Mia, a little monkey, lived with her mother on a banyan tree. Her best friend was Lily, a bird who also lived on the same tree with her family.
One day, the two friends were on their way back home from school. Lily said that Raksha Bandhan was round the corner and she was going to make rachis (保护绳) for her two brothers. She asked Mia if she wanted to help her. Mia said sorry because she had some housework to do. Then they went to their own homes.
In many parts of India and Nepal, Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of the relationship between a brother and a sister. The sister ties a rakhi on the brother’s hand and in return, the brother gives promises to protect her and also gives her a gift.
Mia understood that Raksha Bandhan did not belong to her — she was an only child, so she refused to join Lily. She climbed the banyan tree and sat on a branch (树枝), looking sad. Mia’s mother came up to her and asked why.
Hearing Mia's reason her mother had an idea, saying, “But you too can celebrate the festival with your brother — this banyan tree!”
“How can a tree be my brother ” asked Mia in surprise.
“This tree has been protecting us for years. We live on it and rest in its shade (树荫). You and your friends play on its branches. So, it ‘plays’ with you just like a brother does,” explained Mia’s mother.
Mia’s face lit up. Oh, yes! The banyan tree was just like her brother! Then she joined Lily at her house and together they made three rakhis.
On the day of Raksha Bandhan, eager (热切的) to celebrate it with her tree brother, Mia woke up early. She tied the rakhi on one of its branches and hugged (拥抱) the tree. “Thank you for being my brother!” said Mia.
4. What might Lily’s brothers do after receiving her rakhis
A. Hug the banyan tree.
B. Promise to protect her.
C. Do housework with her.
D. Help her with her studies.

B. Her best friend Lily refused to play with her.
C. She had no one to celebrate the festival with.
D. Her best friend Lily did not want to her.
6. The banyan tree could be Mia’s brother because of its_______.
A. age B. role C. size D. power
7. What did Mia do after hearing her mother’s idea
A. She cleaned her house.
B. She went to find her brother.
C. She climbed the banyan tree.

Researchers have been looking forward to using tiny flying robots to settle important tasks. The machines could be used to help astronauts on space missions, and even to help bees with plant pollination(授粉). However, fitting the heavy electric equipment that is used to power and control the wings into the tiny robot has been challenging. Now here comes a special flying robot- RoboBee X-Wing. It is the world’s lightest aerial vehicle that can fly not tied to a power source.
Made by Harvard researchers, the insect-inspired robot weighs only 259 milligrams, has four wings whose distance is 3.5 centimeters, and stands 6.5 centimeters high. Its four small wings, which can flap(拍动) up to 170 times a second, are controlled by actuators(驱动器). Six small solar cells are fitted above the wings to provide the power.
To test its flying abilities, the team, led by Dr. Noah Jafferis and PhD student Elizabeth Helbling, exposed the RoboBee X-Wing’s solar cells to LED lighting. To their delight, the tiny robot’s wings began to flap, and it rose, keeping a flight for about half a second. Though the robot lost its flight ability as soon as the power source was turned off, its short flight was cheered for its huge effect on the future of tiny flying robots.
However, though the current RoboBee X-Wing is a step in the right direction, it is not quite ready for practical use. The researchers also hope to experiment with other power sources, such as batteries, sun light or radio frequency signals, and to add more advanced “brains” and sensor systems to help the robot navigate and complete tasks independently.
8. What is special about RoboBee X-Wing
A. It is for dangerous tasks.
B. It can fly for a long time.
C. It can fly not tied to a power source.
D. It is powered directly by the sunlight .
9. How does the writer describe RoboBee X-Wing in Paragraph 2
A By using figures.
B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments
D. By providing research results.
10. What is the situation facing RoboBee X-Wing
A. It can’t be used in crowded places.
B. It will be used for giving directions.
C. It will be powered by radio signals.
D. It still can’t be used widely at present.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Health. B. Science. C. Education. D. Entertainment.

France is fighting food waste with firm determination. A new law has been passed in the country that will ban grocery stores from throwing away unsold food. If it’s still safe to eat, the food must be donated to charity; if not, it goes to farmers for use as animal feed.
Supermarkets will no longer be allowed to destroy unsold food by intention in order to prevent people from eating it. There are many people who forage for food in dumpsters behind stores, wanting to take advantage of the perfectly safe food that gets thrown away on a daily basis. Food waste is a global problem. It is reported that the average French person throws out 20 to 30 kilograms of food a year — 7 kg of which is still in its wrapping.
Not everyone is happy about the new legislation.
A group of food foragers stated their concerns in an open letter: “Food waste is a deep problem.” They are worried that it creates the illusion of doing one’s part — a “false and dangerous idea of a magic solution” — while failing to address the deeper reasons for such waste.
“The fight against food waste is everyone’s business, but we can’t win it unless we completely change the structures within our food system that are responsible for this waste.”
The supermarkets aren’t pleased because their food waste represents only 5 to 10 percent of the 7.1 million tons of food wasted annually in France. By contrast, restaurants waste 15 percent and consumers 67 percent. “The law is wrong in both target and intent,” argues Jacques Creyssel, head of the distribution organization for big supermarkets. “Big stores are already the major food donors.”
Despite the naysayers, France’s new law is a move in the right direction. Wasting food absolutely needs to become a socially abhorrent thing to do. If legislation is what’s needed to get people thinking about conservation, then it’s not a bad thing.
12. What should we do about unsafe food that is unsold in grocery stores
A. Sell it at a discount. B. Donate it to charity.
C. Use it as animal feed. D. Destroy it on purpose.
13. What do we know about the food foragers
A. They are greatly concerned about the law.
B. They have addressed the main cause of such waste.
C. They want to change the structures of our food system.
D. They think fighting against food waste is their business.
14. How much food is wasted by restaurants every year in France
A. About 1 million tons. B. About 4 million tons.
C. About 5 million tons. D. About 7.1 million tons.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the law on forbidding food waste
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Disappointed.

Hearing Mia's reason, her mother had an idea, saying, “But you too can celebrate the festival with your brother — this banyan tree!”

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. C

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Wasting food absolutely needs to become a socially abhorrent thing to do. If legislation is what’s needed to get people thinking about conservation, then it’s not a bad thing.(浪费食物绝对需要成为一件社会厌恶的事情。如果需要立法来让人们考虑保护环境,那么这并不是一件坏事)”可推知,作者对禁止浪费食物的法律持支持态度。故选C。
