Spirit of a Hero
In the fight against the severe SARS epidemic 19 years ago, Zhong Nanshan became a hero in the hearts of many Chinese people for his courage in assuming responsibility and solving the crisis once and for all. Today, this hero came to the fore once again in 2020 and continued to be in charge while people were defending themselves against the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP).
When the NCP broke out in late December, the National Health Commission called on a group of outstanding experts to investigate the novel coronavirus. As a leading Chinese respiratory (呼吸科的) expert, Zhong was appointed the head of the expert team to process the statistics and work out the intervention measures. Despite being 84, he took on the task without any hesitation and headed to Wuhan.
Due to the upcoming Spring Festival, Zhong failed to book any airline or high speed train tickets. Instead of being frustrated, he willingly settled for a temporary seat in the dining cab of an overnight train. Even so, he didn't take a rest that day and studied the information of infected patients.
Over the next two days, he maintained his busy schedule. Apart from numerous meetings, Zhong also worked as a messenger to inform the public of the situation because people were at a loss what to blame. While seeking effective measures to handle and control the disease's spread, Zhong also tried his best to stop the public's panic amid the NCP outbreak. His efforts turned out to be so successful that the tension steadily decreased.
When many couldn't get N95 face masks, which were believed to be the best to prevent the virus, Zhong wore a surgical mask (外科口罩) in an interview, which was a proof to show people that surgical masks can also work well. It shifted people's attitude towards the mask.
In 2003, Zhong became a trusted expert thanks to his devotion to truth in the fight against SARS. Many were calmed by his words and listened to his advice.
Still leading the fight against the novel coronavirus, Zhong maintained his role of telling the truth and reassuring the public. He transformed the negative thinking into a substantial strength to connect everyone. In that critical situation, besides morale (士气), solidarity (团结) and cooperation were very important.
As Zhong Nanshan put it, with help from across the country, Wuhan, a heroic city, pulled through.
