I got my first job at 12 as a waitress. It certainly was tiring but interesting. And when Ⅰ went on to college, it paid for tuition and housing and eventually, a camera.
From the moment I picked up a camera, I was attracted. All I wanted to do was take pictures for the university newspaper, the Minnesota Daily. The paper at that time was one of the largest in the state and was produced by young journalists who went on to work at every major magazine in the country. For the final two years, I just wanted to be a photographer. The week I finished college. I was hired by the Worthington Daily Globe.
Jim Vance was the top-notch publisher of the Globe. He had very high expectations of all the staff. With little or no instruction from him, 35 writers and photographers were expected to fill the paper with stories that were important to our readers. It was perfect training for my future career at National Geography.
I was the youngest photographer working for National Geography when I arrived in 1978, and I spent at least a decade just trying not to make mistakes. While I was grateful for the opportunity, it was very difficult for me. With each new task came the fear that this was going to be the one where they figured out that I couldn’t do the job. On many tasks, the most challenging part turned out to be the transportation. Over the years, I traveled by horse, cars train, truck and all sorts of old vehicles. I traveled by mule in Mexico, by ship along the Indian Ocean, by fishing boat in the Sea of Galilee. Wherever I traveled in the world, I wanted my pictures to make a real difference in people’s lives.
I am deeply grateful for the amazing lessons photography has taught me. I’ve learnt that women really do hold up half the sky; that language isn’t always necessary, but touch usually is; that all people are not alike, but they do mostly have the same hopes, and fears.
4. When did the author wish to become a photographer

B. Women and men are not equal in some countries.
C. People hold different hopes and ideas towards life.
D. People can still understand each other despite language barriers (障碍).
7. How is the passage developed
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving examples.
C. By time. D. By space.

Cooking with steam is of great importance in Chinese cuisine. It's one of the best ways to lock the original flavors in the ingredients.
Vegetables are healthy and full of fiber, and steaming is a quick way to cook them without using much oil. Chinese cabbage is a perfect vegetable to steam: crunchy, tender, less fibrous and mildly sweet. The tender cabbage can be steamed directly with a simple sauce consisting of garlic paste, soy sauce and sugar. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes are also great for steaming. They can be cut into thick sticks or slices and then steamed until the center becomes soft. Thin pieces of carrots, fresh sophora flowers (槐花) can be coated with dry flour and then steamed. This quick dish is usually served with a garlic paste and vinegar sauce.
Steaming fish, shrimp and crabs, is all about preserving the original taste, so freshness is the absolute No. 1 rule when we shop for seafood to be steamed For fine foods from a river, lake or sea, they must be freshly caught the day you buy them. Frozen fish is seldom steamed directly, because there can be a stronger fishy smell and taste. With all the internal organs and scales removed and blood cleaned, the fish is packed with slices of ginger and scallions (姜和葱) that can neutralize the fishiness. It's then placed in a steamer that has been preheated to boil, and cooked for 8 to 10 minutes depending on the size of the fish. The final step is to place scallions on top of the steamed fish. Then, in a small pot, heat up some oil and pour it across the body of the fish to help the flavor release. Next, drizzle (浇) a couple spoons of seasoned soy sauce for seafood around the plate and serve. When eating the fish, it's best to dip it in the sauce for the sweet taste.
8. What is the advantage of steaming according to the passage
A. Low cost. B. Sweet taste.
C. Shining appearance. D. Original flavor.
9. What may the underlined word "neutralize" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Waste. B. Add. C. Reduce. D. Gain.
10. What is the right order of making steamed fish according to the passage
①Clean the fish. ②Steam the fish. ③Drizzle some sauce. ④Pour some hot oil onto the fish.
⑤Pack the fish with some ginger and scallions.
A. ①②③④⑤ B. ①④⑤②③ C. ①⑤④③② D. ①⑤②④③
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Cooking meals with steam. B. Cooking seafood in a new way.
C. Advantages of cooking with steam. D. Tips for cooking some delicious dishes.

There is new hope for the future of a population of endangered butterflies in the American state of California. Last year, a count of the orange-and-black Western monarchs reached a record low of about 1, 900. But this year, butterfly counters are reporting tens of thousands more Western monarchs. The insects live along California's central coast in winter.
The non-profit science group Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation carries out the official study every year. It just opened the first period of this year's count on November 13. But it says early reports are positive.
Sarina Jepsen is director of Endangered Species at Xerces Society. She says volunteer counters have reported the presence of as many as 50,000 monarchs in the last few weeks. Jepsen says the finding is "... not a recovery, but we're really optimistic and just really glad that there are monarchs here and that gives us a bit of time to work toward recovery of the Western monarch migration."
In the 1980s, millions of Western monarchs gathered in trees from northern California down to western Mexico. Now, their wintering sites are mostly on California's central coast.
Western monarch butterflies travel south from the Pacific Northwest to California each winter. They return to the same places and even the same trees, where they gather. The monarchs usually arrive in California' t the beginning of November. They spread across the country once warmer weather arrives in March.
The Western monarch-butterfly population has decreased by more than 99 percent since the 1980s. Scientists do not know why the population increased this year. But Jepsen said it is likely a combination of reasons, including better conditions on their breeding grounds (繁殖地). Pacific Grove, California, known as "Butterfly Town, USA",has worked for years to help the decreasing monarch population. The city holds a parade to celebrate the butterflies every October. It also bans human interference with the monarchs. The crime carries a $ 1,000 fine.
Monarch butterflies lack state and federal legal protection that could keep their grounds from being destroyed. Last year, the butterflies failed to gain federal protection. But the insects are now among the candidates for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act.
12. What is probably the main idea of the passage
A Monarch butterflies migrated to western Mexico in the winter.
B. An official study was carried out to protect Monarch butterflies.
C. The population of Monarch butterflies is rising in California.
D. People have raised awareness of protecting Monarch butterflies.
13. Where do the Monarch butterflies live in winter now
A. Northern California. B. Central coast in California.
C. Western Mexico. D. Across the country.
14. What can we learn from the passage
A. Celebrations are held to promote the protection.
B. Humans should help Monarch with their migration.
C. Better conditions along the migration route have been provided.
D. Scientists have known the reasons for Monarch's increasing population.
15. What needs to be done according to the passage
A. More human activities need to be involved.
B. Relative state and federal laws need to be passed.
C. Federal Endangered Species Act needs to be improved.
D. The grounds of Monarch butterflies need to be enlarged.

As Christmas was coming, girls were seen huddling (聚集) in the classroom and cheerfully whispering about what gifts to give to their friends. Giving and sharing is always the topic at this time of year. Everyone's face glowed with hope, expecting surprises. At lunchtime, Lisa and her friend Jasmine were talking about where they were going to spend the holiday. Jasmine blurted out, "Lisa, I've got a great idea. When I comeback from New York, I am going to bring you the best chocolate in the world." Lisa was greatly moved but embarrassed, "Um, I will just stay at home because my family cannot afford to go anywhere. But I promise I will give you the best gift I have ever had."
Lisa went back home for Christmas and told her mother about the talk with her best friend at school. "But I can't give you extra money because the Christmas food has already cost us a lot. You can buy a gift with the coins in your piggy bank," Mom suggested. Lisa thought it was a great idea and went to a gift shop and bought a pair of gloves with roses and golden silk with all the money she had. She had never worn such beautiful gloves. All she had was a pair of old ones knitted by her mother. She admired the glistening new gloves with smiley eyes, believing Jasmine would be very happy when she handed them to her.
When the holiday was over, Lisa happily went back to school and waited at the table for Jasmine to join her for lunch.
A few minutes later, Jasmine walked towards her with nothing in her hands.

C. People hold different hopes and ideas towards life.
D. People can still understand each other despite language barriers (障碍).

Last year the butterflies failed to gain federal protection. But the insects are now among the candidates for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act.
12. What is probably the main idea of the passage
A. Monarch butterflies migrated to western Mexico in the winter.

【答案】A few minutes later, Jasmine walked towards her with nothing in her hands. No sooner had she placed down her plate than Jasmine couldn’t wait to tell Lisa everything happening in the holiday excitedly. But Lisa, seemingly, didn’t show interest in what Jasmine said, with her eyes glued to Jasmine’s dancing fingers. She was wondering whether Jasmine forgot their appointment and the gift. After a while of struggle, Lisa determined that no matter what happened, Jasmine was her best friend ever. Mustering up her courage, Lisa said, “Jasmine, here you are! Hope you’ll like it.” At the sight of the delicate gift, Jasmine froze. It suddenly dawned on her that the gift for Lisa—a huge box of chocolate—had been left at home. “Oh no, I left the chocolate at home!” Jasmine screamed. A short of silence followed until both lovely girls burst out laughing.
