Born into poverty on 21 May 1799, Mary Anning had to work hard from a young age. Her parents had 10 children, of whom only two survived childhood --- Mary and her elder brother Joseph. Mary’s own survival was said by her parents to be a wonder. At the age of 15 months, a sudden rainstorm hit the shelter, where Mary, her babysitter, and two children stayed. A lightning strike killed them all except Mary.
She didn’t have formal education and was only taught to read at a Sunday school. Raised in the seaside holiday village of Lyme Regis in Dorset, Mary and Joseph made a living by selling fossils to holidaymakers at their father’s waterfront booth.
Her life changed in 1811 when Joseph noticed bones mixed together with rock. Unknown to them, this was the first ever discovery of an ichthyosaurus (鱼龙), a marine lizard from the Triassic period. Anning noted down every find she made, and after failing to find any new fossils for over a year, in 1821 she made her next discovery, digging up three more ichthyosaur skeletons. This was followed two years later by an even more impressive find --- a complete plesiosaur(蛇颈龙). This was so extraordinary that many leading scientists declared it a counterfeit, unwilling to believe that an uneducated 24-year-old could find such remarkable remains. Additionally, society at the time was highly religious and many rejected these discoveries as they conflicted with the teachings of the Bible.
Despite the setback, Anning continued to make more shocking revelations. Anning also dug up fossilized shit, which made experts know the diets of prehistoric creatures. But her biggest find of all was the first complete skeleton of a pterosaur in 1828.
All of Mary Anning’s discoveries helped influence the study of paleontology(古生物学) as scientists began to take an increased interest in fossilized animals and plants. Her work also encouraged people to question the history of the Earth in more detail and encouraged girls and those from poor backgrounds by proving that they could succeed in scientific study, a profession mainly controlled by wealthy upper-class men.
24.What can we learn about Mary Anning from the first two paragraphs
A.It was not easy for her to survive.
B.She didn’t experience the lightning strike.
C.She didn’t get basic knowledge about science.
D.It was impossible for her to find a job outside.
25.What does the underlined word “counterfeit” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Something not needed. B.Something not valuable.
C.Something not authentic. D.Something not beneficial.
26.Anning’s findings of fossilized shit helped ________.
A.her get international fame
B.make her become more professional
C.experts better understand prehistoric creatures
D.convince the leading scientists of her discovery
27.The last paragraph mainly wants to show ________.
A.the process of her findings
B.the significance of her discoveries
C.the discoveries of fossilized animals
D.the background of her scientific study
C
Like the move from horse-drawn carriages to vehicles powered by internal-combustion(内燃)engines, the change from cars powered by fossil fuels to electric vehicles (EVs) will have a profound effect on personal transport. The Epidemic worldwide caused a 20% drop in global light vehicle sales in 2020, to about 70m, but they pick up in 2021. And the proportion of vehicles powered by batteries will grow quickly.
The increasing share price of Tesla, provides a big motivation for newcomers to catch up. Tesla may lead in battery technology and software, but to make those advantages stick, it must prove that “production hell” is behind it. Scaling up manufacturing has caused Tesla its biggest headaches.
Big name carmakers face an equally discouraging challenge: Learning how to write software. Electric cars require integrated software(集成软件),not just to ensure that batteries and motors work together to provide the best performance, but to connect the car to the outside world.
And what of the Tesla followers, from China’s li, Nio and Xpeng to American firms such as Fisker, Lucid and Nikola Cash from excitable investors has poured in and it is the same with big name carmakers—as are tech giants, keen to get involved as transport goes digital. Can the followers persuade investors that they have patent technology that will give them a long-term advantage
Eye-catching Advertisements of vehicles are one thing, but as the industry’s trouble shows, working out how to make cars at scale, when softwares are as important as brakes and bodywork, is quite another. The coming year will make clearer which of Tesla’s competitors, new and old, can stay in race.
28. What is the trend of electric cars industry
A. Uncertain. B. Challenging.
C. Promising. D. Disappointing.
29. What is the biggest challenge Tesla faces now
A. Learning how to write the software.
B. Expanding its production capacity.
C. Connecting the car to the outside world.
D. Competing with many newcomers.
30. Which statement about Tesla’s competitors is TRUE
A. Their share prices are catching up with those of Tesla.
B. They are mostly established companies.
C. Their biggest problem is technical one like improving brakes and bodywork.
D. They are attracting investment.
31. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Battle Within the Electric-Vehicle Industry
B. Expanding Production Capacity—the Headache of Electric Cars Industry
C. New Companies Are Catching up in Electric-Vehicle Industry
D. Electric Cars—Your Future Choice
D
New Holland honeyeaters(食蜜雀) are experts at sounding the alarm when there's danger, according to new research from biologists at the Australian National University (ANU) and the University f Cambridge.
Study authors, Dr Jessica McLachlan and Professor Rob Magrath, found honeyeaters can spread the word in the blink of an eye, using a two-stage alarm. It's particularly effective when they are threatened by fast-moving birds of prey. “When a hawk(鹰) is swooping down, its target has only a fraction of a second to flee to cover----a split second can make the difference between life and death,"Dr McLachlan said.“But animals often signal urgent danger using repeated notes, which makes sure others hear the warning but it takes a long time to deliver.
“So there's a problem. How to send a lightning-fast message in a long call ” New Holland honeyeaters solve this problem elegantly. They “front-load” information about urgency into the first note of their alarm call, so other honeyeaters can respond quickly. The clever honeyeaters follow this up with more notes to intensify the message and signal how long to remain hidden. “They use a long call, with lots of notes,to make sure the message is heard,” Professor Magrath said. “And the more notes, the more urgent the danger. But they also modify the first note to indicate if it's necessary to take immediate cover. So it's a two-part message that is quick, reliable and informative.”
The technique is so effective that the authors expect to see other species adopt it.“Many other species modify alarm calls as the threat increases, but there is surprisingly little known about how fast they convey the message,”Professor Magrath said.
The researchers conducted their study in Canberra's Australian National Botanic Gardens over a period of several years. “These birds live in the Gardens and are used to having people around. This helped us to record natural interactions with their predators, such as sparrowhawks and currawongs(澳洲喜鹊),and to video the honeyeaters' responses to different alarm calls,” Professor Magrath said.
32.According to Dr Jessica McLachlan, _______
A. speed counts when it comes to honeyeaters' life or death
B. the second-part message in a honeyeater's call is more reliable
C. the message about where to take cover is conveyed very fast
D. the urgency degree relies on the first note in a honeyeater's call
33. What's particular regarding the way honeyeaters convey the message of danger
A. The frequently repeated notes.
B. The relatively fixed amount of the notes.
C. The flexible adjustment of the notes.
D. A long-time delivery of the notes.
34. What attitude do the researchers hold towards the honeyeaters
A. Objective. B.Critical.
C. Appreciative. D. Ambiguous.
35. The researchers' findings are mainly based on______ .
A. the comparison between honeyeaters and other birds in botanic gardens
B. the permanent account of the honeyeaters' response and signal transmission
C. the analysis of length of alarm calls made by honeyeaters
D. the constant and systematic observation of birds in botanic gardens and beyond

书面表达
Dear Michael,
I’m glad to have received your email. You asked me to share with you what I was doing in the epidemic situation. Let me tell you something at length.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Yinchuan in October 2021,I have stayed at home for almost a month. For one thing, I paid close attention to the epidemic situation through watching CCTV news or surfing the Internet; for another, I kept on studying from dawn till dusk. Not only did I read classics, but also I had online courses given by my teachers. Besides, I took exercise on a regular basis to keep healthy. Faced with the disaster, many people including doctors, nurses and scientists have acted bravely and spared no effort to fight against it. They are real heroes, from whom we should learn a great deal. It is they that have returned our life to normal, so we owe them gratitude and respect.
Thank you for your concern. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
