第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
[A]
My name is Christian Domingos. I have a SuperDAD in my life. Every kid dreams about one day being just like his dad. I have a dream to be one day like a SuperDAD who isn't my real dad. My SuperDAD is my best friend, my hero, my superman, Ruben Trevino. Ruben works as a project manager. In my eyes, a SuperDAD's behavior is what sets them apart from all others.
Ruben is said to be known by his quiet courage and determination in his work. He is the source of strength in my family. He provides me with guidance and stability (稳定). He doesn't just guide me, listen to me and show me how to lead my life; he's the man I want to be like. I admire him for his intellectual ability, friendly behavior, loving nature and kindness. He has always been an inspiring (鼓舞人心的) example in my life.
I want to be just like him when I get older and not for all of his good qualities, but for his heart. My mom got sick with cancer years back as our family went through some hard times. During those hard times, Ruben showed me how to get through my own hard times at school — I was being bullied (欺凌) — and still be supportive and strong at home. He didn't teach me to be tough and hurt another person. He taught me how to have a heart. He put things in perspective (正确处理事情) and said that the kid was probably having a hard day. Over time, Ruben has taught me to lead with my heart. I like being me and how Ruben led me to be the person I am today.
Ruben is a wonderful man. He is the person in my life that I can trust the most. I could tell my mother anything in the world and she'll understand me, but Ruben was there for me when my mother couldn't be. That is a true SuperDAD, being behind the heart and soul (灵魂) of a family in good times and bad.
21. What can we infer about Ruben Trevino
A. He is every kid's dream superman.
B. He behaves rather differently from others.
C. He is a respectable man of great character.
D. He helps many families in one way or another.
22. What did Ruben do when the author was bullied
A. He helped punish the bully.
B. He told him to fight back bravely.
C. He patiently taught the bully a lesson.
D. He told him to be generous and forgiving.
23. What kind of feeling does the author show in the text
A. Admiration.
B. Sympathy.
C. Worry.
D. Dissatisfaction.

Only thrilling for art addicts
Towards the end of the Second World War, Towards the end of the Second World War, America sent a special group of soldiers to Europe to restore famous art pieces to their rightful owners. The Monuments Men, directed by George Clooney, is inspired by this culture-preserving task.
Set in 1943, historian Frank Stokes (Clooney) successfully persuades the US president of the need to get back stolen art from the Nazis. Frank believes only by returning the art pieces to their owners can civilization develop as a whole.
So he gathers seven fine arts and history experts; after some basic training, the group went into the heart of the battlefield to recover missing art pieces.
Though there's some enjoyable acting, the film suffers from a lack of focus.
The script (剧本) is not particularly amusing either: nearly two-hour search only manages to raise a few laughs, and far more yawns covered by popcorn-coated hands.
If you're an art lover, I suppose the simple idea of saving art alone may be absolutely thrilling.
— Chris Lau
Brutal (残忍的), beautiful fighter
The film 12 Years a Slave will make your heart break, but also sing in celebration of the amazing strength of the human spirit.
British director Steve McQueen's movie is all the more remarkable because it is based on a true story. Chiwetel Ejiofor, stars as Solomon Northup, a black man whose happy life is turned upside down.
The educated violinist is born a free man in New York state. He is abducted (绑架), and taken to the Deep South and sold as a slave.
He is passed between owners, tortured (折磨) and even left for dead, yet remains determined to lift his spirits and those of other slaves.
It's not an easy film to watch because of the many heartbreaking scenes: lynchings, whippings, assaults. These scenes force us to see the brutal reality of slavery — and question now things could have been allowed to go so wrong.
Ejiofor impresses the audience with his ability to express suffering with the simplest of facial expressions on his face.
It's no surprise this has been nominated (提名) for nine Oscars.

About 20,000 years ago, much of Europe, Asia, North and South America was covered by huge sheets (片) of ice, each many kilometres thick. Since then, the ice has gradually melted and the ice sheets have retreated. Today, the only ice sheets on Earth's land masses are found in Antarctica and Greenland. Some ice also occurs as glaciers (冰河) in mountainous regions and as floating ice floes (浮冰块) in the Arctic Ocean and around Antarctica.
At first sight, these remote left-overs from the last Ice Age seem of little importance for most of us today. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Many scientists believe that our planet is warming as a result of the greenhouse gases that we are pumping into the atmosphere. If the planet becomes warmer, the ice sheets will start to melt, causing sea level to rise perhaps several metres by the end of this century. Such a rise would cause widespread flooding of low-lying coastal areas and threaten many large cities.
Observations from space suggest that parts of the major ice sheets are beginning to melt more rapidly. Meanwhile, recent satellite images have also shown that unusually large areas of sea ice have been melting during the Arctic summer. Although sea level will not be affected by the melting of the floating ice, there will be other important environmental changes. For example, ice sheets act like a mirror, reflecting (反射) sunlight and cooling Earth. If the ice disappears, Earth is likely to become warmer and major climate changes could occur. Wildlife living in the polar regions may also be destroyed.
28. What does the underlined word “retreated” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Grown.
B. Reduced.
C. Formed.
D. Disappeared.
29. What's most common people's attitude towards the ice sheets
A. Optimistic.
B. Critical.
C. Sincere.
D. Unconcerned.
30. What would happen if the greenhouse gases continue to increase
A. Vast amounts of land will be flooded.
B. Large cities in the world will disappear.
C. The sea level will drop to its lowest level.
D. Global temperatures will drop sharply.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Ice sheets melt faster than floating ice.
B. The melting of floating ice isn't damaging.
C. Sea ice melting will have disastrous effects.
D. Space research contributes to climate changes.
[D]
For most of us Veterans Day just means a chance to enjoy an extra day off from school or work. However this November 11th, be sure to spend a few minutes on its true purpose, by acknowledging (感谢) the men and women who have served in our armed forces.
And you don't have to stop at just this one day. Join the over 10,000 youth members of the Young Marines group that honor these brave men and women all year long with special events and completely spoil (宠坏) them for an entire week, from November 4th to 11th, by visiting hospitalized veterans, performing chores (杂务) for disabled veterans and even organizing community-wide social events. The program open to kids ranging from the age of eight all the way to high school, is a great way to not only show your appreciation, but also get a chance to do some fun activities with like-minded kids and make a real difference in a veteran's life.
People often believe that Memorial Day and Veterans Day are celebrated for the same reason. There is however a subtle but important difference between the two. While both honor our military personnel, the former is a day to remember and pay respect to all the men and women that died serving our country in a war, while Veterans Day is to celebrate the soldiers who are still alive and served in the forces at any time, during peace or war.
Though several other countries celebrate this day in honor of their own veterans, the meaning is slightly different for each one. Some like the United Kingdom, celebrate it in honor of all soldiers — living or dead, while others like Canada celebrate it to honor all living veterans. They also call it different names. France and New Zealand still call it Armistice Day. In the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada it is referred to as Remembrance Day, while Malta and South Africa celebrate it as Poppy Day.
No matter what it is called, the reason for observing the day is the same — to show our appreciation to the brave men and women who sacrifice everything to make this world a safer place for the rest of us.
32. What's the prime purpose of Veterans Day
A. To let people have one more day off.
B. To show respect for soldiers' contributions.
C. To organize fun activities for school children.
D. To celebrate America's success in world wars.
33. What can kids do at the Young Marines group program
A. Help take care of sick veterans.
B. Organize parties for disabled veterans.
C. Share stories with veterans and other kids.
D. Entertain veterans by singing and dancing.
34. What can we learn about Memorial Day
A. It is in remembrance of war dead.
B. It is another name for Veterans Day.
C. It is observed on November 11th every year.
D. It honors soldiers who are serving in the military.
35. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about

选做题
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
[A]
Madeleine Liu and Angela Wang are both students in Grade 11 at Vancouver's West Point Grey Academy. Last night they won the first prize in Startup Weekend Vancouver's 7th yearly competition. They were awarded $10,000 for their newly created company they've named Culitech.
Their goal is to develop a line of smart cutlery (knives, forks and spoons used for eating). The instruments will use a technology called near-infrared spectrometry (近红外光谱法) to warn users about the nutritional (营养的) content in their food, as well as the presence of allergens (过敏原), poisons and bacteria.
The products are still in the research-and-development stage. The teens are now trying to reduce the size of a spectrometer so they can commercialize (使供应市场) this product.
Ms. Liu and Ms. Wang are hopeful that their new product will not only be good business but will help people around the world.
“In Canada, one in 13 people have a food allergy, and in the US every three minutes somebody is sent to the emergency room for a food-related allergy,” Ms. Liu said. “So right now there is a need for medical invention.”
For Ms. Wang, the motivation behind the product is a bit more personal. She originally thought of smart cutlery as a solution to help fight the spread of helicobacter pylori, a dangerous bacterium that can lead to cancer and is common in China.
“I realized there's a need for this product because my mom has helicobacter pylori,” she said.
So the product can be made to fit these two very specific needs. The teens hope a bacteria-specific version of the product can be marketed in China. The other version, which focuses on identifying allergens and alerting users about nutritional content, may find its home in North America.
But while building a successful business is important to Ms. Liu, she said her long-term goal is to be able to help people. She also plans to create social organizations in the future.
“I've been thinking of one that can help people that are unemployed get an education or find a job,” she said.
Both girls have yet to decide where they want to go to university, but they are sure they want to study science and business, and get the skills to make Culitech a reality.

A particularly wet summer in the Midwest may mean fewer pumpkin pies on holiday tables this fall. Pumpkin brand Libby's, owned by Nestlé, supplies about 80 percent of the canned pumpkin used worldwide. This fall, the company reports that unusually soggy weather has left farmers with about half as many pumpkins as usual.
Libby's depends on a special strain (品种) of pumpkins grown in Illinois, known as Libby's Select Dickinson pumpkins. Dickinson pumpkins are especially well suited for baking — they're different from the pumpkins typically carved into jack-o' -lanterns.
Plants need water to grow, but pumpkins generally do best in warm, relatively dry conditions. If there's too much rain, they don't grow to their full size and have a higher water content. Damp conditions also encourage the spread of certain diseases that affect pumpkins.
This past June (an important time of year for pumpkin growth), Illinois received 9.42 inches of rain — more than double the average rainfall for the month. “Out of 121 years of data, that is easily an all-time record,” Department of Agriculture meteorologist Brad Rippey told Climatewire.
The record rainfall is part of a trend (趋势), particularly in Illinois. The state has experienced a 10 percent increase in rainfall during the past century and several years in the past decade that were unusually wet or dry. “We're fairly certain that's tied to climate change,” climatologist Jim Angel of the University of Illinois told Climatewire.
This year isn't the first time that rain has caused trouble for Libby's. In 2009, heavy rains affected the harvest, rather than the growing period. Fields were too wet for tractors to gather the crops, and many pumpkins rotted (腐烂) in the fields.
The company is hopeful that it can meet the needs of this year's holiday bakers but suggests stocking up on pumpkin sooner rather than later. Once the last can of pumpkin has shipped out to stores, there won't be any more available until next year's harvest.
6. What does the underlined word “soggy” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Rather freezing.
B. Extremely hot.
C. Quite mild.
D. Very wet.
7. What is Libby's facing this year
A. Falling sales.
B. Labor surplus.
C. Material shortage.
D. Fierce competition.
8. What can we infer about this year's Dickinson pumpkins grown in Illinois
A. They may taste better.
B. They may grow smaller than before.
C. They may be used as jack-o' -lanterns.
D. They may be harvested in the early summer.
9. What happened to pumpkin farmers in 2009
A. They had a poor harvest.
B. They benefited from Libby's.
C. They stocked many pumpkins.
D. They used tractors to gather the crops.
10. Where does this text probably come from

Last Friday, our class visited the Anti-Japanese War Museum. When we went into the exhibition room, we were attracted by the pictures and introductions about the war on the walls. Some of us took notes carefully and we were all shocked at the cruelty of the war. Then we gathered and listened to an old soldier who told us about his experiences during the war. We were very glad to meet such a hero. Last, we all came to the front of the museum and took a picture with the old soldier in memory of our visit.
By visiting the museum, we can learn what happened in the war and treasure our peaceful life.
