The UK is divided up into smaller regions called "counties". Devon is one in the southwest of England. It is a really great place to take a holiday, and today I will tell you why I think Devon is such a great place.
First, it's on the coast. This means you can spend plenty of time on the beach, which is good if it is sunny. Of course, you should take an umbrella to the beach as well, just in case it rains —which is quite likely during the British summer! But even if it's raining, there's still a lot to do in Devon. There are loads of very pretty towns, so you can easily spend a day looking at the shops, finding a place to eat some local fish and chips and enjoying an ice cream at the end of your day. If you have a sweet tooth, you will be pleased to know that Devon is famous for its fudge and cream teas.
If you're interested in history, you will find plenty of castles and old houses to visits where ancient kings and queens once lived. Devon is also great if you enjoy spending time outdoors because you will have plenty of opportunities for walking, hiking, cycling, and boating. Devon is rich in natural beauty due to its many hills, forests, beaches and bays. This is also an area by the sea where the cliffs have a different naturally red colour. Many people come to spend a day exploring the rocks. If you are lucky, you can find fossils(化石) of prehistoric animals in the rocks or washed up on the beaches. Isn't that amazing ! There are also many museums describing the dinosaurs which moved about this land millions of years ago. Overall, I think Devon is a great place for a holiday. No matter what age you are, Devon is well worth a visit!

My first trip to Greece took place in the 1960s. There I accepted a challenge to hitchhike(搭便车)with a group of English friends from my university in Birmingham to Athens with little money. For me, a 20-year-old girl, I had not done anything like this before. lt was so hard on the road. We slept in the open air, ate little more than bread and cheese, and depended heavily on the help of strangers. But it helped me learn about European society.
One day, my Greek friend came to see me at the youth hostel and asked me to step outside. He was angry with me. He reminded me of my social background and asked what my parents would say if they saw me living in these conditions like these "dirty" English. After several weeks on the road, we did look tired; but his choice of the word "dirty" interested me. He was showing a historic dislike of the English that some Europeans had. In that part of Europe, both the Turks and the Greeks, who dislike each other to this day, blamed(责怪) the English for their national disasters. He ignored my explanations of having accepted the challenge of hitchhiking. He took me home and his family, especially his mother and sisters, showed me Greek hospitality(好客) at its best.
My experience in Greece could not have differed more from the situation facing Pakistanis—and others seeking shelter —in Greece today. On recent visits to Greece in connection with my study on Islam in Europe, I saw the trouble of the refugees(难民). Some said that they had been physically beaten. However, there are good stories of ordinary Greeks giving shelter to some hopeless refugees. The sense of Greek hospitality that I experienced as a student does exist.
1.What was the author's purpose of taking a trip to Greece in the 1960s

B.To complete a challenge bravely.
C.To learn how to hitchhike to other countries.

2.What did the author probably realize
A.Traveling through Greece was interesting.

A.Many Greeks lived a very bad life.
B.The country hadn't changed much.
C.Many refugees were badly treated.

4.What does the author want to show by giving the example in the last paragraph

Along with silk and paper, gunpowder is another invention by Chinese and the Silk Road helped it spread to the West. The dating of gunpowder is as early as 850 AD. The Chinese used gunpowder to make fireworks and for signal flares. Gunpowder was also thought to have been used in medicine and in alchemy(炼金术). This invention seems to have been discovered in China by accident —by alchemists when doing experiments.
The gunpowder used for military purpose was first recorded in 919 AD. By the 11th century, explosive bombs filled with gunpowder were introduced and used in China. The words "fire cannon" "rocket" and "fireball" appeared time and again in the official Song history as well as two other books written during the same period.
The first detailed description of using the "fire cannon" in warfare was in connection with a battle fought in 1126 when the Song army used it against the invading enemy. The so-called " fire cannon" was a tube made of bamboo filled with gunpowder which, when fired, threw a flaming missile towards the enemy. According to a description of a battle scene in 1132. it took two persons to carry a "fire cannon", and the cannons were fired from a moving platform. And this platform had to be moved close to the wall of the besieged(被围攻的) city.
Gunpowder reached Japan, the Islamic countries and then Europe in the 13th century, and the Arabs improved gunpowder for military use. The early account of gunpowder in Europe was recorded by English philosopher Roger Bacon in the 13th century. One century later the Arabs used it to attack the Spanish town Baza and the next year in 1326 Florence ordered the manufacturing of cannon and cannon balls. From Italy the making of gunpowder soon spread to other European countries, and by the 1350s it had become an effective weapon on the battlefield.

As a boy growing up in India, I had longed to travel abroad. I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s, with great interest.
My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium, Netherlands and Germany.
I have vivid memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad. I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew. The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me, who is otherwise scared of flying.
After spending almost two weeks in Europe, we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt airport, for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine(莱茵河), it was simply an unforgettable experience. I was in a sombre mood on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.
Being the first airline to take me overseas, Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart. Even today. I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline. Flying, in general, for me. has always been an ordeal (terrible and painful experience). Flying on Lufthansa, however, is something I always have and always will look forward to.

A sandstorm refers to a high amount of wind occurring in sandy areas, usually in deserts, where the wind speed is able to lift the top layer of sand from the grounds and push it in every direction. The sand involved in the sandstorm can reach heights of about 3. 05 m~15. 24 m.
It is very dangerous to experience a sandstorm. Sand can get into the nose, eyes, mouth and lungs. If you happen to be caught in a sandstorm, you must protect yourself by wearing masks, scarves and so on.
If you're driving when such a storm approaches, it's advised that you pull off the road, since it's difficult to continue driving. This is also important since vehicles can fail in during sandstorms and you could end up stuck on the road.
Most sandstorms occur in spring, and during the daytime. Much of the area around the Persian Gulf and the Sahara Desert is associated with the most serious storms. Since they're a natural phenomenon, they can't be entirely controlled. In areas that are naturally desert regions, you can't always prevent a sandstorm. There's much evidence that the planet Mars has dust storms, and clearly, no human intervention(介入) is responsible for such. Though it can move whole sand dunes and destroy crops, a sandstorm is not without benefit(益处).
1.Which of the following is TRUE for a sandstorm
A.It occurs not only in deserts but also on the coast.
B.It is very strong because it blows in a direction.
C.The sand in it can be blown up as high as 15 meters.

A.stop your car in the middle of the road B.continue to make your way
C.stop and ask for help D.stop your car on the side of the road
3.When and where are you most likely to see a sandstorm
A.In the Sahara Desert in autumn. B.In the Sahara Desert in spring.
C.Around the Persian Gulf in winter. D.Around the Persian Gulf in summer.

Confucius(551—479 BC) was a thinker, educator, and founder of the Ru School for Chinese thought.
He was a well-known leader in philosophy and he also made many wise phrases and theories about the law, life, and the government that helped many people learn about nature, the world and human beings.
Confucius's social philosophy largely centers around the concept of "ren",which is "loving others" and "honoring one's parents". Those who have developed "ren" are "simple in manner and slow of speech". For Confucius, such concern for others is proved through the practice of the Golden Rule: "What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others."
Confucius thought a good rulership was to have "de" or "virtue" which allows one to win people's support without using any force and keep good order in his state without troubling himself, and that a ruler should rule his people by his own example and treat them with love and concern.
A characteristic of Confucius's thought is his emphasis(强调) on education and study. He thought "A good teacher is someone who knows well the ways of the past and the practices of the ancients." and he also thought "He who learns but does not think is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger."
Confucius did not write down the principles of his philosophy; these were handed down only through his students. Lun Yu, a book compiled(编纂) by some of his students, is considered the most dependable source of information about his life and teachings. One of the historical works that he was said to have compiled and edited, The Spring and Autumn Annals, is describing Chinese history in the state of Lu from 722 BC to 481 BC.
Since Confucius's teachings and philosophy were so advanced, it influenced China for over 2,000 years. lt is called Confucianism.

The five are based in Adelaide, Australia, and met in 2010 when they sang together in a choir(合唱队) run by Tutti, an organization which supports disabled artists. Tutti saw they had talent and invited them to form a group. Now they perform together two or three times per month and this is how they make a living.
Michelle is 25 and has cerebral palsy(脑瘫) and a mild learning disability. She says, "We choose the name The Sisters of Invention because we are like sisters and we support each other on and off stage. For the invention part, we are trying to change people's view of people with disabilities. We are reinventing the rules.
All their songs are based on the members' own experiences and were written as a group in their twice weekly meetings at Tutti. "We would arrive in the morning and I'd say, 'What do you want to talk about today "' says their manager and producer Michael Ross. He then noted down everything they said until lyrics took shape. Ross says that putting "their truth" out there is important. He says, "What I'm interested in is that we get to see the world in a way that people in pop culture almost never get to see. lt is creative gold."
Daniel Anderson, a famous psychologist, believes it's important to distinguish television's influences on children from those of the family. We tend to blame TV, he says, for problems it doesn't really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children's minds.
One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child's ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images (影像). Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.
Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn't take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents' educational background have a stronger influence on a child's reading. "A child's reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads." Anderson says.
Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ (智商) scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it's the other way around. "If you're smart young, you'll watch less TV when you're older," Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.
For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
1.Which of these sentences best describes the writer's point in Paragraph 1
A.To some extent, intelligence is given at birth.

C.Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment.
D.Some people are born clever and others born stupid.

Seeing a volcano erupt is a wonderful experience, and you can really feel the heat by climbing to the summit(山顶) of Pacaya for a close-up view. There are guided tours every day up this highly active volcano from Antigua, giving travelers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most powerful.
Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua, a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its old streets that are turned into artworks during its Holy Week Festival. No matter when you come to Antigua, you won't miss the Pacaya-tour companies.
But climbing Pacaya is no easy job: it is 2,560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one-step-forward and two-step-back movements. As you climb, you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above. Steaming, hot remains from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit: the McKenney Cone(火山锥). Just as though you are going to walk over to the edge of the cone, the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, inactive summit.
Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava and the darkening sky. On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils, sending red lava over its sides, and once in a while shoots hot streams up to 100 metres into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the cone. As evening turns deeper into the night, the burning lava quietly falls down the side of the volcano. For you, too, it is time to get down.

Check out our tsunami(海啸) facts and learn some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction. Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some notable recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.

No one can believe that the over 6^300-kilometer Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called "great" mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.
The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. lt began in the rule of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty(221 BC-206 BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.
Few local people knew the 3-meter-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are parts of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human.
The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people's names are put away as remembrances. Rubbish is spread over the battlements. The brick can be sold 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. lt will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out the entire base.
It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation's great civilization and learn to love it.

In most developed countries the government provides free education for children because it realizes that educated citizens are useful to the country in their later life. Most countries also have private (私立的) education. This means that parents can pay to send their children to certain schools. People who agree with this system say that it gives parents a larger choice of schools. Other people think that private schools give the children who go to them an unfair advantage over other children.
At the age of three, many children go to a nursery school. Two or three years later, they enter a primary school. At the age of 11 they go to a secondary school. Then they may have a chance of continuing their studies at a university or college.
Universities and colleges are places where some young people go to continue their education after leaving school. Most university students study one main subject, though they may also study a number of others. Teaching is usually by lectures, or by discussions between a lecturer and students.
Most students stay at university for three or four years. At the end of that, they take an examination. If they pass, they will receive their bachelor's degree, usually a BA, which is short for Bachelor of Arts, or a BS for Bachelor of Science. Some students study for several more years in order to get higher degree, such as a MA or a PhD.
Most university courses don't train students to do a certain job. Colleges, on the other hand, usually teach skills which enable students to follow a career(职业), such as clothing design, or business studies.

want to do sth. 故填to reach。
a new kind of意为"一种新的 ……"。
8. As/While/When考査从属连词。 McDonald's is struggling... back"的从属连词可以是as/while/when。
