Last year, I was working on a book about penguins (企鹅), and I went on a trip to Antarctica. Antarctica is home to many penguins, so it’s a perfect place to take photographs of them. A boat was taking a group of scientists there on a research trip, and there was space for me. I’m not a good sailor, but it was the easiest way to get there.
The night before we left, I couldn’t sleep. What if there were storms while we were on the boat What if I got seasick I told myself that everything would be OK.
The day we left, the weather was beautiful. The ocean was peaceful, and the sky was blue. But it didn’t stay that way for long!
Later that day, a huge storm came. Rain poured down, and the waves were twelve metres high. Our boat was wildly tossed (使上下摇晃). I was very afraid, and then I got seasick.
By the third day, the storm was over. We were in the middle of the ocean, hundreds of kilometres from home. Thick mist hung in the air, and everything was white. It was a strange and lonely sight.
Then we hit pack ice (大块浮冰). The boat had to push its way through the ice. I told myself that the ice meant we were getting close to the penguins.
Our boat was too long to sail to the mainland, so we changed to the Zodiac. The Zodiac didn’t look very safe — it was the smallest boat I’d ever seen! But if I wanted to see those penguins, I didn’t have any choice …
There they were — thousands and thousands of penguins. They covered the beach as far as I could see. I took dozens of (几十) photos — some of the best I’ve ever taken.
Now the book has been published and I’m already planning my next one. I just need to think of an interesting animal that lives a little closer to home ...

The self-driving tour has become an excellent choice to celebrate festivals for the persons who are tired of the traditional way. We could see such kinds of tourists almost everywhere. They have a good time in cars.
In the past days, most people chose to go on a trip with a travel agency. It was convenient for tourists to enjoy the trip, because the travel agency had arranged (安排) everything for them, including booking hotels and plane tickets. There was a bus that can take them everywhere during the trip. But recently, people have discovered that they spend more time shopping than going sightseeing because of the travel agency’s arrangement. And they only visit a few scenic spots. So more and more people choose to have their self-driving tours. They can go where they like and stay longer in the scenic spots.
But you must pay more because you can’t book the cheap tickets or hotels by yourself. And there are many kinds of charges on the road, such as the charge of gas. There are also some disadvantages of the self-driving tour. If you meet some difficulties, you must deal with them by yourself. Besides, it’s better to have at least two drivers in a car who can drive in turn.
So if you have enough money and have a good car, choose the self-driving tour. If not, the traditional way is right for you.

Dear Zhang Rui,
Glad to learn that you are invited to a dinner party in Switzerland. Well, here are some tips you need to know.
It’s OK to arrive at the dinner party a bit late, but don’t be more than 30 minutes late. You can bring the host a small gift, such as chocolate and wine, but you’re not supposed to give anything sharp like knives or expensive gifts. And don’t put your hands in your pockets while talking to others. It’s polite to send flowers to your host either before the party or the next day, along with a thank-you note.
Hope you have a good time at the dinner party!
