Local Take on Home Food
Food, glorious food! Eating local cuisine is an important part of any trip abroad. Sampling a country's delicacies can help you understand its culture, its exceptional customs and its people. However, when you are abroad for a prolonged (漫长的) period of time, it is understandable that you might start to miss the stuff that you have grown up with and that reminds you of home.
Currently I am living in Canada and I am very lucky because I can consume traditional food here, especially as some of it is similar to food in the UK. It consists of food such as baked beans, meat pie with onion, bacon, ham and fish and chips, which are all British staples (主食). Yet it can be somewhat different. For example, the fish and chips here are not as greasy (油腻的) as at home because olive oil is adopted. Of course, this is an ideal thing for my health, but not for my taste. Also, mushy (糊状的) peas and vinegar are not a main part of the elegantly cooked fish and chip supper in Quebec; once when I ordered the dish in a cafeteria, it even came with salad and rice.
Regardless of the differences, globalization means that large quantities of recipes have spread to other countries and associations are built in one form or another. The UK has a lot of Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants. Local people from these countries may not always think that the food cooked here is authentic (地道的) enough, but the meals are very popular all the same. Eager to experience diverse food cultures, I always can't wait to give it a try.
Of course, having stayed in Canada for so many years, there will be food I am going to miss when I return home, not least the delicious maple syrup (枫糖浆). I will make sure that I have enough room in my suitcase to pack a few large bottles of the country's tastiest treat prior to my departure.
