On the Stork Tower (登鹳雀楼)
The sun beyond the mountain glows;
The Yellow River seawards flows.
You can enjoy a grander sight;
By climbing to a greater height.
( Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
This poem is only 20 characters long, but its perfect mixture of beauty and philosophical (哲理的) thinking has made it a classic (经典) for centuries. The first two lines of the poem describe scenery, while the last two lines show the poet's feelings.
Wang Zhihuan used clever wordplay to write this poem. The first and second lines match in terms of their sound and meaning, as do the third and fourth lines.
The first line describes the setting sun in the west, while the second line describes the river flowing towards the east. Together, they make for a grand (宏伟的) view. The third and fourth lines point out the fact that the higher one stands, the farther one can see. This not only shows the poet's great aspirations (抱负), but also encourages people to keep moving ahead and not to let success or failure go to their heads (冲昏头脑).
Wang Zhihuan (688~742)was a Tang Dynasty poet. He was a brave man. He liked to travel across China, drinking and waving his sword (剑) around while singing. He was good at writing quatrains (绝句). In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students' eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies and equipment that will take effect (生效) on March 1, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students' textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point (小五号).

"Beauty is only skin deep." This expression means that beauty is only a temporary and surface (暂时而表面的) quality. And some beauty products can cause lasting harm that goes far below the surface of the skin. But people, especialy women, will take a lot of risks for beauty.
In the United States, many people use sunlight and non-natural light to darken their skin. Health experts are against it, because it may lead to skin cancer.
In the African country of Senegal, some women take health risks trying to do just the opposite. They use products that lighten the skin. The World Health Organization says that 25 percent of Senegalese women use skin-lightening products. These products can have some chemicals such as mercury, hydroquinone and sodium hydroxide (汞、对苯二酚和氢氧化钠). These are dangerous ingredients (成分) that can cause cancer andpossibly other physical harm to the skin. They can even burn the eyes and skin.
Women in Senegal say they lighten their skin for the same reasons: women all over the world make changes to their looks. They say they want to look beautiful, to find a husband, or to stand out in a crowd. But some products are so strong. They must be mixed with others before they are used.
A woman filmmaker Khardiata Sall from Senegal made a movie This Color That Worries Me. It's about the subject of skin lightening, "I used the most scary pictures so that women would clearly see the dangers. It is hard to understand why a woman would tell herself that dark skin is not beautiful. It is in their heads. They want to please a man, to be loved. Or they want to please the society, to succeed." Ms. Sall says the government needs to better control the market and the sale of skin lightening products. But she adds education is the best way to tell people against using them.

Small talk like "What do you have there? Ice-cream?" or "The weather today is beautiful, isn't it?" is a waste of time, according to some people. But scientists believe that it is actually more useful than it may appear to be.
One example comes when you are on a train or a plane. The thought of talking to the stranger can be scary and silly. But a study by the University of Chicago found that people who chat to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or keep playing their phones.
In the study, researchers asked people at Chicago train stations to start conversations with fellow travelers. Most of them refused to do so at first because they didn't expect to get a friendly answer. But the result is the opposite-most strangers didn't refuse to be talked to; instead, they were glad to talk to.
"Human beings are social animals," Nicholas Epley, one of the researchers said, "Other people are people, too. And it turns out that they'd like to get to know you."
What's more, small talk with strangers can help you feel related to your surroundings(环境). Some studies found when people are often smiled at and spoken to, there is more chance for them to have a stronger sense of belonging instead of feeling like they are being forgotten.
However, if you are already comfortable enough to make small talk with strangers, you should try to develop it into something "bigger".
A 2010 study proved that having a deep and meaningful conversation gives you even more happiness than small talk. Participants(参与者) in the study reported that compared with some simple greetings and replies, they were a lot happier when they went on with the small talk and further it into in-depth conversations.
But deep conversations can start with small talk, can't they? So the first step is to start talking, no matter how casual the topic is. And who knows, maybe an opening line as simple as "I like your hat" could lead to a serious conversation in which you learn a lot from a stranger.
According to Nicholas Epley, what is the reason for the result of the study by the University of Chicago? ______
A. Most people are scared of being refused.
B. People are naturally interested in others.
C. People are afraid of being lonely or bored.
D. People try to show their good side to strangers.
Which of the following is an advantage of small talk? ______
A. Wasting less time.
B. Getting more smiles.
C. Staying away from phones for a little while.
D. Feeling like you are a part of your surroundings.
Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? ______
(①②③④⑤⑥⑦⑧=Paragraphs1-8)
A. ①/②③④⑤/⑥⑦/⑧ B. ①/②③④/⑤⑥⑦/⑧
C. ①/②③/④⑤/⑥⑦⑧ D. ①/②③④⑤/⑥⑦⑧
What can we infer about the author's attitude toward small talk? ______
A. The author thinks deep conversations may start before small talk.
B. The author believes small talk is useless without deep conversations.
C. The author agrees people should start small talk actively.
D. The author doubts whether people should start small talk.

Once upon a time, there was a seed(种子) and because he was only a seed, nobody cared to notice him. Thus, feeling kind of inferior, the seed gave no importance to his own existence.
Then one day, a wind picked him up and threw him on an open field under the hot sun. he wanted to know why. But instead of any answer, he was provided with rain besides sunlight, sometimes small and sometimes heavy.
Time flew and years later he saw a traveler sitting by his side. "Thank God for this. I really need some rest," he heard the traveler say.
"What are you talking about?" the seed asked. He thought the man was making fun of him. Sure, he had seen many people sitting by his side but no one ever spoke to him like that.
"Who's this?" the man was surprised.
"It's me. The seed."
"The seed?" the man looked at the big tree. "Are you kidding me? You are no seed. You are a big tree!"
"Really?"
"Yes! Why do you think people come here? To feel your shade!"
A moment passed before the traveler's words touched the chord(心弦) in him. The seed, now a big tree, smiled for the first time in his life. Years of sufferings (遭受) from the sun and the rain finally made sense to him.

Are fingerprints the best way to identify a person? Scientists at Binghamton University in the US say that "brainprints" could be the best. They developed a new technology that can identify people based on their brain activity, and it's surprisingly accurate.
Scientists recorded the brain activity of 50volunteers. They scanned (扫描) the volunteers' brains while they looked at a series of 500pictures, including a piece of pizza and actor Leonardo DiCaprio."
The pictures that were chosen can cause very different reactions (反应) person to person, Dr. Sarah Laszlo, a scientist at the university and the study's leader, told the local newspaper in an email. They chose the pictures based on a pre-study. Scientists asked the volunteers about which foods and famous people that they loved and hated, and they used that information in the study.
As a result, the volunteers' brains all reacted differently to each picture. When they saw different pictures, a special computer program was able to create a "brainprint". These "brainprints" allowed scientists to identify each volunteer with 100% accuracy.
Brainprints have some potential advantages that fingerprints don't have. That's because fingerprints can't be changed. Once they are stolen, others can use them for anything they want. But brainprints can be changed. That's because they change when a person's brain reacts to different things, but the brainprints still belong to the person. "So, in the unlikely event that attackers were able to steal a brainprint from someone, the person could then ‘reset (重置)' their brainprint," Laszlo said.
Scientists think the brainprints could one day be used for high-security areas to protect sensitive or dangerous information. In the more distant future, scientists plan to use these findings to show a person's mental state.
The new technology to identify people is based on ______ .
A. a special printer B. their fingerprints
C. their brain activity D. the shape of their brain
Which of the following is NOT true about the study? ______
A. 50volunteers were tested in the study.
B. Scientists scanned the volunteers' brains.

What advantage do brainprints have while fingerprints don't have? ______
A. Brainprints can be changed.
B. Brainprints can't be changed.
C. Brainprints don't belong to the person.
D. Fingerprints can be changed.
In the future, brainprints may be used ______ .
A. To identify a person.
B. To scan a person's brain.
C. To steal things.
D. To protect sensitive information.
