Joey Hudicka began his entrepreneurial (企业家的) journey by creating a strategy game called Puckz when he was just 10 years old, by combining two of his favorite interests – strategy games like checkers, and sports like ice hockey. Seeing the amazing experiences unfold for her big brother, Heidi Hudicka set out to create her own first business, a fashion clothing line for her 18 dolls.
But one day, Joey and Heidi met after school and experienced a real breakthrough. “I was telling Joey I was asking friends if they would like me to outsource(外包给)the sewing of my designs to them, since it is not really my favorite part of that business, but none of my friends understood what I meant by outsourcing,” recalls Heidi.
“When Heidi told me what happened after school that day I was like, ‘Yeah! I have the same problem.’ Most kids just don’t understand when we talk about our business, or even why it is important to understand how businesses work,” says Joey. “And that’s when we decided to do something about it, to create a fun and engaging way to teach more kids about the power of their creativity through innovation and entrepreneurship.”
Joey and Heidi, along with their parents, founded Fizzee Labs, and began creating engaging learning resources such as Outta This World, a board game that activate your imagination by applying it to invent amazing new products or experiences, in a fast-paced, competitive format.
“Outta This World is a journey through the depths of outer space. You have brought very limited supplies with you on your mission, and you must creatively repurpose these supplies, transforming them into brand-new products or experiences that can be sold to the different civilizations you will meet along your journey, raising the funds you need to reach your destination!” describes Joey.

Recently, many climate change campaigns and organizations have marketed themselves using images of polar bears losing their habitat. This has led many people to view the polar bear as the global icon(象征物)for our climate crisis.
The polar bear has become so widespread because it does an excellent job of playing on an audience's emotions and convincing them that there is an urgent problem on Earth. The imagery of a polar bear is also much more attractive than a scientific graph(图表)or chart of increasing sea levels or extreme weather event occurrences.
However, using polar bears as the only icon of our changing climate is flawed(有错的).For one,it only represents one effect of climate change, global warming, and not climate change itself. It neglects to address other aspects such as extreme weather events, ocean acidification, etc. While global warming is an important impact of climate change, the other aspects need to be communicated as well since climate change may not even cause warming in certain parts of the world—it could lead to severe snowstorms or colder winters instead. Thus, communicating these other elements is vital because it can reduce much of the misinformation surrounding our climate and gives the audience a more comprehensive understanding of our planet.
Moreover, using polar bears is problematic because most people do not live anywhere near polar bear habitat. This makes polar bears feel far removed from our own personal reality-thus making climate change feel far removed from our lives. Since climate change is anything but a distant phenomenon, a symbol that communicates the ways in which the climate crisis affects humans could be more convincing and push more people to act.
Even though using the polar bear as the icon of climate change is limited in conveying the full scope of our climate crisis, it can act as an agent of opening up the conversation about environmental issues and inspiring viewers to dive deeper into learning about climate change.
8. Why are polar bears preferred as marketing images
A. Their imagery is more convincing.
B. They are likely to lose their habitats.
C. They are unique victims of the climate crisis.
D. The data on them often appear in scientific graphs.
9. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. Polar bears are the only indicator of climate change.
B. Climate change is bound to result in global warming.
C. All elements of climate change have been communicated to the public.
D. Using polar bears as the only icon of climate change will cause some problems.
10 What does the underlined word"This"refer to in Paragraph 4
A. Failing to understand our planet.
B. Refusing to take immediate action.
C. Living apart from polar bear habitat.
D. Using polar bears to explain climate change.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The occurrence of climate change
B. The possible impact of climate change
C. The dangerous symbol of polar bears
D. The importance of protecting polar bears
A 9. D 10. C 11. C
根据第二段最后一句“The imagery of a polar bear is also much more attractive than a scientific graph(图表)or chart of increasing sea levels or extreme weather event occurrences.( 北极熊的形象也比海平面上升或极端天气事件发生的科学图表或统计图更有吸引力。)” 故选A。
根据第三段的首句“However, using polar bears as the only icon of our changing climate is flawed(有错的)( 然而,用北极熊作为气候变化的唯一标志是有缺陷的).”
划线词是指示代词,指代前文的内容,前文是“Moreover, using polar bears is problematic because most people do not live anywhere near polar bear habitat.( 此外,使用北极熊也是有问题的,因为大多数人都不住在北极熊栖息地附近。)”
根据文章最后一段“Even though using the polar bear as the icon of climate change is limited in conveying the full scope of our climate crisis, it can act as an agent of opening up the conversation about environmental issues and inspiring viewers to dive deeper into learning about climate change.( 虽然用北极熊作为气候变化的标志,在传达我们的气候危机的全面范围上是有限的,但它可以作为一个媒介,能够开启关于环境问题的对话,并激励观众深入了解气候变化。)” C .The dangerous symbol of polar bears(北极熊的危险气候象征)概括较为全面。故选C。
D
Aspirin was discovered in 1897, and an explanation of how it works followed in 1995. That, in turn, has encouraged some research leads on making better pain relievers through something other than trial and error. This kind of discovery—answers first, explanations later—is called "intellectual debt". We gain understanding of what works without knowing why it works. We can put that understanding to use immediately, and then tell ourselves we'll figure out the details later. Sometimes we pay off the debt quickly; sometimes, as with aspirin, it takes a century; and sometimes we never pay it off at all.
In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly(and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.
It's the difference between knowing your car has faulty brakes and not knowing: both are bad, but if you know there is a problem with your brakes, you can increase your following distance, drive slowly and get to a mechanic as soon as possible. If you don't know, you' re likely to find out the hard way, at 80mph on the highway when the car in front of you comes to a sudden stop and your brakes give out.
We don't have much by way of solutions. Most important, we shouldn't trick ourselves into thinking that machine learning alone is all that matters. Indeed, without life value, machine learning may not be meaningful answers at all.
12. What is the purpose of mentioning aspirin in the first paragraph
A. To present the research process of aspirin.
B. To introduce a similar situation machine learning faces.
C. To show the difficulty in explaining how aspirin works.
D. To prove we can use something even when we don't understand.
13. What does the underlined word "wary" probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Anxious. D. Watchful.
14. How does the writer prove that it's potentially worse if a system performs perfectly
A. By telling a story. B. By giving a definition.
C. By doing an experiment. D. By making comparison.
15. Which of the following statements is the writer likely to agree with
A. It's OK as long as a system works well. B. It's impossible to pay off Intellectual debt.
C. It's unwise to rely blindly on machine learning. D. It makes no sense to pay attention to life value.
B 13. D 14. D 15. C
根据第一段“Aspirin was discovered in 1897, and an explanation of how it works followed in 1995. Sometimes we pay off the debt quickly; sometimes, as with aspirin, it takes a century; and sometimes we never pay it off at all.(阿司匹林于1897年被发现,在1995年对其工作原理进行了解释。反过来,这又鼓励了一些研究,通过除了试验和错误以外的其他东西来制造更好的止痛药。这种发现先回答,后解释。被称为“智力债务”。我们了解了什么有效,而不知道它为什么有效。我们可以立即使用这种理解,然后告诉自己,我们稍后会弄清楚细节。有时我们很快还清债务。有时,就像阿司匹林一样,需要一个世纪。有时我们根本没有还清。)”可知,文章第一段通过阿司匹林的故事提出“智力债务”的概念。第二段“In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly(and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.(在智能时代,虽然机器学习带来了很多问题,并且犯了错误,但至少我们知道对系统产生的预测足够警惕,并认为它们不应该被盲目遵循:但是如果一个系统表现完美(并且我们不知道为什么),那么我们就会依赖它,忘记它,并在出错时承担后果。)”
根据第二段“In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly(and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.(在智能时代,虽然机器学习带来了很多问题,并且犯了错误,但至少我们知道对系统产生的预测保持wary ,并认为它们不应该被盲目遵循:但是如果一个系统表现完美(并且我们不知道为什么),那么我们就会依赖它,忘记它,并在出错时承担后果。)”中的“and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed”可知,人们知道不能盲目遵循机器系统,要保持警惕。
根据第三段“It's the difference between knowing your car has faulty brakes and not knowing: both are bad, but if you know there is a problem with your brakes, you can increase your following distance, drive slowly and get to a mechanic as soon as possible. If you don't know, you' re likely to find out the hard way, at 80mph on the highway when the car in front of you comes to a sudden stop and your brakes give out.(这是知道你的车刹车有问题和不知道之间的区别:两者都不好,但如果你知道你的刹车有问题,你可以增加你的跟随距离,慢慢开车,并尽快找到机械师。如果你不知道,你很可能会发现一条艰难的道路,在高速公路上以80英里每小时的速度行驶,当你前面的车突然停下来,你的刹车失灵。)”可知,作者通过对知道汽车刹车有问题和不知道刹车有问题两个例子的比较。依赖汽车系统,不知道刹车失灵,可能会导致更糟的结果。作者通过比较论证了如果一个系统表现完美,情况可能会更糟。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“We don't have much by way of solutions. Most important, we shouldn't trick ourselves into thinking that machine learning alone is all that matters. Indeed, without life value, machine learning may not be meaningful answers at all.(我们没有太多的解决方案。最重要的是,我们不应该自欺欺人,让自己认为机器学习本身才是最重要的。事实上,没有生命的价值,机器学习可能根本就不是有意义的答案。)”可知,作者认为机器学习本身没有生命价值,并不重要,所以盲目依靠机器学习是不明智的。故选C项。

【答案】16. B 17. C 18. F 19. E 20. D
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章认为写作可以改善心理健康,并说明了原因。
【16题详解】
根据前文“Something as simple as taking a walk or eating a piece of chocolate can brighten your mood almost instantly, thanks to certain chemical reactions that occur in the brain.”(由于大脑中发生的某些化学反应,像散步或吃一块巧克力这样简单的事情几乎可以立刻让你的心情变好。)可知,选项B中的“These pleasures”是指像散步或吃一块巧克力这样简单的事情带来的快乐,根据后文“If you're going through something complex, you need a more permanent practice.”(如果你正在经历一些复杂的事情,你需要一个更持久的练习。)
根据前文“it's worth learning about the ways that you can use writing to support your mental well-being.”(学习如何用写作来支持你的精神健康是值得的。)可知,此处提到写作可以支持你的精神健康,对应选项C中的“There's real power behind the pen”(笔的背后有真正的力量),根据后文“Use writing for mindfulness.”(用写作来保持专注。),“Another benefit to writing is its ability to clear your mind of worries, negative thoughts, or sources of pain.”(写作的另一个好处是它能够清除你的担忧,消极的想法,或痛苦的来源。)
根据前文“Mindfulness is a tried-and-true technique for improving mental wellness, but can writing have the same effect ”(正念是一种久经考验的改善心理健康的方法,但写作也能有同样的效果吗?)可知,此处提问写作是否能改善心理健康,所以空格处应是对这个问题的回答,根据后文“By focusing on a particular moment and getting it all out there on the page, you can free yourself from any of the other concerns that are crowding your mind. This way, you can use writing as an approach to mindfulness and as a way of relieving stress.”(把注意力集中在某个特定的时刻,把所有的事情都写在纸上,你就可以把自己从那些挤满你头脑的其他事情中解放出来。 可知,回答是肯定的,所以选项F(事实上,每天写作20分钟就可以起到作用了。)
根据前文“Another benefit to writing is its ability to clear your mind of worries, negative thoughts, or sources of pain.”(写作的另一个好处是它能够清除你的担忧,消极的想法,或痛苦的来源。)可知,此处是提到清除消极的想法,根据后文“Fortunately, writing can speed up the process of restoring mental clarity.”(幸运的是,写作可以加速恢复头脑清晰的过程。)
根据后文“People were more likely to talk to others about a painful event after writing about it privately, which powerfully suggests that writing can indirectly lead to reaching out for support, which can mean even greater healing and relief.”(人们在私下把一件痛苦的事情写下来后,更愿意和别人谈论这件事,这有力地表明,写作可以间接地导致寻求支持,这意味着更大的治愈和解脱。)

An Exciting Tug-of-war
The afternoon of last Friday witnessed a grand event in our school playground——an exciting Tug-of-war which turned out to be a great success.
As soon as the referee blew the whistle, both teams started pulling the rope into their territory. At first, they were both matched within the first 40 seconds with all their might, which let all ardent supporters hold their breath. Then came the decisive moment when 10 warriors from different classes made a dead pull to defeat their opponents. The playground boiled with thunderous cheers.
The activity was so rewarding and fruitful that it not only enriched students’ extracurricular life, but also cultivated our team spirit and perseverance.

A Terrifying Experience
It was an unusually hot day. Exhausted after football practice, I headed to the bus stop to wait for Bus 112 which would take me home. I was beginning to drift off to sleep when I saw the bus arriving. The sun was in my eyes and that was probably the reason why I got onto Bus 113.
I was glad to get a seat. Within minutes I was leaning against the window, fast asleep. When I opened my eyes, it was dark outside. I was the only passenger left on the bus. I could not recognize the part of town we were passing through. I pressed the bell and the bus stopped. I planned to hop across the road and catch a bus going in the opposite direction. However, I found myself on a quiet street with a row of shops that were all closed. I kicked myself for not asking the driver for directions.
As I was wondering what to do, a motorcycle came down the road. The rider looked at me as he passed and then stopped a short distance away. I went to him and asked him how to get back to Taman Klang Utama. He smiled and nodded. He patted the back seat and said that he would send me home. Without a second thought, I climbed up behind the rider. He turned the motorcycle around and headed in the direction I wanted. We traveled for about 15 minutes and the surroundings still looked unfamiliar to me. The rider made a few turns and I knew I was hopelessly lost. I asked him where we were going. He did not answer but increased his speed.

One possible version
Alarm bells started to ring in my head. I tapped the man on the shoulder and told him to stop. He leaned forward and went at high speed now. Then he slowed down to turn into a dark and narrow road. I had had enough. I jumped off the vehicle and fell onto the ground. The man turned around and rode towards me. I swung my school bag at him and he lost his balance and fell off his motorcycle. Without looking back, I just ran and ran until I found that I was on a properly tarred road. Cars were passing by. I was relieved to get into a taxi. I was shaking uncontrollably.
When my family learned what had happened, they were horrified. My mother's face paled. My father told me that I should have just looked for a public phone and called home when I was lost. Looking back on the terrible scene, I felt shivers down my spine. I knew I had been foolish. It was a frightening experience that I hoped would never happen to me again. It's better to be safe than sorry!

A. Her parents’ inspiration. B. Her passion for a fashion clothing.
C. Her brother’s game business. D. Her friends’ ignorance of business.
5. Who is Fizzee Labs intended for
A. The students who want to play board games.
B. The kids who want to sell engaging products.
C. The children who want to invent amazing products.
D. The pupils who want to learn about the power of creativity.
6 What do we know about Outta This World

B They are likely to lose their habitats.
10. What does the underlined word"This"refer to in Paragraph 4
A. Failing to understand our planet.
B. Refusing to take immediate action.
C. Living apart from polar bear habitat.
D. Using polar bears to explain climate change.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The occurrence of climate change

D. The importance of protecting polar bears

Within minutes, I was leaning against the window, fast asleep.
