injury were not uncommon. Today, most stunt performers know how to safely fall from great heights. Many have sports backgrounds. Bobby Holland Hanton, who performed in Avengers: Age of Ultron, was a gymnast. Katie Eischen, who worked in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, did volleyball. As for Rementer, he has been studying martial arts (武术) since primary school.
Rementer loves his job, but it’s hardly glamorous. Days on set can be long and hard; it’s common to work 14 hours at a time in uncomfortable locations. A stunt that lasts a few seconds can take hours to set up. Plus, stunt performers must train continuously to stay in shape.
Being a stunt performer today is much safer than it used to be, thanks to better equipment and strict rules in Hollywood. But injuries are still part of the job. After all, if stunts were completely safe, stunt performers wouldn’t be needed. “I’ve been fortunate,” Rementer says, explaining that he hasn’t had any serious accidents. “I’ve had some broken arms, broken toes, and a lot of bruises (瘀伤). But when you’re doing things like riding wires into concrete walls, you’re going to feel it. You just have to be ready to get up and go again.”
5. What was Rementer hired to do
A. Bring boring stories to life.
B. Encourage actors to do sports.
C. Perform dangerous actions for actors.
D. Instruct Sebastian Stan in special skills.
6. Why did the author mention some stunt performers in Paragraph 3
A. To introduce their stunts.
B. To praise their great skills.
C. To show they are highly trained.
D. To stress the importance of sports backgrounds.
7. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “glamorous” in Paragraph 4
A. Tiring.
B. Attractive.
C. Dangerous.
D. Meaningful.
8. What can we infer about Rementer from his words
A. He takes pleasure in risky jobs.
B. He suffers misfortune every day.
C. He has a strong sense of professionalism.
D. He has a love-hate relationship with his job.

One possible version:
With the development of science and technology, our life will change a lot in many ways in the future.
First, we won’t have to change clothes, because we’ll wear a special kind of clothes. Wearing them, we can be able to change the colour we like anytime and we can be warm when we feel cold and be cool when we feel hot. Besides, all of us will live in beautiful houses, and if we want to move, they’ll take us to anywhere we want to go immediately. Last, each family will have a robot. Because of them, we won’t be busy with housework, and when we get ill, we won’t have to go to see a doctor.
Life in the future will be much more wonderful. I think my dream will come true.
