During the time of lockdown, a great way to manage boredom is to read. If you don’t want to buy books, I personally use Libby (or ) to connect to my public library’s entire e-book and audio book database. Here is my take on a well-rounded, diverse, and boredom-curing reading list:
SALT TO THE SEA by Ruta Sepytys
This is a young-adult historical fiction about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945. The story is from the point of view of four refugees (难民) from different countries, all keeping life-threatening secrets and struggling to escape to freedom.
AND THEN THERE WERE NONE by Agatha Christie
One of the best murder mysteries of all time. 10 strangers are invited to a remote island by a secret person and are murdered one-by-one mirroring a nursery rhyme. You absolutely won’t guess who the killer is.
EDUCATED by Tara Westover
Completely isolated from society, Westover spent her young life living in a remote mountainous area
where no one would ensure the children to receive an education. But Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her 金昌市 2021-2022 学年高三第一次联考试卷英语 第 1 页 共 10 页
quest for knowledge transformed her and ultimately ( 最 终) she was accepted to Harvard and Cambridge University. Her story of fulfilling transformation of life is inspiring and may be exactly what you’re looking for.
THE DIVINERS by Libba Bray
This is a young-adult fantasy that follows a group of teens with powers in 1920s New York City. When
Evie stays with her uncle, a string of murders occur. We follow each character as they find their powers and find out who’s killing people. The book’s a little long, but the twists, the 1920s slang, and the diverse and layered characters make it worthwhile.

B. It recommends ways to search online.
C. It helps to get free access to the public library.
D. It shares some writers’ personal book lists.

Now that my children are grown, I have resumed (中断后继续) a habit: solo (单独) travel. The seed was planted when I was 17 and went on a class trip to Spain. The experience was similar to reading my first book. I remember when I separated from the group and went through the busy streets ofMadrid on my own, looking at the architecture gawkingly, trying unfamiliar foods, and gathering the courage to engage the natives with my high school Spanish. After that adventure I sought every opportunity to explore on my own, because I wanted

to move according to my ideas.
I recall, many years ago, before I became a dad, arranging to work for a summer on an Icelandic farm in exchange for room and board. The driver stopped at the appointed place, but no one was there to meet me. And so I put my backpack down and read a book, knowing that when one travels one is never lost.
I tell this story to calm the fears of friends and others who have occasionally raised their hands to their faces upon hearing what I was up to. Some are specialists in outlining (概括) for me all the things that can go wrong when one launches oneself into the unknown. But for me, that’s the whole point of travel: to go where I haven’t gone before, to discover friendships waiting to be made, to interface (接触) with unfamiliar scents (气 味) and tastes, to enter a new and, for me, undiscovered environment where being pleasantly surprised is the reward.
A few years back I went to Greenland. I spent a week hiking its mountains, interacting with the natives, and sailing the bays. It was inspiring. I hopped ( 登上) my flight back to Iceland feeling well satisfied. But when I got off the plane and saw the line of passengers waiting for their flight to Greenland, all I wanted to do was turn around and join them. Once again it was proved for me that I would never get travel out of my system.
4. How did the class trip to Spain affect the writer
A. He became interested in learning Spanish.
C. He discovered the magic of solo travel.
B. He formed a habit of collecting plant seeds.
D. He realized the pleasure of reading books.
5. What does the underlined word “gawkingly” in the first paragraph most probably mean
A. Curiously. B. Anxiously. C. Casually. D. Randomly.
6. What does the travelling mean for the writer
A. Getting a reward from challenging fear.
C. Going in the unknown environment.
B. Exploring something new all the way.
D. Going wherever you would like to.
7. What did the writer’s trip to Greenland reflect
A. His impatient personality.
C. His crazy desire for travelling.
B. His quickness to follow others.
D. His tendency to be easily satisfied.

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei officially launched the 2.0 version of its self-developed operating system (OS) on Wednesday night, the HarmonyOS. The move paved the way for the Chinese firm to challenge Google’s and Apple’s role in current and future OS ecosystems.
Among the major strong points, the HarmonyOS, with a highly scalable ( 可扩展的) platform, can be applied to various devices, including smart phones, computers, and other electronic devices, the company said.
Analysts said the OS will do a lot to promote Huawei’s change into being a software service provider. Huawei’s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company was focusing on software because future development in the field was basically “out of US control and we will have greater independence and autonomy (自主权)” . Ren called on the company’s staffto “dare to lead the world” in software.
“The success of a software system will always have to rely on hardware (硬件), but nowadays, Huawei doesn’t have enough hardware to support its software ambitions — that’s the most difficult part,” said Jiang Junmu, chief writer at a news website. Once as the world’s largest smart phone maker, Huawei’s national smart phone market share (份额) has continued to drop in recent months. Liang Zhenpeng, an industry analyst, said that as an OS designed for the Internet of Things (IoT) era, the HarmonyOS may need more time and equipment to test than the OS for smart phones, and that will take at least two to three years.
Moreover, Liang noted that an ecosystem will always be the decisive factor for the success of an operating system. “Does the HarmonyOS have enough applications that can attract consumers to update to the OS That’s a question,” Liang said. So far, more than 300 application and service partners, 1000 hardware partners, and 500,000 developers have joined in the set-up of the Harmony ecosystem.
8. What advantage does the HarmonyOS have over other operating systems
A. It has different versions in different countries.
C. It provides users with a secure experience.
9. What can you infer from Ren Zhengfei’s words
A. Huawei’s change is challenging.
B. It works on a wide range of equipment.
D. It operates faster than Google system.
B. Huawei is seeking a new software service provider.
C. Huawei will break its dependence on the US.
D. The company’s staff need to improve their skills.

A. The difficulties in promoting the HarmonyOS.
C. Smartphone sales in the national market.
B. The success of developing the HarmonyOS.
D. The future software ambition ofHuawei.
11. What does Liang expect partners and developers to do
A. Create enough applications.
C. Cooperate with experts in various fields.
B. Update the original devices.
D. Build the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

Vaccines may soon make their first film appearance. Led by expert Maria A.Croyle, researchers have developed a thin sheet that preserves vaccines for long periods without refrigeration. This means the carefully cooled small bottles now used to ship vaccines could potentially be replaced by lightweight films that can be mailed in an envelope and stored on a shelf.
Croyle’s laboratory began developing the technology in 2007. Inspired by amber’s ( 琥 珀 ) ability to preserve the DNA of insects, the researchers set out to create their own version of the substance by mixing “a lot of sugar and a little bit of salt, much like hard candy,” Croyle explains. The vaccine-containing film is administered by mouth—sweet news for many who dislike needles.
The film is tailored to suit each specific vaccine candidate and provide a protective coating. “We’ve learned over time that the key to really stabilizing (稳定) whatever the film holds is to have it intermixed with all the components,” Croyle says, adding that the process is quick and uses affordable, standard equipment. “We really wanted to come up with something that would be transferable to developing countries.”
Immunization ( 免 疫 ) programs depend heavily on keeping vaccines cold (2 ℃ -8 ℃ ) as they are transported, sometimes over thousands of kilometers to far-away locations. Delivery can be difficult and costly, and transport disruptions (破坏) can cause the vaccines to be ineffective.
But this new product can store live viruses, bacteria and antibodies for several months at 20℃ . In a paper published in Science Advances, the scientists show that the live viruses in one vaccine were preserved in the film even after 36 months. They also find that a flu vaccine suspended (延期) in their film compares favorably with a traditional flu shot ( 流感预 防针). “The study demonstrates early proof of concept for an exciting platform for vaccine product development,” says Lisa Rohan, a pharmacologist, who was not involved in the
金昌市 2021-2022 学年高三第一次联考试卷英语 第 5 页 共 10 页
study. She also notes that each vaccine type would need a custom (定制 的) formulation (配方) for future stages of development.
Finding partners to mass-produce for clinical trials is the researchers’ most pressing problem, Croyle says. They are also exploring packaging methods to keep their films stable up to 40℃.
Size is a major advantage—a letter-sized sheet of the film can carry more than 500 doses (剂) of vaccine, about 1 900 the weight of the same amount of traditional doses. By making it easier and cheaper to ship and preserve vaccines efficiently, Croyle says, the technology could vastly improve immunization rates the world over, particularly in middle- to low- income countries.
12. What can we learn about the film
A. It contains animal’s DNA.
C. It can hold bio-products.
B. It will replace vaccines.
D.It comes in different flavours.
13. According to Paragraph 3, we can learn about the film’s ________.
A. possible advantages
C. key component
B. development schedule
D. transportation requirements
14. The author mentions Lisa Rohan’s words to
A. advise personalizing vaccines
C. prove the study is supported widely
B. stress the functions of a new platform
D. suggest the product is promising
15. What will be the next urgent task for Croyle’s team
A. Advertising the film worldwide.
C. Reducing the shipping cost.
B. Seeking ideal manufacturers.
D. Improving the film’s capacity.

Union is strength. Whenever you’re facing with difficulties or in a dilemma, cooperation plays an important part in getting you out of trouble. There was a time when I was too proud that I overlooked my classmate, refusing to work together with them. Therefore, it was no doubt that I was left alone, suffering from loneliness and failure. Unfortunately, a teacher impressed on me the value of cooperation. From then on, I learned to help others and turn to my friends for the help whenever I had difficulty finish a task on my own. Surely cooperation made a great difference. Now I am getting well with my friends. My experience has taught me that only if we attach great importance with cooperation can we go beyond ourselves.
