It is reported that a student named Yu Ziwei from Taiwan University of Science and Technology completed his moneyless 9-day tour around Taiwan yesterday.
Inspired by a book “ Travel without money”, Yu determined to experience what it was like to travel without money. Before he made the tour, his parents and many of his classmates tried to persuade him to give up the crazy idea because they didn’t believe that he could make it. But being a stubborn person, he wouldn’t change his mind and insisted on making the tour. With only a little life-supporting necessities and proper equipment, he set his feet on the tour, with no money for fares or for anything else, no means of transportation of any kind. During the 9-day tour, he met with more difficulties than he could ever have imagined. Sometimes if he couldn’t meet someone to give him a lift, he had to walk and walk for a long time. He had to go hungry if he could not find someone to give him food. Now he was traveling under the burning sun and then in downpours. Faced with all the difficulties, the young man didn’t give in to them and bravely moved on. As he traveled, he introduced himself, the situation he was in and the purpose of his tour to the people he met if he saw fit. The people he met were kind-hearted and gave him whatever help he needed. They gave him food, drinking water, even shorts; they put him up for the night free of charge. Altogether, he got 28 lifts on the tour. Finally. After nine days of hard traveling, he returned to where he had started out. As he said to the newspaper reporters later, he would never have known that people were so friendly and the island was so beautiful if he had not made the tour and he was planning to cycle around the island the next year.
His moneyless 9-day tour changed people’s attitude towards travel to some degree and he also set a record of around-the-island tour because nobody had ever traveled around the island moneyless. It was a heated topic on the main streams of media in the island for some time.

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don't always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don't get along well, which doesn't mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away, then we feel very sad. We miss them much, but we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again, and we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.
There's more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people if those don't have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares, if someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

Can you remember the day when you spoke your first word? If you can, you are unusual. Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grow older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously. You began to know that people made certain sounds to go with certain things.
Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right sound for one thing.
On that day you came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things, can they understand each other. Then, and only then do these people have a LANGUAGE.
After you found the secret of language, you learned words. Some of the words meant things, such as BOOKS, CHAIRS and SHOES. Some words meant doing things, such as GO and SWIM. And other words describe things, such as GOOD and DIRTY. Soon you learned to put words together to express one's idea, such as "1 want to go out and play with my friends." This is language. By means of language people can communicate. So we say languages are means of communication.

Mrs. Brown began to think it over and then she said she wished her husband would be able to buy a nice umbrella for her, and so did their three daughters. As he was afraid he would forget it, he drew an umbrella on his hand. To his regret, he lost it at the station.

When you visit America, you will see the word Motel on signs and notice boards. It is made up of “motor” and “hotel” and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car (how-ever, you don’t need a car to stay at one). You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided, but there will certainly be a cafeteria (自助餐馆). Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than next. Some provide television in every bedroom; others have swimming pools; and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in the big National Parks.
In these great National Parks, you may meet guests you don’t expect to see. An American friend told me a little story. In the middle of a moonless night she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow. As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn’t a human thief — it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paw, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!
There are also, of course, places called “rooming houses”, where they receive lodgers (房客). You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning — looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!

A. You can only find motels in the big National Parks.
B. They are free for people who arrive by car.

62. Which of the following is NOT provided by motels?

64. The second paragraph mainly tells us ______.
A. an interesting story
B. the experience of the author’s friend

D. bears usually look for food at night
65. From the last paragraph, we can learn that in New York during the tourist season ______.
A. tourists can find gold there
B. tourists can have a sweet dream there

Stacey Hillman, who is 10 years old, was reading a magazine about police dogs needing bulletproof vests (防弹背心). She thought that someone should start raising money for the police dogs.
After she got permission from Chief LaBrusciano, she went to the County Sheriff Don Eslinger. She got busy visiting all the police dogs and telling the departments about her new charity. She made “collection boxes” out of bottles and put a picture of her with a police dog on it. She put these bottles in vet’s offices and petstores.
The Chief from her hometown police department helped make Stacey’s idea an official charity — Pennies to Protect Police Dogs. The more money she collected, the more popular she became, and the more people offered to donate and help her with her goal of giving every police dog effective protection.
Stacey travels all around her state to raise money and tell people how important the police dogs are. She speaks at schools, and they donate to her charity, too. Since Stacey started her charity, she has bought bullet- -proof vests for the police dogs with all the 140 thou-sand dollars she has raised. But she has many more K-9 friends that still need to be protected and she promises to keep doing her charity until every police dog in the whole country has a bulletproof vest.
Each vest costs $700, and every police dog de-serves (应该得到) one. There are not always tax dollars to provide K-9s with these vests, and very few departments have them. The police dogs save lives just like police officers do, and often the police dogs are the first to go in. Stacey relies on donations from everyone to provide the dogs with bulletproof vests.
66. What made Stacey begin to consider doing some-thing for the police dogs?

D. An article about police dogs’ problem.

You want to have fun and adventure and so you decide to travel somewhere to do it. Sounds like a simple enough thing. And basically it is. But what is ad-venture? That is the key here and the answer can be different for different people.
For those who love sports, adventure travel can have a whole different meaning than for those who like history. The physical travel types that you can find include such adventure travel as white water rafting (白浪漂流), kayaking or climbing and hiking to some mountains somewhere. To the hiker, backpacking across Ireland might be their adventure. For this type of person, adventure travel almost always includes some-thing physical. Often the goal is to push their body’s limits and test their individual endurance (耐力).
For those who less want to climb mountains, ad-venture travel might mean traveling to Nepal and taking in the local festivals. Wine tasting in Italy is also vacation adventure for the more relaxed traveler who enjoys peace and comfort. Anything that is opposite to the normal scope (范围) of the traveler’s lifestyle de-fines (定义) adventure.
Adventure travel is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all type of vacation. Adventure depends on the per-son’s physical limits, how much money the person has and what the person enjoys doing. Going beyond the normal is adventurous for many. If your life is quite busy, then sitting on a beach in the moonlight with your family might be adventure for you. The point is not what you do but that you have a good time and that it is an adventure for YOU — not for the person next to you.
Do not sit home this year when vacation time rolls around. Go beyond your normal routine and try some-thing new. If you usually spend your vacation sun-bathing on a beach, try hiking, instead, through the mountains. Look around you, think beyond your com-fort zone and head out on an adventure vacation.
71. For a quiet traveler, he is most likely to choose ______.
A. backpacking across a country
B. wine tasting in a bar
C. hiking to some mountains
D. white water rafting
72. To have an adventure travel, the most important is ______.
A. whether you enjoy yourself
B. whether you try something dangerous
C. where you go for the traveling
D. what you do in the traveling
73. The underlined word “beyond” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.
A. according to B. later than
C. more than D. less than
74. From the passage, we can make a conclusion that ______.
A. adventure travel always includes something dangerous
B. adventure travel will cost you a large sum of money
C. anything that goes beyond the normal is adventure travel
D. adventure travelers like to do things to the limits of their body
75. The best title for the passage may be “______”.
A. Tips on adventure travel
B. Who is interested in adventure travel
C. What is adventure travel
D. Popular places for adventure travel
