Almost every night for more than 10 years, Kirk Alexander, 48, ordered a late dinner from his local restaurant Domino’s Pizza. But for the past two weeks, he hasn’t called for even once.
“A few of my staff mentioned that we hadn’t seen his order in a while. Then I found that it had been 12 days since he last ordered, which is not like him,” Domino’s general manager Sarah Fuller said, feeling she could no longer ignore Kirk’s recent absence.
Sarah has known Kirk since 2009, when she started working at the Domino’s Pizza as a deliver driver and often made the short trip to Kirk’s home about six minutes away. She knew Kirk worked from home, and neighbors said he seldom left. She also knew that he had some health problems in the past. Something, Sarah worried, was wrong.
Around 1 a.m. on May 8, Sarah sent delivery driver Sean Hamblen to visit Kirk’s home. Sean arrived at Kirk’s home and knocked on the front door several times. There was no answer. He later noticed that the lights and the TV in the home were on. When he called Kirk’s phone, it went straight to voice mail.
Sean drove back to the restaurant to tell Sarah and they decided to call 911. Soon, officers arrived at Kirk’s home. So did Sarah and Sean. They heard a man calling for help from inside. Officers broke down the door and found Kirk on the floor in need of medical attention at once after suffering from a heart attack. One day later, they might have been too late.
So is keeping an eye on regular customers part of Domino’s business plan Not really. “Kirk is part of our family here and we feel like we need to do something.” Sarah said.
4. Why did Sarah send a delivery driver to visit Kirk
A. Because her staff asked her to do so.
B. Because she was worried about Kirk.
C. Because she wanted Kirk to order meals.
D. Because she knew Kirk had a heart attack.

B. Domino’s Pizza served as a life savior
C. Regular customers of Domino’s Pizza
D. Helping others means helping ourselves

However, studies have shown that the wax coating is bad for our body.
It is advisable to have a break of 2-3 days before we start to eat another packet of instant noodles because our body needs about 3 days to clear that wax coating away. Do you know the danger of having too much wax coating in our stomach It will lead to cancer if it is in our body for so long.
Luckily, there is a way of reducing the danger before we eat instant noodles. First, wash the noodles with warm water, stir (搅拌) them and pour away the water containing the wax coating. Then repeat the first step and try to stir them again to wash away the wax coating on the noodles before cooking them. The shop vendors (供应商) will often wash away the dangerous wax coating.

Which comes first, happiness or money Are richer people happier And if so, how do people get much richer A recent study could tell you the answer.
The study looked into thousands of teenagers and found that those who felt better about life as young adults tended to have higher incomes by the time they turned 29. Those who were happiest earned an average of $8, 000 more than those who were the most depressed.
The researchers, from University College London and the University of Warwick, say that very gloomy teens, no matter how tall or smart they were, earned 10% less than their peers, while the happier ones earned up to 30% more.
Happier teenagers have an easier time getting through school, college and a job interview, chiefly because they always feel better about life. It may also be true that happier people find it easier to make friends, who are often the key to homework help or networking.
A report in June suggested that professional respect was more important than dollars in terms of workplace happiness. In August scientists announced that they had found the gene for happiness in women, Alas (the same gene doesn't appear to have the same effect on men). And in October researchers in the UK and in the US announced that people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day report being the happiest.
The big question is: if it really is true that happier kids end up being wealthier kids, is it necessary for parents to get their kids to do the homework The fact is that no homework will make kids happy but surely hurt their grades. Studies do show, after all, that more education leads to better-paid jobs, which may give us a deep thought.
"These findings show that the teenagers’ happiness is important to their future success," one of the report's authors writes. "But what is the most important is that we should find a way to help children gain more satisfaction from doing schoolwork."
12. What conclusion can the researchers draw from the recent study
A. Happy teenagers grow up to be wealthier.
B. Money can make people become happier.
C. Wealth has nothing to do with happiness at all.
D. Schoolwork can help teens achieve success.
13 The main reason why happier people have more chances to succeed is that_____.
A. they are easy to communicate with others
B. they are good at doing their schoolwork
C. they are hopeful and optimistic about their life
D. they eat much more fruit and vegetables a day
14. The underlined word “gloomy” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.
A. upset B. glorious
C. happy D. wealthy
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. The way to educate kids B. The source of happiness
C. How to achieve your goal D. The secret of being wealthier

13. The main reason why happier people have more chances to succeed is that_____.
A. they are easy to communicate with others
B. they are good at doing their schoolwork
C. they are hopeful and optimistic about their life
D. they eat much more fruit and vegetables a day
14. The underlined word “gloomy” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.

分析句子可知,空缺处引导了一个定语从句,修饰先行词the only planet in the solar system,在从句中作主语;当先行词有the only修饰时,关系代词只能用that。故填that。
由so far可知,此处应用现在完成时,主语为no sign,助动词用has。故填 has been。

Dear Tom,
How are things going I can’t wait to tell you the good news what my family will take a trip to England this winter. My father often say that it will be a good chance for me to experience English culture. The journey will be tired and long. We will take a flight at midnight. It will be dark all the way to England, but we can see nothing through the windows. We will stay at there for two weeks. Could you offer me some advices on where to stay, what to eat and how to travel in such short time I’d appreciate you if you can provide me with some necessary information. I’m sure your suggestions will surely make my visit comfortably.
I’m looking forward to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Max

6advices→advice 7.short前加a 8.you→it 9.comfortably→comfortable
10.hear→hearing
故将what改为that。
短语in a short time表示“在短时间内”,故将short前加a。
I’d appreciate it if you can…
根据短语make sth.+adj.
短语look forward to doing sth.

Dear Mr Evans,
I am indeed sorry to tell you that I won't be able to attend the lecture on English history tomorrow afternoon. My mother suddenly fell ill and was taken to hospital last night and my father is on a business trip to Beijing now. I am afraid that I will have to take care of her these days.
However I am actually very interested in English society and history. I wonder if it is possible for the talk to be recorded and if so, could I borrow the tape It would mean a great deal to me to listen to the tape and learn what is covered in the talk.
Please allow me to say sorry again. I sincerely hope that you will be able to understand my situation and accept my apology.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
