Step I Warm-up
1. Greetings.
2. Lead-in
Show a guitar and ask, “What’s this ”. The students answer, “It’s a guitar.” Then the teacher continues to ask, “Can you play the guitar ”. The students answer YES or NO.
T: Can you sing Can you swim?Now let’s listen to a song and sing together.
Play the video. Lead in the new lesson.
Step II Presentation
T: Well, Let’s look at some pictures and get to know what they can do. Lead out the new words and phrases one by one.

Next read them aloud.
Then ask the students to work in pairs to practice:

B: Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
T: In China , there are many kinds of clubs in the school. What are they Show the pictures and learn the new words.

Step III Practice and consolidation
Teach 1a.
T: Just now we learned some new words and phrases. Now look at the picture in 1a.What can the people do Match the activities with them. Then check the answers.
Answers: 1.e 2.g 3.d 4.b 5.c 6.a 7.f
Step IV Listening
Teach 1b.
T: Now, we’ll hear three conversations .In the conversations ,students
are talking about their abilities and joining clubs. You need to listen carefully and number the conversations.
Play the recording twice. Ask some of the students to show their answers. The others say if they have different answers. Later, check the right answers.
2. Play the recording once more for the students to repeat .Ask the students to pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation.
Step V Pair work
Teach 1c.
Ask the students to make up their own conversations.
A: What club do you want to join
B: I want to join the …club.
A: Can you …
B: Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
A: OK. Welcome to our… club!
Then ask some pairs to act their conversations.
Step VI Listening
Teach 2a and 2b.
Play the recording for the first time and ask the students to circle the clubs they hear. Then check the answers.
Play the recording twice for the students to complete the sentences in 2b. Invite several students to check the answers with the whole class.
Step VII Pair work
Divide the students into pairs, ask them to work in pairs to talk about what clubs Lisa, Bob and Mary like to join. They can take the example conversation as a model.
S1: What club does Lisa want to join
S2: She wants to join the chess club.
S1: Can she play chess
S2: No, she can’t.
Give them several minutes to do it.
As they work , move around the classroom checking the progress.
Finally invite several pairs to act their conversations.
Step VIII Exercises
Do some exercises to consolidate the language points.

Step IX Summary
In this period, we’ve mainly learned how to talk about abilities and the clubs we like to join through some listening and speaking practice. And we’ve also learned the General Questions about the modal verb “can” and the short answers.

Write about what club you want to join and why.
