Does school prepare people for their jobs Here's what four people said.
When we study history, we learn about people, politics (政治), mistakes and great ideas in the past. All of these things help us to understand our place in the world and learn to think clearly.
—Sophia, lawyer (律师)
It depends on what kind of job you want. If you want to be a teacher, then school is the perfect preparation. If you want to be a chef (厨师), school is a great start, but then you need something more — you need to learn all about food. When I got my first job, my boss said it was the beginning of my education.
—Daniela, chef
When you play football, you learn about the sport — the rules, how to move the ball, etc., but you also learn about working with a team. In most jobs, you work with a team. Playing football at school gave me a lot of teamwork skills.
—Paul, manager
Not every subject at school is useful for your job. However, the school introduces you to a lot of ideas and subjects. It helps you learn what you like and don't like, and then you can decide on the right career. Until my maths teacher told me I could become an accountant (会计), I didn't know there was such a job.

I'm Jack. My father was a good watchmaker. He loved his work, but he was not a big moneymaker, and times were often hard. I remember once he was in trouble again. He had to pay a large bill, but he didn't have enough money. Then one day a well-dressed lady came into our shop and asked to see some very expensive watches. I stayed in the shop listening to them talk.
“This is a fine watch,” the lady said. “This is just what I've been looking for.”
I held my breath (屏住呼吸) as I saw the lady pull out lots of money from her bag! I was so excited. I imagined my father paying the bill and feeling completely relieved.

Louis Sachar is the writer of more than 20 children's books that are loved by children, parents and teachers. Sachar succeeds in writing funny, touching books for kids, but he didn't always know he wanted to be a writer.
Sachar spent time as a teacher's aide (助手) when he was in college. Although the work was not as easy as he thought, Sachar found that he really enjoyed working with young people. In fact, Hillside Primary School, where Sachar worked as an aide, finally became the inspiration (灵感) for his popular Wayside School books. The kids in the books are even named after students from Hillside.
After college Sachar attended law school and graduated (毕业) in 1980. By this time, Sachar's first children's book had come out, but he still wasn't sure about making a living as a writer. About ten years later, after writing several more books, Sachar finally felt that his books were successful enough for him to devote himself to (致力于) writing full time. In 1989, Sachar gave up his job as a lawyer and became a writer.
Sachar spends two hours writing each morning. He likes to be alone when he writes, though his two dogs, Tippy and Lucky, are always by his side. He tries to remember what it was like to be a child and uses those memories and feelings in his novels. He also uses his teaching experiences, as well as moments from his daughter's life. Sachar doesn't sit down with an organised (有组织的) plan when he starts a new book. Instead, he starts with just a seed of an idea. He finds that writing produces more ideas.

Being friends with someone does not mean that you agree with everything they do. Sometimes, you might disagree so strongly with the way a friend does things that you feel the need to mention it to him. You may find it so hard to talk to your friend. No worries. Here are some pieces of advice on how to make the talk friendly and effective (有效的).
Ask yourself what changes you expect. If you plan to tell your friend to change, you need to show examples of what you expect him to change first. This may be that a friend is dishonest, too lazy, or sometimes interferes with (干扰) your personal space.
Know why you want these changes. Are these changes for your own good, for your friend's well-being, or a necessary factor (因素) in continuing the friendship When you tell your friend that he has to change something about himself, he probably will ask why. You need to be ready to open up and give him the truth. For example, you can tell him how bad you feel now and what will happen if your friend makes a change.
Pick the right time and place to talk. You should have this talk in person if possible. Texts and emails are not the proper ways in this situation. Pick a time when neither of you is too nervous and meet somewhere that you won't be broken in. You might decide to meet for a Saturday morning coffee at a quiet local coffee house, for example.
Talk to your friend calmly. Try to communicate your feelings to your friend without blaming (责怪) him. When you talk, don't raise your voice at your friend. You might say something peacefully like “When you compare our grades, I'm not comfortable with it, and I want you to stop.”
1. It's common that sometimes you don't ________ __________ your friend and you expect him to change.
2. Before you go to your friend and tell him to change, you should list __________________ of what you expect him to change.
3. When your friend asks why you want him to change, give him __________________.
4. The writer advises talking __________________. He doesn't think texts and emails are good.
