Famous Art Comes to China
While at an art exhibition, it's easy to feel lost in a sea of artwork that you don't know much about, people will feel more at ease in particular at the Pompidou exhibition (蓬皮杜现代艺术展) in Shanghai.
The Centre Pompidou in Paris is known as Europe's leading museum of modern art.Now 71 of its 120,000 works of fine art are being shown in the Shanghai Exhibition Centre, including masterpieces by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and French artist Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968).
But don't be overwhelmed by these influential names. To guarantee visitors can fully appreciate the art, the works of art are shown in a timeline from 1906 to 1977. And only one work of art is selected each year as a representative. This way, visitors can easily follow the history of art by following the exhibition.
The work of art for 1913, for example, is Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel. It is made up of only two objects—a bicycle wheel on top of a wooden stool (板凳). Strange though it may seem at first, it is considered a visual breakthrough because it made people think twice about the idea of what “art” is.
According to Duchamp himself, the reason he created Bicycle Wheel was simply because he wanted to convey his peaceful feeling while watching a bicycle wheel turning. “I enjoyed looking at it, just as I was fond of looking at the flames (火焰) dancing in a fireplace,” he said in an interview back in the 1960s. So even though it was not thought to be art at the time, Duchamp believed that it should be the artist who decided what art was, not the art world or the audience who criticised.
Another great piece shown in the exhibition is a 1958 picture of Coco Chanel taken by US photographer Richard Avedon (1923-2004). In the picture, the 75 year old French fashion queen is seen wearing pearl necklaces and earrings, as beautiful as ever, but in the centre of the frame is the loose skin on her neck. It's not just Chanel. Through Avedon's camera we can see many people with great reputation—no matter if it's US contemporary pop artist Andy Warhol, former US president John F. Kennedy or US actress Marilyn Monroe—in their everyday lives as normal people. Avedon never tried to hide the scars or wrinkles on their faces because he thought they were worthy of being recorded.
Avedon has an amazing talent of making the ordinary look beautiful in a strange way, which set his works apart from others.
