Ready for a new challenge There’s nothing quite like reaching the top of a really tall mountain. Below are some mountains waiting for climbers to touch their icy faces, whether beginners or the experienced.
Mont Blanc: 15,781 feet
Though the climb to its top is not a piece of cake, a guided trip up will be achievable by most climbers with proper fitness. Make sure to plan ahead of time as recent rules have been made to limit overcrowding on the mountain.
What to bring: A backpack of equipment such as trekking shoes, and ropes.
Pico de Orizaba: 18,491 feet
Although climbing Pico de Orizaba is relatively simple, a guide is highly recommended as well as plenty of time to take over its top. Stay at the tent, wake up in the early morning and then make your way up this North America’s third-highest peak. Once you get there, the views are worth the effort.
What to bring: A week or two’s acclimatization (服水土) training.
Mount Rainier: 14,410 feet
Mount Rainier is such an famous mountain that it even has its own National Park. Though it is at the lowest height of the four, this active volcano throws more challenges than the other three. So a guide is required to reach the top. But with all the necessary preparation, the climb is never short of wonderful views.
What to bring: A portable (便携的) stove to turn snow into your drinking water.
Mount Kilimanjaro: 19,341 feet
Mount Kilimanjaro can be hiked without setting foot on ice or snow. A guide is required and it will take you up to a week to reach the top, but you will feel proud to say you have climbed Africa’s highest peak.
What to bring: To reach Kilimanjaro, you’re probably going to need to break the bank. And the money goes to the experienced guides and Kilimanjaro National Park to protect the mountain and wildlife.
1. Which mountain controls the number of its visitors
A. Mont Blanc. B. Pico de Orizaba.
C. Mount Rainier. D. Mount Kilimanjaro.
2. What is a climber advised to do before climbing Pico de Orizaba

B. Have a acclimatization training for some time.
C. Take a portable stove in order to drink water.

Several years ago, I went to see an advanced cartoon 3D movie Frankenweenie at the Walt Disney Studios, in California. A few days later, our chief editor gave me a new task and then I sat down for interviews with the film’ s director, Tim Burton, and some of the actors.
As for the movie, I had a lot to talk about as an audience. It was one of the most alluring movies I’d ever seen. Even though it was made in black and white, it was so lively that my mind seemed to fill in color in every scene (场景). Burton talked to me about why he chose to use black and white and 3D technology for Frankenweenie. “I like the depth and shadows (阴影) that you can get with black and white,” he said. “And I just thought the 3D technology would be really fun to see.”
He’s right. The whole movie is a lot of fun. A school student Victor Frankenstein lives in a small town, whose dog Sparky is hit by a car one day. Victor is very sad and lonely until he brings the dog back to life inspired by an experiment of his science teacher about the power of electricity. Victor’s classmates learn what happens and also try to bring their pets back from the dead. These creatures end up with causing widespread damage throughout the town. Finally, the dog gives up its own life to save Victor.
My favorite part is the moment when Victor brings Sparky back to life, because I have a very strong love for animals. This scene isn’t the funniest, but it is really heart-warming to me.
I’d like to recommend this movie to kids because of the unusual and lively characters. And it does attract those who are interested in cartoon techniques to see this film. The effects will blow your mind out of the water. Be sure to check out this exciting movie in theaters.

The Mackenzie River is the second largest river in North America after the Mississippi River and is the largest river system in Canada. It runs from southeast to northwest, from Great Slave Lake into the Arctic Ocean. The break-up of ice begins in late April, early May. The river is free of ice by early June and stays open until November. After flowing past Norman Wells, the river then continues to channels full of wild grasses, until its path is divided by plenty of islands, making the Mackenzie River Delta (三角洲) in Arctic Ocean.
The Mackenzie River Delta is the shape of a vast fan of low-lying islands. The delta is covered with black spruce (云杉), which is a type of tree that is large enough to be used for building and is widely used for cooking food or warming.
The Mackenzie River Delta, with many islands and wet land, provides a perfect environment for birds. Birds, including snow geese and swans, visit the river and delta every year and spend the summer months in the delta. In the spring, the delta is also a breeding (繁殖) ground for fish and whales. 44 species of fish are found in the river, many of which move in groups among the Mackenzie River and its branches (分支). Those which move from the sea to fresh water in order to lay eggs travel some of the farthest distances. The fish in Arctic Ocean, for example, travels from the delta up the Mackenzie River and into the Liard River.
However, climate changes and pollutants become the greatest concerns to the health of plants, animals, fish in and along the Mackenzie River and people there. Dangerous results from climate changes are already found along the Mackenzie River, including unusual floods and thinner ice roads. There are concerns that waste from oil and gas will pollute local environments. Levels of pollutants in fish, an important food source for local people, have greatly increased since the mid-1980s.
8. What do we know about the Mackenzie River
A. It begins in the Arctic Ocean.
B. It is larger than Mississippi River.
C. It is the second largest river in Canada.
D. It stays free of ice for about half a year. .
9. Why does the Arctic fish travel to the Liard River
A. To look for more food. B. To avoid being killed.
C. To give birth to its young. D. To search for their groups.
10. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The fish in the Mackenzie River is less than before.
B. The ice of the Mackenzie River is thinner and thinner.
C. The Mackenzie River is facing environmental problems.
D. The Mackenzie River causes more floods to local people.
11. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear
A. Environment. B. Culture.
C. Education. D. Technology.

A study from the Netherlands found that people, who took a cold shower, were less likely to ask for leave from work because of sickness than those who took a warm shower.
Over 3,000 people was divided into four groups. The first group were asked to have a warm shower every day. And the second group were asked to end it with 30 seconds of cold water, the third with 60 seconds of cold water, the fourth with 90 seconds of cold water. After a three-month follow-up period, they found that the groups that had cold shower had a 29 percent drop of self-reported sick leave from work.
The reason why cold water might stop people from getting ill is not clear, but some research suggests it may have something to do with improving the immune (免疫的) system. A study from Czechia showed that when athletic young men were asked to take cold shower three times a week for six weeks, it gave a slight improvement to their immune system. However, more studies are needed to prove these findings.
Cold water has also been shown to improve the movement of our blood. When we are taking a cold shower, there is less blood flow to the skin. When the cold water stops, the body has to warm itself up. And then there is an increase in blood flow to the surface of the skin, improving the movement of our blood.
There is also some evidence that a cold shower can help you lose weight. A study found that cold water at 14℃ increased metabolism (新陈代谢) by 350 percent. Metabolism is the process by which your body changes what you eat and drink into energy, so a higher metabolism nearly equals more energy burned.
A cold shower may also help you feel less stressed and get you less likely to feel down. Because of the high density (密度) of cold receptors in the skin, a cold shower sends a large amount of electrical waves from the the brain, which may help people get out of stress and stay positive. While cold shower may do good to our health, we should still be careful to try it.
12. How did the researchers get the conclusion of the study
A. By watching videos. B. By surveying volunteers.
C. By studying documents. D. By making comparison.
13. What effect does cold shower have on us
A. Cold showers stop us from getting stressed and unhappy.
B. Taking cold shower 3 times a week can greatly improve our immune system.
C. Cold showers help us increase the movement of our blood.
D. Cold showers decide if the food we eat can turn into energy.
14. Who may need cold showers according to the text
A. A scientist who studies metabolism.
B. A person who always feels down.
C. A student who wants to become cleverer.
D A lady who plans to put on her weight.
15. What might be the most suitable title for the text
A. Cold Showers Do Harm To Our Health
B. Cold Showers Can Treat Diseases
C. Cold Showers Have Health Benefits
D. Cold Showers Help Us Lose Weight
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. C

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last week, I watched an old couple when they walked through a local thrift (节俭) store. I had just dropped off a bag of clothes and a few other items I no longer wanted. When I got the opportunity, I stopped by just to look through the old records. Yes, I called them records, not CDs or MP3s, simply records, those round plastic things from ancient times that had music recorded on them.
Anyway, this couple moved slowly around me in search of items they had on a list they held tight in hand. They didn’t say much, but occasionally talked with the other and picked an item up. “No, it’s not suitable for her and she dislikes it,’’ one would say and move on.
My curiosity always got the best of me until I satisfied it by asking. “Can I help you find something ” I asked. They stopped, looking at me. Then the man said, “We are looking for old things that look new. Look, every new year in the past we tried to begin the year with new things. It was a goal to surround ourselves with things fresh and new so that we had new direction, new hopes and dreams for the year ahead. More importantly, we can give some gifts to Eva.”
“Eva Who is she ” I asked. “She is a lovely 10-year-old girl we adopted three years ago. Her parents died in a serious traffic accident. She always wants to be a singer,” the man replied. When hearing those words, I felt sad and said, “I’m sorry for the girl. Can you tell me how does your search work out ” The lady sighed and said, “It took a long time for us to find a special gift, but we discovered it was in vain (徒劳的).”
I knew it’s difficult for the couple to solve the problem, so I decided to take action immediately. I said to the couplet can do you a favor. Please wait here for me.

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

When I returned to the store, the couple sat near the counter (柜台).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I turned around and ran out of the store. I knew I should go home to find something to help the couple. Then, I took a taxi. On the way home, I was thinking what I could give the girl as a gift. For me, the only hobby was music. So I thought I could give something about music as a gift, maybe a record. After arriving home, I found an old record which was given by my grandparents when I was ten years old. I believed Eva would love it.
When I returned to the store, the couple sat near the counter (柜台). Seeing me, they waved to me. I ran to them with the record in my hand. The man was surprised and asked me where I had gone. I gave them the record and told them, “This is a gift from my grandparents, and now it belongs to Eva.” The couple felt happy and showed their appreciation to me. Although the record meant a lot to me, I knew it would light up the girl’s sky. I felt proud of what I had done.

Although climbing Pico de Orizaba is relatively simple a guide is highly recommended as well as plenty of time to take over its top. Stay at the tent, wake up in the early morning and then make your way up this North America’s third-highest peak. Once you get there, the views are worth the effort.

D. It stays free of ice for about half a year. .

B. Culture.
