When I was a teenage girl, I went to Berlin, Germany for an exchange (交换) programme with my team members. One night we had some free time. Most of them decided to stay indoors and relax. But I did not want to miss the chance to tour Berlin.
I visited lots of places around the city that night. When I finally decided to go back, it was two o'clock in the morning!
As I walked to an underground station, I realised that it was my dad's birthday. This would be the first birthday I couldn't celebrate with him, because he had passed away a few months earlier. Before I could begin reminiscing (缅怀) about my dad, the train came.

She gave me a surprised look. But she agreed.
On the journey back, she and I talked. We shared our life stories and our hopes for the future. I even told her about my dad's passing. With a look of surprise, she told me that she had lost her dad a month before.

Kang Yu graduated (毕业) from Renmin University of China in Beijing in 2015. One month before graduation, Kang decided to teach at a middle school at Mangshui Township, in Yunnan's Baoshan City. Many of the students at the school were “left-behind” children, whose parents worked and lived in large cities. They were looked after by their grandparents. Kang found that her students needed a way to express (表达) their feelings. So she decided to teach the students how to write poems. The school held eight poetry (诗歌) classes for students every year, two every season. As the classes got more and more popular, Kang became the school's favourite teacher.
In 2017, Kang finished teaching at the school and returned to Beijing. On Teachers' Day that year, Kang received a gift — a big box full of poems and letters written by students at her old school.
One read, “I want to make a wish. I hope more children can find out who they are by writing poems, just like I did.”
Kang said, “It made me realise the importance of writing poems to the students. I cannot leave them.” So she gave up her plan to study abroad. Instead, she started Enlighten Our Future, a charity (慈善组织) that teaches students in the countryside how to write poems.
In less than two years, it has provided poetry classes for more than 50,000 students at 609 primary and middle schools in Yunnan, Shandong and Henan.

One day several years ago, Valorie Salimpoor took a drive that changed her life. Salimpoor, a neuroscience (神经科学) graduate, was having trouble deciding what she would do in the future. She felt that a drive might help clear her head. When she turned on the car radio, a piece of violin music came on. “Something just happened,” she remembers. “I just felt the happiness ... It was so strong.” She stopped the car so she could fully enjoy the music. She wondered why it had such a powerful influence on her.
Later Salimpoor found a job working as a neuroscientist. She did research on people's brain (大脑) activity as they listened to music. She discovered that when people listen to music they like, their brains produce dopamine (多巴胺) — a chemical (化学物质) connected with pleasure. In one experiment, people listened to some songs that they don't often hear. The listeners were then allowed to buy the songs they liked. Salimpoor was able to successfully predict (预测) which songs the people would choose to buy; she could tell what they liked and what they didn't according to their brain activity.
But why might one person like a song while another person doesn't Salimpoor says it all depends on past musical experiences. “Western, heavy metal, pop — all of these have different rules they follow,” she says. These rules are recorded as models in the brain. If the new music has a similar model, your brain produces dopamine and develops a feeling of pleasure. This might explain why most people have a preference for a certain kind of music.
Salimpoor's research has given her a new way to think about her experience years ago. “That day,” she says, “it all seemed like such a big secret.” Now when she hears a piece of music she likes, she has a better understanding of what's happening inside her brain.
1. Salimpoor felt very happy when she was listening to ____________ on the car radio.
2. Salimpoor did research on people's ____________ as they listened to music.
3. In an experiment Salimpoor ____________ in predicting which songs the listeners would choose to buy.
4. If a person hears a new song with a similar model, his brain will produce dopamine and develop ____________.
5. Salimpoor's research helped her ____________ in a new way.
