Today, millions of kids round the word will fight childhood obesity (肥胖) by getting up, getting outside and exercising all at the same time. The children are taking part in Project ACES. Fitness expert Len Saunders started the yearly event 22 years ago. He hopes Project ACES will encourage young people everywhere to get fit and live healthy lifestyles. According to the American Heart Association, about 25 million children and teenagers in the United States are overweight. That is nearly 1 in 3 kids. Obesity can lead to many serious health problems. Concerned about it, Saunders decided to do something.
When Project ACES began, Saunders was working at two elementary schools. At first, he imagined a day when students in just those two schools would exercise together. But before long, schools across the country found out about the plan and wanted to take part. By the following year, schools worldwide were signing up.
Valley View Elementary is the host school for the event. Saunders teaches physical education at the school. Valley View plans to hold his Project ACES Day on the playground, where 500 students will get moving with different activities.
Jen Kayne has two kids who attend Valley View Elementary. She says they look forward to the event each year. “My kids count down the days until they get to go outside and exercise with their friends,” Jen Kayne says. “Mr. Saunders encourages our children every day and inspires us to live a healthier lifestyle.”
Saunders’ new book, Keeping Kids Fit, also has tips on how families can exercise. “You might not be able to change the world, but you can change your little corner of it. If I can make a difference to one family member or one child, then I have succeeded,” he says.
24. Why was Project ACES started
A. To help children choose healthy food.
B. To encourage children to lead a healthy life.
C. To spread health information among children.
D. To remind people of childhood obesity problems.
25. What worries Saunders most according to the text

C. It is very popular with her children. D. It will make Mr. Saunders famous.

Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams (阻塞) and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a scheme (计划) to improve the situation.
Under the Velib scheme (‘Velib’ comes from velo liberte, or ‘bicycle freedom’) people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only ?l a day or ?29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20, 000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this. But not everybody thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journey. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle—they’ll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”
28. What can we learn about the Velib scheme
A. Its bikes have no baskets. B. Its bikes are light and colorful.
C. It owns more stations than the subway. D. It aims to make traveling easier.
29. If you use a Velib for 1 hour, how much should you pay
A. ?1. B. ?25. C. ?29. D. ?30.
30. Why do some people disagree with the Velib scheme
A. The cost is rather high. B. It’s not suitable for a long journey.
C. It’s hard to find a proper Velib station. D. The distance between two Velib stations is long.
31. What’s the city spokesman’s attitude towards the bicycle scheme
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Positive.

Those pretty little brown spots on the skin might be common, but freckles (雀斑) remain a bit of a mystery to many—including those who have them. We interviewed three top skin doctors to explain the mysterious spots.
“They get darker in the summertime, when the skin is in strong sunlight, and fade, or lose color, in the wintertime,” says Dr. Joshua Zeichner at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. “The sun’s ultraviolet (紫外线的) rays help some skin cells to produce more melanin (黑色素) in the skin.”
Contrary to popular belief, nobody is born with freckles, which generally don’t pop up until adolescence. That is, some young people start to have freckles when they are developing into adults.
“But freckles often ‘run in the family,’ especially in families that have fair (白皙的) skin,” says Jessica Wu, MD, a Los Angeles-based doctor. “People with fair skin and red or blond hair may have the same skin cells as their parents. Such skin cells are more sensitive to ultraviolet rays, so they produce more melanin in those spots.”
The spots themselves are nothing to fear, but those who have freckles are often fair-skinned as well, which in turn makes them more likely to get skin cancer, warns Dr. Howard Murad, who is known as “the Father of Internal Skincare.”
Freckles can be lightened with proper treatment, and new freckles often fade on their own. As with many things in life, prevention is the key. “Wear sunscreen (防晒霜) every day as part of your lifestyle, like brushing your teeth,” says Zeichner. Wu agrees, “I do warn my patients with freckles to understand the necessity of wearing sunscreen.”
Safe sun practice is important for everyone, but having freckles means you need to be extra careful. “You are likely to get more of them—in addition to risk of skin cancer—if you don’t use sun protection,” warns Wu.
32. What do we know about freckles
A. They have something to do with the sun. B. They can be cleared easily.
C. They disappear completely in winter. D. They usually appear in summer.
33. What does the underlined phrase “pop up” in paragraph 3
A. Remain. B. Change. C. Appear. D. Return.
34. If a fair-skinned patient has freckles, __________.
A. he is probably born with them B. there will be little melanin in his skin
C. skin cells in his family have weaknesses D. he is more likely to develop skin cancer
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce three top skin doctors. B. To provide some knowledge of freckles.
C. To explain the reasons for skin cancer. D. To show how dangerous freckles are.

Teenagers earning money
In the United States, you can only get a full-time job if you are 16 years old or older. But there are things that teenagers can do to earn some spending money. Here are a few ideas.
Parents with young children sometimes want to go out for dinner or to the movies, but they don’t want to leave their children alone. 36 If the children go to bed early, you can do some of your homework!
Some adults have a dog, but they don’t have time to take it for a walk. 37 So some teenagers work as dog walkers. It’s a good idea—you earn money and you’re outside in the fresh air. You get some exercise, too!
Teenagers can deliver (递送) newspapers. You usually ride a bike around a neighborhood and leave a newspaper at each house. 38 You have to get up early, too, because people want to read their newspaper with their breakfast.
39 Some companies pay teens to do online research. They want to know what teens are interested in. It’s a fun and easy way to make money. You can also design web pages for friends or adults.
Sometimes adults pay teenagers to mow their lawns (修整草坪). It’s a great job because you get fresh air and exercise. 40 Then you have regular (经常的) customers, because grass always grows!
A. It brings a lot of safety problems.
B. As is known, dogs need a lot of exercise!
