No matter where you live, giving gifts is a common way for us to express thanks, concern or love. Although the reasons for giving gifts are about the same around the world, the traditions of giving gifts can be quite different from one another.
In Europe, don’t accidentally cut yourself out of someone’s life.
In the US, a set of kitchen knives seems like the perfect gift idea for a wedding or holiday. However, in certain European countries like Germany, superstition (迷信) defines that a knife presented as a gift will end your friendship. There is a way to beat this superstition: tie a penny to the knife or gift box. The receiver then returns the penny to you as a “payment” to drive away the bad luck.
In Native America, your host gives gifts rather than receives them.
The Native American gift giving custom is exactly the opposite to that of any other culture. Traditionally, during weddings and some big celebrations (birthdays aren’t always included), guests are the receivers of gifts rather than the host.
In Japan, presentation is paramount.
The Japanese place great emphasis on the act of gift giving, and presentation plays a big role in determining how your gift is received. For example, it’s considered unpleasant to uncovered cash. So whether you’re sending money as a gift or just leaving a tip, place your money in an envelope to ensure it’s received in a respectful manner.
In China, red envelopes and even denominations (偶数的面额) bring good luck.
Chinese New Year has a rich set of traditions. One of the most popular customs of this holiday is giving out money in red envelopes. Known as yasuiqian, these gifts are meant to bring good luck. In addition to how you give money, there’s also superstition relating to the amount you give. Giving an odd numbered amount of money is considered bad luck. It’s important to make sure that even the first digit is even as numbers like 30 and 50 are considered odd.
11. Where will you probably receive a gift when attending a wedding
A. In Europe. B. In Native America.
C. In Japan. D. In China.
12. What can we know from “In Japan, presentation is paramount.”
A. It is impolite to give money as a gift in Japan.
B. How you give a gift is very important in Japan.
C. Presenting gifts is not a common activity in Japan.
D. The act of gift giving is more important than the gift itself.
13. Which of the following is acceptable
A. Giving a knife with a penny as a gift in Germany.
B. Receiving gifts from a Native American host at his birthday party.
C. Sending uncovered cash to a friend as a gift in Japan.
D. Giving three hundred yuan to a Chinese child during the New Year.

A man in Indonesia is walking backwards for 435 miles (700 kilometers). He’s making the trip to encourage the government and others to protect and rebuild Indonesia’s rainforests.
Medi Bastoni is 43 years old. He is the father of four children and lives in Dono, Indonesia, That’s about 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) from Mount Wilis, a beautiful mountain area that has had large areas of forests cut down in the past.
Indonesia is the largest country in the world formed by a group of islands. There are over 16, 000 islands in Indonesia, and most of them are covered with rainforests. Forests cover about 70% of the country. But on Java, where Mr Bastoni lives, there are more people, and far more forests have been cleared.
Some areas of Indonesia’s rainforests have been cut or burned. Mr Bastoni believes it’s important to protect- forests from being cut down and to restore them when they have been destroyed. Near his home, Mount Wilis is now being restored, but Mr Bastoni wants to make sure that this protection continues.
That’s why he came up with the idea of the 435-mile walk. He aims to walk from his home in Dono, across most of the island of Java to the country’s capital, Jakarta. There, he hopes to meet the country’s president, Joko Widodo.
Mr Bastoni hopes to arrive in Jakarta on August 17. It is the country’s independence day celebration. If he is able to meet Mr Widodo, he plans to ask him for the seed of a tree to plant at the bottom of Mount Wilis. The seed is meant as a symbol and a promise that the area will be protected.
And walking backwards is a symbol, too. Mr Bastoni wants Indonesians to look back at their past and think about how they got their independence.
But walking backwards is also a good way to get attention. Right now, Mr Bastoni’s backwards walk is pretty big news in Indonesia.
14. What’s Medi Bastoni’s purpose of making the 435-mile trip
A. To call on others to follow him.
B. To keep up the protection of forests.
C. To attract others’ attention and show himself.
D. To celebrate the country’s independence day.

16. Why does Medi Bastoni hope to meet the president
A. He is asked to plant a tree with the president.

Have you ever heard of the deepest hole in the world Of course it’s covered and shut, but it still sounds like a horror film to me. The entrance to the center of the earth sits among the ruins of an abandoned project site in Murmansk, Russia, not far from the Norwegian border. The deepest hole ever dug may be pretty unassuming, but I suspect I’m not alone in being a little freaked by it. An Internet search about the world’s deepest hole turns up the suggestion “Kola Superdeep Borehole screams”. No wonder locals call it the well to hell.
Before the very idea of a superdeep hole starts coming to your dreams, keep this in mind— the hole is only nine inches in diameter (that’s about 23 centimeters). There’s no way you could fall into it. Known as the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the deepest hole ever dug reaches approximately 7.5 miles below the earth’s surface (or 12 , 262 kilometers), a depth that took about 20 years to reach.
The hole was intended to go “as deep as possible”, which researches expected to be around 9 miles (that’s about 14,500 meters). But the scientists and engineers were forced to give up when they hit unexpectedly high temperatures. At 7.5 miles below the surface, the 2.7 billion-year-old rocks there reached temperatures of around 180 degrees Celsius. This was almost twice as hot as they’d predicted. Such high temperatures deform (使变形) the drill bits and pipes. The rocks themselves also become more malleable (可塑的). The Russian scientists in Kola described the rocks at those depths as behaving more like plastic than rock.
Since the drilling was stopped in 1992, and the project site was abandoned around a decade later, the Kola Superdeep Borehole has maintained the record for the deepest artificial point on earth. Humans have since dug longer boreholes, including the 12,289-meter borehole drilled in the Al Shaheen Oil Field in Qatar and the 12,345-meter offshore oil well near the Russian island of Sakhalin. But the hole in Kola remains the deepest.
18. Where is the deepest hole in the world

19. What does the underlined word “freaked” in the first paragraph refer to
A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Frightened. D. Amazed.
20. Why did scientists give up digging the hole at about 7.5 miles below the surface
A. The rocks there were too hard.
B. The temperature there was too high.
C. They lacked proper tools to keep digging.
D. They needed more money to keep working.
21. When did scientists probably begin digging the Kola Superdeep Borehole
A. In 1972. B. In 1982. C. In 1992. D. In 2002.

New research has provided surprising details about the biology of Earth’s largest fish— the whale shark. Scientists say that female whale sharks grow more slowly but reach a much larger size than males.
Researchers recently said they had followed the growth of 54 whale sharks over 10 years.
Whale sharks of both sexes were found to have their fastest growth while young— about 20 to 30 centimeters per year. Males were found to grow faster than females. They reached around eight meters in length at about 30 years old. At that age, they reached sexual maturity, meaning the fish are able to produce young. Females grew larger than males. Females reached about 14 meters at about age 50, when they reached sexual maturity.
Mark Meekan is a marine biologist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. He led the research that was published in Frontiers in Marine Science.
Meekan described whale sharks as “remarkable”. He noted that females give birth to many young: “Up to 300 at one time.” For this reason, Meekan said, female sharks probably need to be very large.
“Our study provides the first evidence that male and female whale sharks grow at different rates,”Meekan said.
Whale sharks are filter feeders (滤食者), meaning they take food and nutrients from the water. They swim great distances to find enough to eat. The longest- known whale shark ever recorded reached a length of about 18 meters. Whale sharks can live for 100 to 150 years.
Meekan suggested the study s findings were important for saving whale sharks. He noted that if it takes 30 or more years for the creatures to reach sexual maturity, there are lots of threats such as hunting and being hit by a ship before they get a chance to breed (繁育). For that reason, Meekan described efforts to save the creatures as “Urgent”.
22. What can we learn about female whale sharks from the research
A. They reach their ability to breed later than males.
B. They grow faster than males when they are young.
C. They can give birth to young at about 30 years old.
D. They can grow up to eight meters in length in their thirties,
23. Why are female whale sharks so big according to Meekan
A. They take in a lot of water from the ocean.
B. They grow fast and eat a lot of food each time.
C. They store plenty of food and nutrients in their bodies.
D. They have to be big to produce many young whales at one time.
24. What is the value of the study about whale sharks
A. It provides useful information for better protecting whale sharks.
B. It makes whale sharks reach sexual maturity faster than expected.
C. It helps scientists work out more ways to help whale sharks breed.
D. It helps to improve the marine environment where whale sharks live.
25. What can we infer according to the text
A. Male whale sharks grow more slowly but reach a much larger size than females.
B. Whale sharks take food and nutrients from the surrounding waters where they live.
C. Female whale sharks live longer than male whale sharks.
D. The growth rates of male and female whale sharks are different.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Kids’ birthday parties are wonderfully fun for all, but in the way that they are traditionally celebrated, they are the enemy of “zero waste living”. A kid’s birthday party can produce lots of waste, from the plates, cups, and uneaten food, to the gift wrap, present boxes, and disposable (一次性的) decorations.
It doesn’t have to be like that, though, as it is possible to hold a birthday party without waste. Here are some ideas on how to cut down on unnecessary waste and have a fun celebration.
Invitations
Forget the themed paper invitations; they get thrown away almost immediately anyway. 26 The mobile phone is a common communication tool which enables your guests to receive the invitation at any time.
Decorations
27 Stay away from them altogether, including balloons. If you must decorate, choose some reusable, classic decorations that can be pulled out every single year, such as colored lights. Make your own painted and personalized banner, paper hats, and so on. Keep them for the next year.
Food
Don’t overdo the food preparation. 28 So you should put out only what is necessary, rather than ending up with loads of leftovers that are potentially ruined by the kids. Keep the rest for other meals. If other parents bring food, ask them to bring it in reusable containers.
Gifts
The gift giving part of a birthday party can produce a lot of unappealing trash, which is why you should choose an alternative. My kids have gone to several “toonie parties (a toonie is a two-dollar coin in Canada), where each guest gives two dollars in their card and that money can be used by the birthday child to buy a single toy. 29
In my years of parenting, I’ve realized that kids mostly just want to play together. 30 In other words, you don’t need to worry about it not feeling like a birthday. Furthermore, it will be a new and improved version that doesn’t include massive bags of trash at the end of the day.
A. However, most parents find it hard to hold a “clean” party.
B. Decorations can usually make the party room more attractive.
C. Try using a basic email or phone call to create your guest list.
D. Decorations for kids’ birthday parties are almost always disposable.
E. They will create a party feeling without much assistance from parents.
F. Kids hardly eat anything at birthday parties because they’re so excited.
G. It’s a great idea for reducing waste and making a child’s birthday wishes come true.
