One night, a seriously injured patient was transferred to hospital in Nanjing, Jiangsu, from Anhui province. The patient was hearing-impaired, so it was difficult for medical workers to communicate with him.
At the same time, Chen Xin was studying at the library. He is a senior student of architectural engineering technology in Nanjing Polytechnic Institute. The 20-year-old is also a sign language interpreter. He immediately rushed to the hospital, which is next to his college, after receiving an urgent call. Chen helped the patient communicate with medical staff until the patient was released from the hospital.
“In many cases, some hearing-impaired people have to delay seeking medical treatment for various reasons, which brings health risks and property losses to the group," said Chen.
Chen knew some deaf friends, but they can only communicate with each other by typing on the mobile phone. This encouraged Chen to learn sign language. In 2018, Chen, then a senior high school student, attended a program by Nanjing Normal University of Special Education to learn from professionals and was certified (认证)as a sign language interpreter.
“Finger flexibility is a key,” Chen said, "I couldn’t make precisely harmonious movements of my fingers at first.^, So Chen took part in activities for deaf people to practice more.
Every kind of language has its own grammar system. So does sign language, “Its word order is different from Chinese or English/5 Chen said. For example, if you want to say "I love you", you need to sign "I you loveJ,. t(I spent a lot of time getting used to such differences/5 Chen said.
After mastering sign language, Chen built close relationships with hearing-impaired people and offered to help them. "Many of them turn to me when they go to see a doctor," Chen said.
Recalling another volunteer experience, Chen said he was very nervous at that time. t(We knew little about COVID-19 in February 2020.1 was wondering how to explain the virus," Chen said, “I was afraid of mistakenly translating the term."
After his graduation, Chen plans to be a professional sign language interpreter and offer services for more hearing-impaired people.
What inspired Chen to learn sign language
A medical emergency he suffered. B. A program related to sign language.
C. The support from some professionals. D. The way his deaf friends communicate.
What was a problem facing Chen after mastering sign language
He often confused the gestures of words.
He had trouble explaining some concepts.
He found it difficult to memorize the gestures.
He had to improve his finger flexibility.
Which of the following can best describe Chen
Creative and patient. B. Humorous and tough.
C. Warm-hearted and thoughtful. D. Talented and modest.
Which do you think is the best title of the passage
Lending helping hands B. Becoming an interpreter
C. Learning sign language D. Offering services to people

A few weeks ago, my 9-year-old daughter was sick. My husband was out of town. And I needed to head to the drugstore 一 a five-minute walk away 一 to get some medicine for her. So I made sure my daughter knew where to find our rarely used landline phone, quizzed her on my cellphone number and told her not to open the front door for anyone; then I left. Twenty minutes later I was back home. Both of us were a bit tense as this experience had never happened before, but we were fine.
I had been postponing this moment of independence for my daughter for months, held back by worry about the potential disasters. But I know that this way of thinking is part of a larger social problem that many people have complained of. Fewer children are walking to school on their own, riding their bicycles around neighborhoods or going on errands (差事)for their parents.
There have been several cases of parents actually being accused of allowing their children to walk or play unsupervised (无人监督 的).We're now seeing a backlash to all this pressure for parental supervision: Earlier this year, the state of Utah passed a new <(free-rangeJ, parenting law that redefined neglect to specifically not include things like letting a child play in a park or walk to a nearby store alone.
Overprotected parenting can do real harm. According to a study published this year in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, the number of children aged 6 to 17 whose parents said they were currently diagnosed with anxiety grew from 3.5% in 2007 to 4.1% in 2012. And in a 2017 survey of more than 31,000 college students by the American College Health Association, 21.6% reported that they had been diagnosed with or treated for anxiety problems during the previous year. That is up from 10.4% in a 2008 survey.

able to make scrambled eggs "with some gentle eyes on them," while most 10-year-olds can handle a chef's knife, she says. Parents first need to teach safe techniques, repeatedly, then assist with and monitor the activity before gradually t(fadmg out."
Why did the author and her daughter feel nervous
Because the drug store was a five-minute walk away from their house.
Because her daughter was too young to remember the phone number.
Because the author left her daughter home alone for the first time.
Because anyone could open the front door of their house.
What does t(a larger social problem" in Paragraph 2 refer to
Today's children have less independence.
Today's parents put too much pressure on children.
Fewer children participate in outdoor activities.
Fewer children help their parents do housework.
What does the underlined word "backlash" probably mean
Explanation. B. Support.
C. Opposition. D. Understanding.
Whafs Dr. Berry's suggestion to parents
When children cook, parents should be around them.
Children can be good helpers of their parents in housework.
For safety's sake, ifs best not to let children help in the kitchen.
It's never too early to start encouraging children's independence.

Human beings aren't the only animals that need sleep. Other mammals do too, and scientists have found that many animals, including even insects and worms 一 with no brain 一 regularly enter inactive states that look like sleep.
Neuroscientists have evidence that sleep plays a central role in the function of the brain. Sleep is involved in clearing metabolic (新陈代谢的)wastes from the brain, contributes to regulating the immune system, and is involved in the changes to the brain that happen during learning and the creation of memories. Thafs why the discovery that animals without brains sleep too came as a surprise to researchers.
In 2017 a group based in the United States reported that jellyfish regularly enter a sleep-like state of inactivity, from which it is hard to arouse them. In 2020 another team, from Japan, reported a similar discovery in related animals called hydra (水蝗).Hydra and jellyfish are both part of an animal group called cnidarians (刺细胞动物).
Cnidarians are simple animals whose bodies are controlled by a nerve network without a central brain. Though they lack a brain, the nerve cells of cnidarians are much like ours, and the hydra researchers found some important physiological similarities between hydra sleep and human sleep.
They showed that substances like melatonin (褪黑素),which promote sleep in humans, also do so in hydra. They also found that some of the genes involved in sleep regulation in humans perform similar jobs in hydra.
What this tells us is that sleep and probably some of its functions are important for all animals, even if they don't have a brain. The basic molecular (分子的)mechanisms for sleep probably evolved long before brains and centralized nervous systems.
What can we learn about the role sleep plays
The more you sleep, the better your brain will become.
Sleep is necessary for wastes from the brain to form.
Sleep can help the immune system to function well.
Sleep happens during learning and the creation of memories.
What surprised the researchers according to the text
Human and other mammals sleep.
Insects and worms sleep.
Jellyfish and hydra have brain.
Inactive status rarely happen to animals.
What are cnidarians mentioned to show
Animals without nerve cells can sleep too.
Animals without brain can sleep too.
Animals sleep the same way with humans.
Animals' brain differs from humans5.
Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Sleeping without a brain B. Sleeping in an inactive state
C. Sleeping in the sea D. Sleeping of great benefit

The New YearJs Surprise
At the age of fifteen, I became crazy about the idea of recording an album (专辑)for our parents for New Year, 1988. My sister Lucy, age six, my brother Allen, age eight and I would sing some of our favorite songs of the era. As you can imagine, this was an unusual task, especially for a child in those days, and our plan was to be kept a secret from our parents.
I was proud that, as an elder sister, it was I that was behind the scenes and everything was under my control. My sister and I always took time out while washing the dishes, so we could practise the songs we had listed to record without being noticed. Meanwhile, I found a local recording studio, not too far from where we lived. I rang and asked the cost of making a recording. Hearing the price, I was relieved because I had enough money to pay for it. In the past few months, I had saved the money earned from helping my grandma in the school holidays with her typing and printing business. For fear of being found out, we could not practice at home, so I persuaded my Aunt to allow us to practise at her house.
Later, I arranged for Aunt Mae to take us secretly to the studio at the appointed time. When we arrived, we waved her goodbye, because she had other things to do and she would pick us up in one hour. Everything went smoothly. The moment we entered the building, our hearts sank. It was an old building and while we were climbing the creaking stairs, it seemed to start an adventure. Hand in hand, we carefully stepped into a dimly lit room where there was an upright piano and microphone in one comer. A heavy silence blanketed the nearly dark room. Suddenly, we saw a figure standing in the shadows, which made Lucy burst into tears. Later, with the lights on, we realized he was the staff in the studio. He was sorry about the darkness of the room.

However, Lucy didn’t recover from the shock and was too nervous to record her best voice.
Seeing her pitiful face, I wiped her eyes and gathered her in my arms, patting her back gently.
Allen also approached closer to comfort her. Later, when she felt better, we surrounded the
microphone excitedly. Looking at their red faces, I knew that they were working hard. The man in
the studio was very patient with us and gave us a lot of useful tips. When the recording was
finished, I sighed with relief. After going downstairs, we were delighted to tell Aunt Mae that our
plan worked.
New Year’s Day came and we knocked on the door of our parents’ bedroom in excitement.
We eagerly gave our precious present to our parents. At the sight of the album, they were
surprised, smiling with big beaming eyes. We couldn’t wait to play our song. Our parents clapped
their hands to the music in delight. For us children, it was funny to hear our voices played through
the player, which made us giggle. Our parents were curious about how we made it. We proudly
told them the story, including the scary adventure in the darkness. Filled with love, they said that it
was the best present they had ever had.
