Volunteer Experience
Laura Posted 5 December, 2021 5:10 PM
My dad asked me to volunteer with our local Meals On Wheels when I was 15. We volunteered every Friday evening. We delivered hot meals to elderly people in our town who were unable to make their own food. I really enjoyed it. The experience made me think a lot more about other people and their needs.
Haley Posted 5 December, 2021 6:15 PM
At the age of 16, I volunteered with African Elephant Research Unit at Knysna Elephant Park. Every Saturday, my parents sent me to the park. There, I cleaned elephant camps, prepared their food, and took notes on elephant behavior. It was an eye-opening experience and I realized I could do more than I thought I could.
Kyla Posted 6 December, 2021 4:30 PM
Volunteering with Tree People was fun and rewarding. As we say at Tree People, trees need people and people need trees! I volunteered each Sunday last year to plant and care for trees. I got the chance to plant trees in local parks and city streets. I plan to continue volunteering regularly next year.

You should always support your kids and their natural talents. And if you nurture(培育)them, great things will happen. That's what 9-year-old Joe Whale's parents thought when they encouraged their son to keep drawing, even though he got into trouble for doodling(涂鸦)during class.
They sent Joe to an after-school art class and his artistic abilities were quickly noticed by those around him. In fact, Joe was invited to decorate the dining room of the "Number 4" restaurant in Shrewsbury, England. Now, Joe is known as The Doodle Boy and has his own website, as well as social media(媒体)pages showing off his wonderful art.
According to Greg, Joe's dad, his son has always loved drawing and "was added to the Gifted Register in primary school aged 4". Greg also talked about how long it took Joe to finish his drawings on the dining room walls in the restaurant. "Joe spent about 122 hours decorating the wall."
What's more, Greg had some suggestions for parents who want to encourage their kids to develop their talent: "I would advise parents to encourage their children to always follow their interest and dreams-research local workshops or groups within your local community.
Joe's teacher recognized his talent and posted his work on Instagram. His drawings caught the eye of the "Number 4" restaurant which asked him to come over and decorate their walls with his doodles. In 1957, the first spaceship was sent up to travel around the earth, and it started the time of Space Age. Years later, astronauts traveled around the earth and men walked on the moon. Today, space exploration(探索)continues, and governments try hard to make new discoveries. However, there has been one big change: private companies(公司)are entering the field of space travel.
Space X has been triumphant in space travel. They made the spaceship to work for the International Space Station(ISS). Elon Musk, the boss, wants to do more. He hopes that Space X will be able to send people to Mars by 2025.
Another fan of space travel is Sir Richard Branson. His company is called Virgin Galactic. He wants to open space travel to everyone. The company has sold almost 700 future trips to space at a high price. The tourists come from countries all over the world and are of different ages.
These private companies are lucky. They don't have to wait for money from the government. However, they also have problems and accidents happen sometimes. In 2014, a Virgin spaceship fell down during a test flight. The 39-year-old pilot was killed. In 2016, another Space X spaceship exploded(爆炸). No one was hurt, but important parts of it were lost.
The exploration of the space continues. Some companies want to take people to the moon and back someday. Others want to take people to Mars. The possibilities are endless. Maybe in our life-time, those dreams will come true.

Snow leopards(豹)are so hard to photograph that scientists aren't even sure how many of these endangered animals still live in the wild.
The Snow Leopard Conservancy(SLC)set up 20 cameras in Russia in 2010 to learn more about the big cats. After a full six months, they had exactly zero picture! That's when the organization understood they needed help. And the only people who could help them in finding the leopards were the very people from whom they wanted to protect the animals-local hunters(猎人).
Hunting snow leopards is against the law in Russia, but in the terrible climate of Siberia, the few people living there had to turn to poaching(盗猎)to feed their families.
In 2013, Russian naturalist Sergei Spitsyn approached Mergen Markov, a local hunter, and told him his project. Markov agreed to set up the camera where he knew he would find leopards, and it worked.
Markov, once a poacher, works full time for the conservationists now and has 10 cameras monitoring leopards. "I visit each camera once a month. I have known this whole region since I was a child," he said proudly.
The World Wildlife Fund(WWF)began working with other local villagers in 2015. The village would be paid 40,000 rubles at the end of the year if the picture of a snow leopard is caught. WWF also rents horses from the villagers so that they do not need to make money by poaching anymore. "Today there are far fewer leopard poachers but leopards still get caught in traps set for other animals, so I have to stay watchful," said Markov.
Changing guns for cameras has made a big difference in the lives of these former poachers, the village, and the Russian snow leopards. The number of snow leopards has been rising and their population is expected to recover to normal levels within 10 years.
32. Why was no picture of snow leopards taken in six months
A. SLC's 20 cameras failed to work properly. B. The researchers knew little about the animals
C. The local poachers destroyed these cameras. D. The number of snow leopards was too small.
33. What did Sergei Spitsyn persuade Markov to do
A. Find the poachers. B. Work for SLC. C. Catch more leopards. D. Repair cameras.
34. Why did the WWF begin working with local villagers
A. To prevent villagers hunting animals. B. To help villagers make a living.
C. To get some pictures of snow leopards. D. To rent their horses at a low price.
35. How can we describe the WWF's working with the villagers
A. Kill two birds with one stone. B. Many men, many minds.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Old habits die hard.
