Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer and pilot who used his life experiences to write his publications. The Little Prince is one of his most famous books, selling about 140 million copies worldwide, which makes it one of the best-selling and most translated books ever published. Born in Lyon, France in 1900, Saint-Exupéry’s family was filled with nobility. His father was a manager of an insurance company who died when Saint-Exupéry was very young.
In 1915 Saint-Exupéry joined a high school in Switzerland. Due to his poor performance in class, Saint-Exupéry didn’t graduate from the boarding school in 1917. Saint-Exupéry twice tried to apply to the French Navy Cadet School. However, both times he failed the entry test. Finally, he went to a local college to study architecture. Again, due to poor grades, he didn’t complete his study.
In 1921, Snint-Exupéry decided to join the French army as a soldier. He trained as a pilot and made his first solo(单独的)flight in July of that year. The next year, after he obtained his licence, he was asked to transfer to the air force. However, his fiancee(未婚委)and her family believed that joining the air force means meeting lots of risks. In that case, they were against his staying in the military. Finally, Saint-Exupéry gave in to them and left the military. Later he took an office job in Paris.
As he had difficulty setting on a career path, Saint-Exupéry began to fly as a pilot again in 1926. It turned out that he was a successful pilot and made great contributions to his country during World War Ⅱ. Saint-Exupéry’s last light was on 31 July, 1944. He left on a wartime mission over occupied France, from which he was never seen again.
Saint-Exupéry was honoured by the Trench in France and the French region of Quebec Canada. His portraits appeared on the 50-franc notes and 100-franc coins before the introduction of the euro in France. In Lyon, his birthplace, the city’s international airport was named after him.

On November 18, 2020, state workers who were tracking sheep were flying over the Utah desert in a helicopter. They noticed an object that is called monolith later, and landed nearby to see what it was. It was a shiny, three-sided metal column about 3.7 meters tall and planted solidly in the middle of the desert.
Bret Hutchings, who flew the helicopter, said, “I have to admit, that's been about the strangest thing that I've come across out there in all the years of flying.” The shape of the monolith and its strange appearance in the desert have reminded people of a black monolith in the science fiction movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. In that movie, the monolith was also unexplained, but it appeared to have been created by creatures from another world.
Some people say that the monolith appears to be similar to artwork created by some well-known artists. But one of the possible artists died in 2011. Two others have said that the work is not theirs.
Still, people working for the government believe that the monolith was most likely put there as an art project. But they note that it was quite a difficult task. The monolith is in a hard-to-reach spot somewhere in the 93,000 square kilometers of Utah land managed by the US Bureau of Land Management(BLM). Delivering the column that seems valuable to that location in the traditional way would have required moving very heavy materials. They must have thought of other ways.
One metal statue in the desert may not cause too many problems for the sheep, but what if lots of people decide to visit the site That's one reason the BLM hasn't released where it is. The BLM is also afraid that the monolith might encourage other artists to plant other similar artworks in the desert. That's something that the department doesn't want to happen. Anyway, the government still hasn't decided whether to remove the monolith or let it remain.
8. Why did the author mention the science fiction movie
A. To explain the film was imaginary. B. To show the monolith is strange.
C. To make the text more interesting. D. To prove what Bret said was true.
9. What do we know about the monolith according to the text
A. It was created by aliens from another planet.
B. Some artists made it by copying an art project in a Sci-Fi movie.
C. BLM transported the heavy materials to the desert in a traditional way.
D. It remains puzzling how the monolith was made and transported to the desert.
10. What has the BLM decided to do with the monolith
A. Keep its location secret. B. Get it removed at once.
C. Preserve it as an artwork. D. Make it a tourist attraction.
11. Which one can be the best title of the text
A. Metal Column Planted in the Ground
B. Man-made Column Drawing Attention
C. Unusual Monolith Found in the Desert
D. Monolith Presenting Strange Appearance
D
Nowadays, there's lots of advice on how to give praise and positive comments to others, but few suggestions on how to receive the flattering (承) messages. Accepting praise can make many people feel like a fish out of water because even when we are proud of our achievements, we don't want to appear proud. This is exactly how 1 felt at my dad's birthday party.
Just a few days before, I received my university results; my parents were so proud of me. On arrival, every guest already knew my grades. As the party went on, dozens of people greeted me with warm, heartfelt congratulations. I was surrounded by so much unexpected praise! Concerned about stealing my dad's spotlight, I tried to tum the kind attention away from myself and mention the background. I joked that the professor must have been in a very good mood when she marked my paper, and that I was just "lucky".
Few of us wish to appear vain (自负的). We may worry that our honor will cause envy (如忌) from others. In the workplace, there's fear that praise might bring extra work and higher expectations. Now that your boss has seen you are a go-getter, they're going to pile on the pressure!
Looking back, the praise I received from the guests at the party was heartfelt. My degree hadn't helped them in any way so there was no duty for them to comment, but they still cared enough to say “well done". Instead of ignoring the praise, I should comment on how kind they were for noticing, or how pleased I was with my achievements.
Another good choice is to "forward" praise—perhaps other people played a part in your success and deserve to share the attention. If you're still lost for words, a simple "thank you" is the best way to go. So, the next time you get the praise you deserve, don't hide your pride and try to enjoy the moment.
12. How do many people feel when accepting praise
A. Uneasy B. Confused
C. Confident D. Ashamed
13. What was the author's reaction to the unexpected praise at the party
A. She ignored the remarks. B. She owed it to the professor.
C. She sincerely thanked the guests D. She felt proud of her achievements.
14. What does the underlined word "go-getter" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. A proud person. B. A worried person.
C. An able person. D. A green-eyed person
15. What might be the author's purpose of writing the text
A. To warm people to keep honest. B. To share one of her big moments.
C. To show the importance of praise. D. To encourage people to enjoy praise.

I'm crazy about running. Sometimes the pain of running can have a magic influence on a runner. Throughout any given race, you are suffering. Your lungs feel like they're being squeezed (挤压) by something unseen. But it is in this pain that a great runner is created.
My first cross-country coach told me that every race is run with patience and determination. I've carried this advice with me for hundreds of miles. I especially remember the 5 miles of running in one race, where his words encouraged me a lot.
That day the weather was perfect. I and dozens of runners gathered at the starting line to do some last-minute preparations for the running. Then, we lined up and got ready to start. There was a brief moment before the gun gave a signal of running. In that moment of great stress, I determined to push myself to run as fast as possible, hoping to make my coach proud, who was waiting for me at the finish line. When the sound of "Bang" came up, we were off.
Running between runners, I managed to work my way up in the first 400 meters and passed many racers on my sides. But out of good sportsmanship, we each said a "good job" or "keep up" to every person we passed. Although we were competitors, running was a connection we all shared.
The first mile passed quickly in a feeling of excitement. It was not challenging in the beginning of the running. But I knew it would be harder and harder in the following miles. I made full use of the running skills that my coach had taught me. I checked that I was doing everything right, breathing in through my nose, keeping my hands relaxed and pumping (快速摆动) my arms. However, the shadow of tiredness danced before me. Anyway I tried to push it out of my mind.
With time going by, the competition became fiercer. Every runner tried their best to run in order to gain a good place in the race. Audience along the track shouted and cheered us.

In 1915, Saint-Exupéry joined a high school in Switzerland.
Saint-Exupéry was honoured by the Trench in France and the French region of Quebec, Canada.

B Man-made Column Drawing Attention
C. Unusual Monolith Found in the Desert
D. Monolith Presenting Strange Appearance
B 9. D 10. A 11. C

A 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据文章第二段“I joked that the professor must have been in a very good mood when she marked my paper, and that I was just ‘lucky’.”(我开玩笑说教授给我打分的时候心情一定很好,我只是‘走运’。)
根据文章第三段“praise might bring extra work and higher expectations.”(表扬可能会带来额外的工作和更高的期望。)

故填when。
in the morning在早晨,为固定搭配。 故填in。

故填including。
“It's the first time that…” 故填have stepped。

be+形容词+enough to do “足够地……做某事”。故填to inspire。

Possible version:
Eventually I reached the final mile. It was then that I felt extremely tired and sweat fell down my face. Many runners in the race had fallen behind, but I refused to be one of them. Instead, I chose to pump my legs a little faster and push myself a little harder. As the last half mile was near, the number of people along the track increased. Around the next corner, I could see my coach waving to me in great excitement. I tried to run faster.
Unfortunately, I suddenly fell down. I felt great pain and discouraged. Just at that moment, the audience shouted, "Come on, girl!” "Watch out!” "Keep up!” Meanwhile, a runner behind me came to me and gave me a lift. I was really grateful and encouraged. I stood up and ran for the final 400 meters. When I finally sailed over the finish line, I nearly cried with relief. I won the third place in the race. My coach was proud of me and I felt great too.
