"Thank goodness you have double eyelids (双眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money." said a family friend when I was five years old.
I never quite understood how having double eyelids saved my parents money until that summer when I came back to Seoul. The moment I arrived in the city, I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics (整容机构) everywhere. South Korea is known to have the highest ratio (比例) of cosmetic surgery to people worldwide. It is very common for girls to get eyelid surgery as a present when they graduate from high school.
What made South Koreans fall so madly in love with cosmetic surgery The promise of beauty. Women think it's necessary and worthy to have the cosmetic surgery. And this suffering is not for nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to attracting a better-looking partner, which then leads to better-looking children and a better lifestyle. It also plays a big role in the workplace that men are also starting to resort to cosmetic surgery. For example, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and over six feet tall, gets many more job offers than his best friend, who is shorter and heavier, even though both of them graduated from the same college and had the same GPA and certificates.
In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty equals happiness.
Are there cosmetic surgery clinics everywhere in Seoul?
(2) What do women think of the cosmetic surgery in South Korea?
(3) When do girls usually get eyelid surgery in South Korea?
(4) According to the last two paragraphs, list two advantages of cosmetic surgery.
Train Your Brain
How powerful are our brains A Chinese science TV show called Super Brain has the answer. The show is about talented people showing their great brainpower (脑力).
It is true that these people have special talents. But training is also very important. "The brains of competitors are not different from common people. Their successes come from hard work and training, "Wei Kunlin, a psychological professor (心理学教授)at Peking University and one of the judges of the show, said on Weibo.
How to improve our brainpower
Exercise
Studies say that exercise makes some abilities of our brains better, such as planning, organizing and doing different tasks. Exercise also helps put us in a good mood.
Train your memory
The more you try to remember things, the stronger your memory will be. If you train yourself to remember phone numbers and other important numbers, you may see a change.
Doing something new
Trying something new helps make new neural pathways (神经通路)in your brain. This improves your intelligence (智力). You could take a new road to school, try a new snack or even do a new exercise!
What's Super Brain about
Do the people who join in the show have special talents
(3) Where can people read Wei Kunlin's commentary (评论)on these competitors
How many suggestions does the article give us on how to improve our brain power
What do Australian teenagers do in their free time Many of them like to spend it with their friends. They play together outside or do some shopping.
But a girl named Shanaya White spends her free time in a different way — she works hard to cheer up those children with serious illnesses.
Shanaya comes from Queensland. In September 2014, she spent four days in hospital because of an illness. She found it was really hard to stay in hospital. She felt upset when she thought many children had to stay in hospital for weeks and months because of illnesses.
After learning more about childhood illnesses, she decided to help those children.
She made a Facebook Page. On it, she posted stories of other children's fights against illnesses, hoping more people would care about those children. "I name it Happy Little Smiles because I want to bring happiness and smiles to the kids in need," said Shanaya. She also made "Happy Packs" and sent the packs to those children with illnesses. Inside the packs, there were toys, books and a mix of activities.
It was a success and she made many sick children smile.
And thanks to her, more and more people began to care about and help the children.

One day I got in a taxi, and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane(车道) when, suddenly, a black car jumped out of a parking lot right in front of us. My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire(轮胎) made a very loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch(英寸) from the back of the other car.
I was frightened(恐惧). But then I couldn t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the man who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started shouting at us. I couldn t believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the man. So I asked, “Why did you just do that This man almost sent us to hospital.”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Rubbish Truck(垃圾车法则)”. He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger(愤怒) and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish gets together, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they ll throw it at you. Don t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don t take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.
Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods(心情). Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets(后悔), so love those who love you and pray(祈祷) for those who don t.
Did the taxi driver stop his car in time
What does “rubbish” in the passage mean
Why did the man shout at the taxi driver and the writer according to the passage
Will you let rubbish trucks change your moods in your life Why or why not

Body image---the way people feel about their looks---is a big problem for many young people today. According to a study, more than half the teenage girls in the USA think they should be on a diet( 节食), and almost one in five teenage boys are worried about their bodies and their weight. It seems that they don t care about their health so much.
But what causes the problem In the study, many blame(责备) the media(媒体). Turn on the TV and you ll always see beautiful models, handsome actors and tit sports stars. Open a magazine or a newspaper, look through the Internet, and it s usually the same.
In the USA, the average(平均) woman is 163 cm tall and weighs 64 kilos, but the average model is 180 cm tall and weighs 53 kilos. Many young people feel pressure to look like these "perfect" people. But for most, this is just not possible so they begin to become less confident. As a result. some stop eating healthily in order to lose weight. Students who lose so much confidence used to take part in classroom activities at school, but they don’t, now.
Is there a solution to the problem In 2019, a study In the UK advised that body image lessons should be provided in schools. Others believe its a problem that all of society needs to deal with. As Meaghan Ramsey says, "We need to judge(评判) people by what they do, not what they look like.”
Are all teenage boys in the USA worried about their bodies and weight
What’s the cause of the problem
According to the aritle, when some young people become less confident, what will they do
Do you think it is important to look like these “perfect” people Why or why not

I have spent my entire life either at the schoolhouse, on the way to the schoolhouse, or talking about what happens in the schoolhouse. Needless to say, over those years I ve had a chance to look at education reform(改革)from a lot of perspectives(观点). Some of those reforms have been good. Some of them have been not so good. And we know why kids drop out. We know why kids don t learn. It s thought family can t support their children. Some students don t want to learn anything that they aren t interested in. Some parents think others bring negative influences to their own children. We know why. But one of the things that we never discuss or we rarely discuss is the value and importance of human connection, relationships.
James Comer says that no significant(重要的)learning can occur(发生)without a significant relationship. George Washington Carver says all learning is understanding relationships. Everyone has been affected by a teacher or an adult. We can stand to have more relationships. So teachers become great actors and great actresses, and we come to work when we don t feel like it, and we re listening to policy that doesn t make sense, and we teach anyway. Kids don t learn from people they don t like.
Some people think that we can either have it in us to build a relationship or we don t. I think Stephen Covey had the right idea. He said we should just throw in a few simple things, like seeking first to understand as opposed (相反的)to being understood, simple things like apologizing(道歉). Have you ever thought that Tell a kid you re sorry, they re in shock.

We all experience bad moods(情绪) sometimes, for it is impossible to be happy all the time. We may feel sad or even angry when we are in a bad mood. This is normal, but it is important to know how to change our moods. First, we must know our bad feelings before we can do something about them. It is no use trying to ignore them. Instead, we must face them positively.
Once we have made up our mind to be happy, it is time to take action. One thing we can do is exercise. Physical activities are exciting and can light our spirits. It is the best therapy(疗法). Another way to improve our moods is to find something fun to do. We can put our heart into something we enjoy, such as movies or a trip to the park, or buy something special. Finally, we can talk with our good friends. A good friend will listen to our complaints, and his words will make us feel better.
Bad moods are inevitable(不可避免的). We need to experience them, but that doesn’t mean we have to let them continue. We are in control of our thoughts and feelings. If we can use the ways above, we will be able to beat the blues and have a happy mood.

A week before this term started, Zhou Ziyu , an eighth-grader from Heilongjiang , got some big news. Her school plans to delay(推迟) its start time to 8 am. She was quite happy!
Zhou used to (过去常常) get up at 6 am , but would study until 10 or 11 pm at night . Her school asked students to arrive at 6:30 am in summer and 7 am in winter. She felt like she didn’t get enough sleep. “ I often took naps(打盹) in class. I couldn’t concentrate (集中精力) while doing homework,” Zhou said .
In fact , all of the schools in Heilongjiang plan to adjust(调整) their start time. Primary and middle schools will have students arrive at 8 am or later.
The change will help more students get enough sleep. In general, most Chinese middle school students have to arrive at school around 7 am. Students have to get up at 6 am or even earlier if they live far away from school. While they often stay up late in the evening , they can’t get the nine hours of sleep that they need to stay healthy and active.
Zhejiang and Guizhou provinces are carrying out(执行) similar rules, though only at primary schools. In the future, more cities might join in .
However, some students still have worries about the rule. Liang Chen , from Harbin No.69 High School , prefers to (更愿意) have some study time before class begins in the morning . He thinks this is the best time to study and remember things. “My studying efficiency(效率) in the morning is much higher than during other times.” he said.

Stress is a normal physical response to things that make people feel worried. In China, about 70 percent of the 2000 students to take the college or high school entrance examination are under high stress, according to a recent survey by Wuhan University of Hubei province.
Sometimes stress is good for people. It pushes people to do their best, like while getting ready before a big competition or exam. However, too much or long-term stress makes people feel much too stressed out, and influences people's health.
When you feel stressed, there are some ways you can deal with it. Learning to solve small problems in everyday life is helpful. It can help build confidence to move on to life's bigger ones. Try saying positive things to yourself, like "I will do the best I can, "or "I can do this if I take one step at a time." That encourages you to work toward your goal. It is also important to relax sometimes, for example by getting a good night's sleep, doing exercises or taking a bath. But if you are under high stress and can't handle it by yourself, it is also good to ask parents or friends for help. Everyone has stress. Don't be too shy to tell them that you are having a hard time. They may comfort you or give you some useful advice. You may feel better just from sharing your problems with them.

In pop music, Michael Jackson is the king. He is the greatest superstar of the 20th century.
Jackson was born in 1958 to a poor family in Indiana, U. S. He had nine brothers and sisters. When Jackson was just 6 years old, his father started a band with Michael and four of his other sons: Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon. They became the Jackson 5, one of the most popular bands of the 1960s.
Jackson's solo career started to take off in the 1970s. And it reached greater heights than any other musician's in history. His 1982 album, Thriller, became the best selling album of all time. It also won eight Grammy awards.
What made Jackson's music so popular His lyrics may not be as poetic as someone like Bob Dylan. But if you listen closely to Jackson's music, you can hear that he uses more than just words. His shouts, cries and gasps (倒抽气) all add meaning to his music. They show feelings that words alone cannot. He is also famous for his very high voice. He used his voice to copy instruments.
Jackson had another special performance: the Moonwalk. This was a smooth dance of him walking backward. It looks very easy but is actually hard to copy - although lots of people have tried!
Michael Jackson was famous for his look as much as his music. Jackson was African-American. It means that he had brown skin during his childhood. As he grows older, however, his skin started to become lighter. And by the time of his death he was much whiter.
The real reason for the changes in Jackson's look was never clear. While he was very public about his music, he was very private about his health.
As with so many famous people, there have been some dark sides, too. In the 1990s and 2000s, there were charges (指控) of sexual assault (性侵犯) against Jackson.
