After all the waiting, I finally received my first vaccine against COVID-19 in mid-April. So what did I do I turned up the music and danced - with abandon, with joy and with relief. What is a 66-year-old woman doing dancing by herself This is what I have been doing my entire life.
There was no real structure to my dancing: no lessons, competitions or prizes. As an only child, I spent hours dancing alone, when not reading on my bed. I would turn up the Telefunken console that my dad had brought back from Germany and played and replayed my favorite songs .
At Chatelard School, my strict British all-girls boarding school in the Swiss mountains, we teenagers threw off our uniforms and danced our little hearts out, barefoot in our nighties. Being against every rule, I was then sent to stare at a spot in the dark hallway, shivering in the same white nightie.
I have danced in moments of joy, but also of stress and anxiety. For me, it is a ritual. For me, dance is a release, a liberation, a joy, self-medication, and self-expression. For me, dance is always about losing myself in a feeling of liberation.
I look back on the role that Zumba played in helping me through sad times. It gave me the strength and courage to leave a marriage. When my father was dying of cancer, I cried through the classes, barely able to follow the instructor. During those last few years in my job, I turned up my Zumba activity that prepared me for those final days before early retirement.
But there was also joy: My Jimmy Choos danced with me at my daughter’s wedding. I danced to live music with my partner Ted at his birthday party, and there was that New Year’s Eve in Paris, where we danced on the tables.
4. What do we know about the author
A. She developed a love for dancing in childhood.
B. She won first place in dancing in high school.
C. She started to take dance lessons at Chatelard School.
D. She decided to quit dancing after the vaccination.
5. What does the underlined word “ritual” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Boredom B. Ceremony C. Escape D. Burden
6. Why is Zumba mentioned in paragraph 5
A It was the author’s favorite type of dance. B. It gave the author comfort after retirement.
C. It remined the author of her late father. D. It encouraged the author to face difficulties.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article
A. To recall her golden teenage years in school. B. To describe the benefits of dancing.
C. To express her passion for dancing. D. To introduce the joy and tears dance brought her.
A 5. B 6. D 7. C

“Best space tacos(玉米卷饼) yet,” American astronaut Megan McArthur wrote on social media Twitter on Oct 30, with a photo of her smiling from ear to ear. The taco feast celebrated the first time peppers were successfully grown on the International Space Station.
Life as an astronaut is exciting, but that doesn’t include food. Astronauts have endured packaged food for decades. “If you store packaged food for a long duration, the quality, flavor and nutritional quality decrease, the vitamins degrade,” Gioia Massa of NASA Kennedy Space Center in the US told The Guardian. Growing food in space could be crucial for astronauts on long-duration missions.
“Growing colorful vegetables in space can have long-term benefits for physical and psychological health,” said Mat Romeyn, project scientist at NASA, in a statement. The benefits of growing vegetables in space are obvious, but how are they grown
Though astronauts have been growing plants in space for decades , cultivating edible(可食用的) food without the benefits of gravity and natural light has been difficult . A plant growth system called Veggie has been used to grow plants on the space station since 2014, according to The New York Times.
The Veggie garden is about the size of a piece of luggage and typically holds six plants. Each plant grows in a “pillow” filled with clay and fertilizer. The “pillows” are important for distributing water, nutrients and air in a healthy balance around the roots.
In the absence of gravity, plants use other environmental factors, such as light, to guide growth. LEDs above the plants produce a light suited for the plants’ growth. According to NASA, Veggie typically glows pink, which enables plants to use both blue and red wavelengths more efficiently. Other spectrums(光谱) of light, like greens, yellows or oranges, are less useful for plants.
So far, US astronauts have successfully grown 10 different crops, including lettuce and radish, on the space station since 2015, according to CNN.
8. Which word can best describe the food consumed by astronauts in space
A. Low-nutrition B. Tasty-flavor C. Poor-package D. High-calorie
9. What makes it difficult to grow plants suitable to eat in space
A. The shortage of crop varieties
B. The objection of the International Space Station
C. The lack of gravity and natural light
D. The long-duration missions
10. What can be learned about The Veggie Garden
A. It can hold 10 different crops for a piece of garden.
B. It has been used to grow plants on the space station for nearly six years.
C. The “pillows” can provide plants with balanced water, nutrients and air.
D. Blue, red and orange lights are important for the growth of plants.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Life of American Astronauts on the Space Station
B. Success of Planting in Space
C. Benefits of Growing Vegetables in Space
D. Varieties of crops on the Space Station
A 9. C 10. C 11. B

根据文章第二段“If you store packaged food for a long duration, the quality, flavor and nutritional quality decrease, the vitamins degrade.”(如果你长时间储存包装食品,其质量、风味和营养质量都会下降,维生素也会降解)可知宇航员在太空中摄入的食物是低营养的。故选A。
根据文章第四段“Though astronauts have been growing plants in space for decades , cultivating edible(可食用) food without the benefits of gravity and natural light has been difficult .”(虽然宇航员已经在太空中种植植物几十年了,但在没有重力和自然光的情况下种植可食用的食物一直是困难的。)
根据文章倒数第三段“Each plant grows in a “pillow” filled with clay and fertilizer. The “pillows” are important for distributing water, nutrients and air in a healthy balance around the roots.”(每棵植物都生长在一个装满粘土和肥料的枕头里。
根据文章第三段“The benefits of growing vegetables in space are obvious, but how are they grown ”(在太空种植蔬菜的好处显而易见,但它们是如何种植的呢?)后文对如何种植太空蔬菜进行介绍,以及最后一段“So far, US astronauts have successfully grown 10 different crops, including lettuce and radish, on the space station since 2015, according to CNN.”(据美国有线电视新闻网报道,自2015年以来,美国宇航员已在空间站成功种植了10种不同的作物,包括生菜和萝卜。)

IQ is set at around 20 years old and later effort will not improve it much, recent research finds. The complexity of people’s jobs, higher education, socializing and reading all probably have little effect on cognitive (认知的) ability.
Naturally these activities have many other benefits, but little influence on IQ. However, education is particularly important at an early age when the brain is still developing. By early adulthood, though, most people’s IQ has settled down.
While some studies have suggested that cognitive activities in later life can improve IQ, Professor William Kremen, the study’s first author, thinks otherwise, “The findings suggest that the impact of education, occupational complexity and participation in cognitive activities on later life cognitive function likely reflects the opposite. In other words, they are largely the results of young adult intellectual capacity.”
The study included 1,009 men now in their 50s and 60s whose IQ was assessed when they were around 20 years old. They were given tests of abstract reasoning, verbal fluency and memory, along with other cognitive measures.
The results showed that most of the difference between the men’s IQs in mid-life was explained by the difference between them at around 20-years-old. In comparison, the complexity of the job they had, the intellectual activities they engaged in, and their education in the meantime hardly had any effect on their IQ. Brain scans also showed that IQ at age 20 was associated with the surface area of the cerebral cortex, which is the brain’s gray matter, the part that performs the higher functions of thinking, perceiving and language.
Most of the benefits of education for IQ likely happen before young adulthood, said Professor Kremen. “Our findings suggest we should look at this from a lifetime perspective. Improving cognitive reserve and reducing later life cognitive decline may really need to begin with more access to quality childhood and adolescent education.”
12. What does Kremen’s study mainly focus on
A. Who has high IQ. B. How is IQ improved
C. What determines IQ. D. When is IQ fixed.
13. What is the key factor affecting a person’s cognitive ability according to the study
A. Higher education B. The intellectual capacity around 20 years old
C. Occupational complexity D. Cognitive activities in adulthood
14. Why are the men in the study given the tests
A. To evaluate their IQ in mid-life.
B. To improve their cognitive abilities.
C. To introduce cognitive measures to them.
D. To find out reasons for their IQ differences.
15. What does Kremen suggest people do
A. Get engaged in complex jobs.
B. Keep on learning for a lifetime.
C. Have a high-quality adolescent education.
D. Join in as many cognitive activities as possible.
D 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第一段关键句“IQ is set at around 20 years old and later effort will not improve it much, recent research finds.”(最近的研究发现,智商设定在20岁左右,以后的努力不会有多大的提高。)、第二段关键句“By early adulthood, though, most people’s IQ has settled down.”(然而,到了成年早期,大多数人的智商已经稳定下来。)和第三段关键句“The findings suggest that the impact of education, occupational complexity and participation in cognitive activities on later life cognitive function likely reflects the opposite. In other words, they are largely the results of young adult intellectual capacity.”(研究结果表明,教育、职业复杂性和参与认知活动对晚年认知功能的影响可能反映了相反的结果。
根据第三段内容“While some studies have suggested that cognitive activities in later life can improve IQ, Professor William Kremen, the study’s first author, thinks otherwise, “The findings suggest that the impact of education, occupational complexity and participation in cognitive activities on later life cognitive function likely reflects the opposite. In other words, they are largely the results of young adult intellectual capacity.””(虽然一些研究表明,晚年的认知活动可以提高智商,但该研究的第一作者William Kremen教授却持相反观点,“研究结果表明,教育、职业复杂性和参与认知活动对晚年认知功能的影响可能反映了相反的结果。换句话说,它们主要是年轻人智力能力的结果。”)可知,一些研究认为晚年的认知活动可以提高智商,但William Kremen却持相反观点,他认为认知能力主要是年轻人智力能力的结果,换句话说,不是认知能力可以提高智商,而是年轻人的智商水平影响认知能力,由此可知,根据研究,影响一个人认知能力的关键因素是20岁左右的智力水平。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段内容“The study included 1,009 men now in their 50s and 60s whose IQ was assessed when they were around 20 years old. They were given tests of abstract reasoning, verbal fluency and memory, along with other cognitive measures.”(这项研究包括1009名50多岁和60多岁的男性,他们的智商是在20岁左右进行评估的。 和第五段关键句“The results showed that most of the difference between the men’s IQs in mid-life was explained by the difference between them at around 20-years-old.”(结果表明,中年男性智商的差异主要是由他们20岁左右的智商差异造成的。) 故选A项。
根据最后一段内容“Most of the benefits of education for IQ likely happen before young adulthood, said Professor Kremen. “Our findings suggest we should look at this from a lifetime perspective. Improving cognitive reserve and reducing later life cognitive decline may really need to begin with more access to quality childhood and adolescent education.””(Kremen教授说,智商教育的大部分好处可能发生在年轻成人之前。
In Australia, November is the final exam season, and for high school students, it’s one of the most important exams. ____16____ It is a stressful period for everyone. However, from my countless exam experiences, I have some tips and tricks that have helped me handle final exams.
Start early.
Although the official exam preparation period starts about one week before the final exam period, I usually start my review about two weeks earlier. Let’s admit it — no one in week 12, after being bombarded by countless assignments and tests will have any memory about the content taught in week one. ___17___ This helps me identify the parts that I do not understand very well, so that I can catch up, ask questions when teachers are not so busy and prepare myself to do practice exams later more efficiently.
Live healthily.
A lot of people stay up late reviewing before the exam, but that is not healthy at all. Sleep is necessary to restore our physical and mental functions. In particular, sleep can help consolidate (巩固) our memories! I recommend this based on my personal experience — I always feel drained the next day if I go to sleep after 2 am. Without enough sleep, I cannot stay productive and would stare at simple questions for a long time. ____18____
____19____
This may not work for everyone, but I personally find it helpful, especially after the long lockdown where I was stuck at home and studied alone. Having friends to study with not only provides us with opportunities to figure out blind spots in our understanding, but also allows us to have different perspectives, which is helpful in terms of problem-solving. ____20____ And talking to them can ease my anxiety caused by the exams. I personally recommend it.
A. Study with friends.
B. Reviewing your lessons earlier gives you a definite advantage over others.
C. Also, the presence of friends can motivate me to stay productive.
D. Get along well with friends
E. So November is a month for studying hard!
F. Sacrificing sleep time for review is not worth it.
G. I usually go through the notes I took throughout the semester to refresh my memory.

C. To express her passion for dancing. D. To introduce the joy and tears dance brought her.

In the absence of gravity plants use other environmental factors, such as light, to guide growth.
C The lack of gravity and natural light
D. The long-duration missions
10. What can be learned about The Veggie Garden
A. It can hold 10 different crops for a piece of garden.
B. It has been used to grow plants on the space station for nearly six years.
C. The “pillows” can provide plants with balanced water, nutrients and air.
D. Blue, red and orange lights are important for the growth of plants.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Life of American Astronauts on the Space Station
B. Success of Planting in Space
C. Benefits of Growing Vegetables in Space
D. Varieties of crops on the Space Station

IQ is set at around 20 years old and later effort will not improve it much, recent research finds. The complexity of people’s jobs, higher education, socializing and reading all probably have little effect on cognitive (认知的) ability.
Naturally, these activities have many other benefits, but little influence on IQ.
D Get along well with friends
E. So November is a month for studying hard!
F. Sacrificing sleep time for review is not worth it.
G. I usually go through the notes I took throughout the semester to refresh my memory.
