Princess quiz time! How did Snow White survive How did Cinderella (《灰姑娘》) leave her evil stepmother How did Sleeping Beauty finally wake up
A kind-hearted person always comes to save the princess, like a prince or a godmother. Princesses cannot protect themselves, though they are very pretty and nice. They always need the help of others.
However, in fact, women can’t put their life in the hands of a prince-like man. They need to work and even fight for their own happiness. The traditional image of a princess is getting out of date.
Recently, Disney, a company famous for its princess movies, posted the “top 10 rules for being a modern princess”. You will not find any rules related to beauty or looks. The rules focus on loyalty, honesty and other moral values. The rules say princesses need to believe in themselves and try their best to get out of trouble, instead of waiting for a prince’s help.
It’s not the first time Disney princesses have caught up with society’s development. In 1950, when people’s hearts were broken by World War II, Disney created Cinderella. In 1990, Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast (《美女与野兽》) loved reading when education was a man’s special right in the past. Belle showed the improvement of women’s position in society. Now is Elsa from the film Frozen (《冰雪奇缘》), a symbol of modern princess.
“This is brilliant – ‘The top 10 rules of being a modern princess’ – (it’s) about time,” a group named Confidently Mom said on social media website Twitter. Princesses are still very beautiful, but inner character is the key to being a princess.
4. What does the story think modern women should be like
A. They should turn to others for help.
B. They should depend on themselves for their own happiness.
C. They don’t need to care about their appearances.
D. They should depend on men to do most things.
5. Disney’s rules for being a modern princess focus on a girl’s _____.
A. looks B. education
C. position in society D. thought
6. The images were created to catch up with the society’s development except _____.
A. Belle B. Cinderella
C. Godmother D. Elsa
7. What does the group Confidently Mom think of the rules
A. Fantastic B. Meaningless
C. Doubtful D. Social

It was about 10:15 p.m. Janice Esposito got off the train at the Bellport, New York, got into her car and began driving home. She had traveled the route so many times that she almost drove automatically: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then—bang! Out of nowhere a car crashed into Esposito’s car, pushing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. Injured but mostly shocked by the crash and by the airbags that popped up, she got stuck in the vehicle.
As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed when he heard the crash coming from not far outside his bedroom window.
A volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, DiPinto, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and rushed out. “Any firefighter would have done what I did,” he said. “We’re always on duty. ”
The first car he came upon, 2,000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once making sure the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Esposito's car straddling (骑跨) the railroad tracks. And then he heard a bell sound, which signaled a coming train.
DiPinto rushed to Esposito’s car and hit on the driver’s side window. She just looked at him, “I don’t know where I am,” she said.
“You’re on the railroad tracks,” DiPinto yelled. “We have to get you off right now!” The train was traveling at a speed of 65 miles per hour toward them. The driver’s door couldn’t be opened due to the crash, so DiPinto ran to the passenger side. He threw open the door, pushed aside the airbags, seized Esposito’s arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he finally got her out and walked her to safety as quickly as he could.
Within seconds, the train crashed into the car. “It was like a Hollywood movie, ” DiPinto told reporters the next day.
“Last night, ” said Greg Miglino Chief of the South Country Ambulance, “the hero arrived in pajamas, not in a fire truck. ”
8 What can we know about the accident from the first paragraph

C. The crash was violent. D. It should have been avoided.
9. Why was the situation so dangerous
A. Esposito was badly injured. B. Esposito was to be hit by the train.
C. Esposito was firmly stuck in the car. D. The driver’s door couldn’t be opened.
10 What does Greg Miglino really mean
A. He is praising DiPinto’s heroic action. B. DiPintodidn’t act as professionally.
C. A firefighter should be ready any time. D. Fire trucks are not enough for emergencies.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. A woman had an accident on the way home at night.
B. A woman had a narrow death escape.
C. A firefighter managed to become a hero overnight.
D. A firefighter saved a woman from a further accident.

There was once a man who penned comics(漫画) under the name Stan Lee. This man originally wished to leave comics behind and write serious literature. But he never made that career change.
Born Stanley Martin Lieber in 1922 in New York City, he has contributed more to the world than just a few fun stories. At 17, Lee began working as an assistant for the Timely comics group (today’s well-known Marvel Comics). Two years later he was given a chance to write for his first comic, “Captain America”. His skills in the business led him to become the comic-book division’s editor-in-chief until 1972.
After working with comics for many years, Lee became tired of the material he was told to write. For a long time, comic books were considered silly stories. The characters weren’t complex, and the dialogue was short and simple. Lee wanted more from his work.
The Fantastic Four was born after his wife asked, “Why don’t you write one book the way you would like to do it ” With that comic, Lee helped change comics from simple action stories to the complex narratives (叙述文) they are today. However, he still hasn’t done changing the industry.
In the early 1960s, Stan Lee and another writer created the Spider-Man character. In one edition of Spider-Man, Lee wrote a story in which the superhero’s friend almost dies from drug abuse. From the 1950s until 2011, comic publishers followed the rules given by the Comics Code Authority (CCA), who disapproved of drug use in comics.
But Lee published the comic without CCA’s agreement. The story sold, and there was a positive response to the story’s focus on a serious problem in society. The CCA ended up changing its rules to allow more inspirational stories like this.
From this victory, Lee went on to create more interesting and realistic characters that dealt with both super and real life problems.
12. The underlined part “that career” in Paragraph 1 refers to the job as _____.
A. a superhero B. a comic actor
C. a comic book creator D. a serious literature writer
13. When was Captain America written by Stan Lee
A. In 1939. B. In 1941. C. In 1960. D. In 1972.
14. When The Fantastic Four was created, what happened to the comic industry
A. Spider-Man was published.
B. Stan Lee left the comic industry.
C. Stan Lee’s wife began to work on comics.
D. The comics began to tell complex stories.
15. What can we know from the text
A. Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee himself.
B. Stan Lee likes to discuss social issues in his comics.
C. The story of Spider-Man came from Stan Lee’s friend.
D. The CCA has been carrying out rules without changing them.

Meaningless
C. Doubtful D. Social
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. A

【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文第五段首句“It’s not the first time Disney princesses have caught up with society’s development.”

8. What can we know about the accident from the first paragraph
A. Esposito was not familiar with the road. B. Esposito was driving too fast.
C. The crash was violent. D. It should have been avoided.
9. Why was the situation so dangerous
A. Esposito was badly injured. B. Esposito was to be hit by the train.
C. Esposito was firmly stuck in the car. D. The driver’s door couldn’t be opened.
10. What does Greg Miglino really mean
A. He is praising DiPinto’s heroic action. B. DiPintodidn’t act as professionally.
