U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the best countries for adventure, based on each country’s score across five features: fun, friendliness, climate, scenery, and charm.
Brazil
With a perfect 10 on both the “fun” and “charm” scores, the country’s wide landmass makes it easy to explore vastly varying landscapes in completely different ways. Visitors can go from surfing the Pororoca on the Amazon River to resting on a Caribbean-like beach on the islands off the eastern coast. Maybe they like exploring some of the unique places, like the white dunes (沙丘) of Lencois Maranhenses or the wild look of Ilha Grande.
Italy
While Italy might be best known for its food, art and architecture, the country has a more actively adventurous side too, ranking highest in the “scenery” score.
In Catania, Sicily, people can swim in the deepest blue sea and after few hours be on the top of the highest active volcano in Europe----Etna. From one village to the next, from valley to hilltop, the culture changes, the food varies and even the language can be different.
Spain
With its sky-high scores in “friendliness” and “fun”, adventure in Spain is always as close as the nearest street, say residents. The thing people most enjoy in Spain is the street life.
Besides, if you love winter, head for Madrid, which is surrounded by mountains and has three ski resorts within an hour’s drive, while warm weather lovers are better off in beachfront Barcelona.
Thailand
Combining high scores in both “scenery” and “fun”, Thailand attracts an eclectic(兼容并蓄的)mix of people that make for an adventurous atmosphere throughout the country. This can best be experienced on the island of Koh Phangan where the popular Full Moon Party is held each month.
People looking for more traditional exciting adventure should head for Chiang Mai to try whitewater rafting on the Mae Taeng River, or attempt waterfall abseiling(索降) at the Doi Inthanon National Park.
31. In Italy, you can________.
A. rest on a Caribbean beach
B. swim in the largest sea in the world
C. enjoy the scenery on the top of Etna
D. appreciate more friendliness than in Spain
32. Where is the eclectic spirit best shown in Thailand
A. At the Doi Inthanon National Park.

I was out of work, doing nothing but passing the time when I came across an advertisement where you could apply to be a volunteer in a blood donation camp. When I was in college, I tried to donate blood for several times, but I failed because I was underweight. After that it never occurred to me to donate again, so the ad caught my attention. I dialed the number and volunteered for it.
It was fun volunteering for it. The blood donation camp was set up every three months, so I used to go out and meet new and old donors. It was a sort of picnic for me till one day a teenage girl came up to the camp.
“Hello! Um,I'm suffering from hemolytic anemia(溶血性贫血),so I just want to know if there is an arrangement in the camp for plasma (血浆) donors " she asked.
To be frank, I could not even catch what she was suffering from, but I was sure I heard"anemia". Though a layman in biology, at least I knew "anemia" had something to do with a deficiency(缺乏)of blood in a person. I recalled all the key points of my biology classes just not to make a fool of myself there but still said,"I'm sorry I didn't get your question. What are you suffering from "
"I'm suffering from hemolytic anemia. It is a disorder where the red blood cells are destroyed before their normal life span. In every 120 days, I undergo a blood transfusion," she replied.
"Oh, I'm sorry, but clearly you need blood in your body. Then why do you .…."
She smiled and interrupted me, "I just want to donate the plasma. You know, it is because of people like you that I'm able to stand here. Everything I do is a gift from people who donate blood. I'm so grateful to all of you and I also want to participate in saving lives. I want to donate plasma in case there is someone who needs a transfusion of plasma."
I was speechless. I had never taken blood donation seriously. For me, it was just a day of fun, laughing with others and eating free ice cream. Here I was standing before a person who was sick but still willing to help others. So I urge everyone to donate blood as much as they can.It saves lives! It truly does!
34. Why did the advertisement appeal to the author
A. She had never managed to donate blood before.
B. She needed to do something for a living.
C. She wanted to help more people in need.
D. She thought it interesting to do the work.
35. What does the underlined word "layman" in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Genius. B. Beginner.
C. Expert. D. Nonprofessional.
36. What was the purpose of the girl's plasma donation
A. To call on more people to donate blood.
B. To give back to society for saving her life.
C. To help those having financial difficulties.
D. To reduce the number of blood transfusions.
37. Which of the following best shows the author's emotional changes when talking with the girl
A. Worried → grateful. B. Confused → ashamed.
C. Amused → regretful. D. Annoyed → embarrassed.
A 35. D 36. B 37. B

File it under strange things cats do! Last month, a post made thousands of people do some rather strange behavior themselves: taping a square on the floor and seeing if their cat would sit in it. Evidently, a lot of feline (猫科的) friends ended up sitting in these pretend boxes their people made, according to the Washington Post. But why Why do cats love boxes—even outlines (轮期) of boxes
Well, why do cats do anything they do People have been trying to figure that out for the past 4,000 years. Feline behavioral scientists say that cats love boxes because seeking out confined (封闭的) spaces is the nature of the larger species from which the domesticated (被驯养的) cats evolved. Out in the wild, confined spaces allow felines to protect themselves and track their prey (捕食物) according to Live Science. A study out of Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed that hiding in boxes significantly reduces cats’ stress levels and can even make them more willing to interact with humans overall. Another study suggests that they are drawn to boxes because they are more comfortable at a higher temperature than most of us keep our homes. Thus, the box provides them with a way to stay warm.
One Reddit user guessed that the ancient Egyptians kept what we now know as the domesticated cat having a natural preference for sitting in boxes because it helped to keep their pets from wandering. “By the hundredth generation or so, even the outline of a box was enough.…. and that habit is still present in them to this day.” This needs more scientific evidence. But it could help to explain why a cat would be drawn to a tape-on-the-floor box.
38. What does the author mainly want to introduce by mentioning that post
A. Cats can easily get fooled.
B. Cats are a very strange animal.
C. Cats have a preference for boxes.
D. Cats love playing with their owners.
39. According to feline behavioral scientists, why do cats love confined spaces
A. They put their prey in confined spaces.
B. They want to interact with humans this way.
C. They get used to reducing stress in confined spaces.
D. They’ve evolved this interest from the early bigger cat family.
40. Which of the following explanations remains to be proved
A. Cats need to keep their body warm.
B. Cats feel more comfortable in the box.
C. Cats were made to keep still in the box.
D. Confined spaces bring cats a sense of security.
41. What would be the best title for the text
A. When do cats develop a taste for boxes
B. Why do cats do anything felines do
C. Why do cats have strange behavior
D. Why do cats love boxes
C 39. D 40. C 41. D
根据第一段的“Evidently, a lot of feline (猫科的) friends ended up sitting in these pretend boxes their people made, according to the Washington Post. But why Why do cats love boxes—even outlines (轮期) of boxes (据《华盛顿邮报》报道,很明显,很多猫科动物的朋友最终都坐在他们的人制作的这些假盒子里。但是为什么呢?为什么猫喜欢盒子甚至盒子的轮廓?)”可知,作者提到post的目的是想引出下文,介绍猫咪对于盒子的偏爱。故选C项。
【39题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“Feline behavioral scientists say that cats love boxes because seeking out confined (封闭的) spaces is the nature of the larger species from which the domesticated (被驯养的) cats evolved. (猫科动物行为科学家说,猫喜欢盒子是因为寻找封闭空间的本质从被驯化的大物种进化而来的)”可知,猫咪这种兴趣是从早期的大型猫科动物进化而来的,故选D项。
【40题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“One Reddit user guessed that the ancient Egyptians kept what we now know as the domesticated cat having a natural preference for sitting in boxes because it helped to keep their pets from wandering. “By the hundredth generation or so, even the outline of a box was enough.…. and that habit is still present in them to this day.” This needs more scientific evidence.(“一位Reddit用户猜测,古埃及人让我们现在知道的家猫有一种自然偏好,那就是坐在盒子里,因为这有助于防止他们的宠物四处游荡。到大约100代人的时候,甚至一个盒子的外形就足够了..... 直到今天,这种习惯仍然存在于他们身上。”这需要更多的科学证据)”可知,让猫咪一直静静地呆在盒子里的这个猜测还需要更多的科学证据,故选C项。
【41题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段话“But why Why do cats love boxes—even outlines (轮廓) of boxes (但是为什么呢?为什么猫爱盒子甚至盒子的轮廓?)”可知,文章第一段话引出主题,后文从科学的角度在解释原因。因此“为什么猫咪喜欢盒子?”可以作为本文最佳标题。故选D项。

On August 3, 2020, a New Jersey schoolteacher named Julia Mooney put on a grey button-down dress and wore it to work. She wore it the next day and the next. In fact, she continued to wear that same dress for 100 days in a row. Mooney wanted to get people---her middle school students, in particular---thinking about fashion in a new way and how we live in what she describes as a "culture of excess", closets overflowing with clothes far more than we need.
At first, Mooney said nothing to her students about her experiment. There was no formal class discussion until several weeks later, at which point the students were responsive. Mooney said that her students could really understand the idea that we need to judge each other based on what we do and not what we wear. "As they try to define themselves the students are often identifying with brands or superficial(表面上的)things. Many seemed excited to have a reason to talk about how silly all of that really is."she said.
A quest for greater simplicity is partly what inspired Mooney in the first place. On her website, she wrote that "spending a long time thinking and worrying about what to wear in the morning will be a thing of the past". It also solved the problem of limited closet space in an old house.
If there was a tear (破洞)Mooney patched it with her sewing machine. She was careful with it so she wore an apron(围裙) to keep it clean---just like people did in years gone by.She washed the dress on weekends.
“The challenge I'm presenting is this: Let's think before we buy it, wear it, throw it away and buy again. Are we just perpetuating(使持续)a culture that defines us based on what we're wearing rather than what we're doing What if we spent our energy trying to be good, interesting humans instead of trying to look good and interesting " she said.
Mooney herself is back to wearing pants to work, but the effect of the experiment lingers. She said, "I'm expressing my interest in the health of our planet and the people who occupy it,while channeling less of my energy into my wardrobe and more into loving my children, being patient with my students and embracing my day-to-day existence."
42. Why did Julia Mooney wear the same dress continuously
A. She liked that dress most.
B. She tried to save time and money.
C. She had to follow a fast fashion trend.
D. She wanted to arouse people's reflection.
43. Which word best describes the students' attitude to the culture of judging people by their appearance
A. Opposed. B. Indifferent.
C. Uncertain. D. Optimistic.
44. What did the author mainly talk about in paragraph 4
A. The aim Mooney wanted to achieve.
B. The influence Mooney was trying to exert.
C. Efforts Mooney made to keep the plan going well.
D. Difficulties Mooney encountered in carrying out the plan.
45. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. It is our responsibility to protect the earth's environment.
B. Mooney is putting more energy into worthwhile things.
C. Mooney doesn't care what she wears every day.
D. People should be grateful for their daily lives.
D 43. A 44. C 45. B

Like many children across the United States, Emerson Weber, 11, is sheltering at home, which makes it hard to connect with people the way she'd like. So the fifth-grader decided to ramp up her letter writing.
Emerson, who already wrote an average of five to ten letters per week, decided to drop an extra note to her own mailman. "In return, she's gotten dozens of letters, a sign of how important human connection is during the pandemic," said her dad, who shared the story on the Internet.
In her note to mailman Doug Scott, Emerson wrote, "The reason why you are very important in my life is that I don't have a phone so how else am I supposed to stay in touch with my friends You make it possible!" She put the letter in the mailbox and the next day received a package with two notes and stamps inside. One letter was from Scott and the other from his supervisor(主管)at the US Postal Service(USPS), who wanted to share how touched they were by her message.
Emerson's note eventually landed in the corporate newsletter(时事通讯)of the USPS. Then, the unexpected happened. Letters poured in from postal workers from across the country. "The power of connection is what we are delivering, as we bring medicines, letters and goods to people staying at home," USPS spokesman David Rupert said. Because we are hard at work, we are helping keep them safe and connected."
Now, Emerson is writing up to 25 letters each week to respond to her new postal pen pals. "I just think now we need to be thankful for them because we need them during this time," she said.
Emerson's dad admitted he was shocked by the response at first but believed there was a message in this. He explained, "At present, any sort of human contact has more meaning."
46. What does the underlined phrase "ramp up" in Para. I probably mean (no more than I words)
47. Why did Emerson write to Doug Scott (no more than 8 words)
48. What happened to Emerson after her note was published in the USPS' newsletter (no more than 8 words)
49. What was Emerson's father's attitude to her action during the pandemic (no more than 12words)
50. Do you think what Emerson did is meaningful Please give your reason. (no more than 20words)
46. Increase.
47. Because he wanted to express his appreciation.
48. Letters poured in from postmen across the country.
49. He supported it.
50. Yes. Because it can promote meaningful human contact.
根据文章第一段“Like many children across the United States, Emerson Weber, 11, is sheltering at home, which makes it hard to connect with people the way she'd like. So the fifth-grader decided to ramp up her letter writing.(像美国各地的许多孩子一样,11岁的Emerson Weber也躲在家里,这使得她很难以自己喜欢的方式与人联系。因此,这位五年级学生决定ramp up写信数量。)”及第二段“Emerson, who already wrote an average of five to ten letters per week, decided to drop an extra note to her own mailman.(Emerson平均每周已经写了五到十封信,她决定给自己的邮递员多写一张便条。)”
根据文章第三段“In her note to mailman Doug Scott, Emerson wrote, "The reason why you are very important in my life is that I don't have a phone so how else am I supposed to stay in touch with my friends You make it possible!"(Emerson在给邮递员Doug Scott的信中写道:“你在我的生活中非常重要的原因是我没有手机,所以我怎么能和我的朋友保持联系呢?你让它成为可能!”)”可知,Emerson感谢Doug Scott的原因是:Doug Scott使在疫情期间没有手机的Emerson能够仍然与朋友保持联系,所以Emerson写给Doug Scott目的是表达感激。故答案为Because he wanted to express his appreciation。
根据文章第四段“Then, the unexpected happened. Letters poured in from postal workers from across the country.(然后,意想不到的事情发生了。来自全国各地的邮政工作人员的信件涌入。)”可知,在Emerson的便条发表在USPS的通讯中之后,他收到了来自全国的邮政人员的信,故答案为Letters poured in from postmen across the country.。
根据文章最后一段“Emerson's dad admitted he was shocked by the response at first but believed there was a message in this. He explained, "At present, any sort of human contact has more meaning."(Emerson的父亲承认,他起初对这种反应感到震惊,但相信这有其深意。他解释说:“目前,任何形式的人际接触都有更多意义”。)”可知,疫情期间,Emerson的父亲一开始感到震惊,而现在他觉得这个行为有意义,由此可知Emerson的父亲对她在大流行期间的行为是支持的。故答案为He supported it。
根据文章最后一段“He explained, "At present, any sort of human contact has more meaning."(他解释说:“目前,任何形式的人际接触都有更多意义”。)” Yes. Because it can promote meaningful human contact.。

B. On the island of Koh Phangan.
C. On the Mae Tang River.
D. In Chiang Mai.
33. Which country ranks highest in the “fun”score
A. Brazil.
B. Italy.
C. Spain.
D. Thailand.

B Mooney is putting more energy into worthwhile things.
C. Mooney doesn't care what she wears every day.
D. People should be grateful for their daily lives.
