While markets suffered recession, a number of groups enjoyed record growth. Here we list some of the top
100 company winners in a bad year.
1.Xiaomi Corporation
Sector: Technology HQ: Beijing, China
Huawei’s horrible year has been a windfall (意外之财) for China’s other big smartphone makers. With
Washington’s Huawei sanctions (制裁) forcing Android users to turn to Xiaomi’s devices, it has risen above Apple
to take third place in global smartphone market share. Its stock was added to Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index and it
crossed the $100bn market cap mark last month.

strict rules in discounts, and an antitrust investigation into its chief competitor Alibaba also helped.
3.Meituan

From my first day, I was attending press conferences and other media events all over town. I got to attend
events at places I had never thought I’d get to: the White House, the Senate and House of Representative buildings
at the Capitol, the Department of Health and Human Services, just to name a few. And I was sent to cover these
events as if I were a reporter, not just an intern(实习生).
In fact, I never really felt like an intern. I was given the opportunity to do the work that everyone else at the
paper was doing. I covered stories on my own and wrote the articles myself. I was included in discussions for story
ideas. I helped to edit the articles that went into the paper. I was able to take part in every aspect of the newspaper
that I wanted to experience.
The best part of working at the Nation’s Health was the staff. They were supportive in letting me to out and
do things on my own, while I always knew that they would be more than happy to answer any questions or help
me with any problems I might have. Best of all, they treated me as their equal, not just an intern whom they could
get to do all the work they didn’t want to do.
After interning at the Nation’s Health for nearly seven months and having more than 30 articles published, I
had to move on. My experience gave me insight into how the media work, which helps me when I’m trying to
choose stories. In addition, it showed me that work really can be fun.
34.What is the passage mainly about
A.How good reporting begins with journalism interns.
B.The author’s opportunity to work at the Nation’s Health.
C.The author’s experience working as an intern.
D.The author’s first day as a professional reporter.
35.What impressed the author most when working at the Nation’s Health
A.The employees treated her as one of them equally.
B.The opportunity to work alone.
C.Covering stories and writing articles.
D.Coming up with story ideas for the newspaper.
36.From the passage we can infer that the author had thought an intern would be made to _________.
A.go to as many places as possible
B.do the boring things that others didn’t want to do
C.treat people equally, no matter who they were
D.get help from a professional reporter

37.What did the author think of her experience of working at the Nation’s Health
A.Meaningful. B.Disappointing. C.Tiring. D.Surprising.

Thousands of encouraging roadside signs have been planted around the world, and it’s all thanks to one
woman who felt helpless in the face of mental illness.
Amy Wolff was first encouraged to start planting the encouraging signs after she had a heartbreaking
discussion with a friend in May 2017. “We were hanging out with friends when one of them mentioned the
growing number of people trying to kill themselves in our community,” says Wolff. “I wasn’t a doctor. I didn’t
know of anyone suffering from thoughts of self-harm. What could I do ”
Then Wolff got the idea to start planting encouraging signs in people’s yards. For the following two weeks,
she and her kids started knocking on people’s doors across their town of Newburg, Oregon and asking if they could
put up signs with messages like “Don’t Give Up” and “Your Mistakes Don’t Define You”.
Wolff then started receiving messages from other people in the community wanting to buy the signs. Within a
few days, Wolff had sold over 150 of the yard signs. That night, Wolff’s husband created a website to sell the
signs.
“Within a year, we had news media in Dallas, Boston, Massachusetts, and Portland cover our movement,” she
added. By the fall of 2018, Wolff set up the Don’t Give Up organization for her signs. Since she planted her first
sign two years ago, she has shipped the organizations messages of encouragement to all 50 US states and 26
countries in 6 languages.
With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, the messages that Wolff has received from sign owners are
meaningful. One message from Frank reads: “I just had a woman knock on my door. She began to cry and thank
me for the signs in my yard. Her son had tried to kill himself and these signs were in the yard the day they came
home from the hospital.”
38.What led to Amy Wolff taking action to help people with mental illness
A.Her friends suggestions.
B.The things done by “Don’t Give Up”.
C.Her own experience of fighting against mental illness.
D.The increasing self-killing events in her community.
39.Why have thousands of encouraging roadside signs been planted across their town of Newburg,Oregon
A.To sell the signs to other people in the community well.
B.To help the people trying to kill themselves in Wolff’s community.
C.To offer the helpless people with mental illness courage and confidence in life .
D.To make a website to sell the signs meaningful.
40.Which of the following best describes Wolff
A.Honest and hard-working. B.Creative and warm-hearted.
C.Humorous and easy-going. D.Cheerful and strong-minded.
41.What can we learn from Wolff’s story
A.To save oneself is to save others. B.Many hands make light work.
C.Make selfless devotion and seek no rewards. D.It pays to try new things.
D
The worldwide 20th century “Green Revolution”, which saw huge year-by-year increases in global grain
试卷第 4页,共 8页
yields (产量),was fueled by the development in the 1960s of new high-yielding dwarfed (矮小的)varieties known
as Green Revolution Varieties (GRVs).
These dwarfed GRVs are common all over the world in today’s wheat and rice crops. Because they are
dwarfed, with short stems, GRVs devote relatively more resources than tall plants to the growth of grains rather
than stems, and are less likely to suffer yield losses from wind and rain damage. However, the growth of GRVs
requires farmers to use large amounts of nitrogen fertilizers (氮肥)in their fields. These fertilizers are costly to
farmers and cause extensive damage to the natural environment. The development of new GRVs combining high
yields with reduced fertilizer requirements is thus a global agricultural goal.
Researchers at the University of Oxford and the Chinese Academy of Science have discovered for the first
time a gene that can help reach the paring 36 different dwarfed rice varieties, the researchers identified a
novel natural gene that helps increase the rate at which plants make use of nitrogen from the soil. This gene, called
GRF4, can increase the amount of a protein(蛋白质)in plant cells. GRF4 is actually a promoter that encourages
the activity of other genes—genes that promote nitrogen uptake(摄入). Professor Harberd said, “Increasing GRF4
levels could contribute to an increase in the grain yields of GRVs, especially at low fertilizer input levels.”
The researchers say the latest rice variety containing GRVs should now become a major target for farmers in
increasing crop yields and fertilizer use efficiency, with the aim of achieving the global grain yield increases
necessary to feed a growing world population at a reduced environmental cost. It is very urgent at the moment.
Professor Harberd added, “This study is an example of how studying fundamental science objectives can lead
rapidly to potential solutions to global challenges. It shows how the discovery can enable chances for food security
and future new green revolutions.”
42.What can we know about dwarfed GRVs
A.They have higher yield and taller stems. B.They are a “double-edged sword”.
C.They are environmentally friendly. D.They can be easily affected by weather.
43.What can GRF4 directly do
A.It promotes other genes' activity. B.It increases the output of crops.
C.It takes in nitrogen from the soil. D.It lowers fertilizer input levels.
44.What does “the goal” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Increasing the rate of nitrogen use. B.Producing cheaper nitrogen fertilizers.
C.Using fewer fertilizers to produce more grains. D.Finding a gene to solve agricultural problems.
45.What’s the main idea of the text
A.GRVs—a potential measure to achieve global food security.
B.The influence of agricultural development on the environment.
C.The importance of raising public awareness of global issues.
D.GRF4—foundation for new green revolutions.

“You know,” she said, “If you 62 you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I make enough it’ll be gone!”
“There might be 63 way,” she said.
And our paying plan 64 . My mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some hiding place
I couldn’t find. Each week I 65 counted my growing saving increased by extra work here and there. And
then, weeks later, I counted, re-counted and jumped for joy. Oh, happy day! I 66 it! I finally had the exact
