How to Use a Modern Public Library
Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library If so, you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the better. It’s been years since they were dusty little rooms with books. They have transformed themselves into places where you can develop your love of knowledge, meet interesting people, or find out how to start a business.
Check out a book. While libraries still loan out(出借)books, you’ll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for, thanks to a cooperative network of area libraries. Via such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Once the book you’ve requested is delivered to the nearest branch, they will inform you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.
Check out other items. The library is now a multimedia zone, loaded with information in many formats(载体形式). You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs, and popular magazines. Some libraries even loan out toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.
Join targeted reading groups. Libraries will often hold reading-group sessions aimed at various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English. The library may sponsor a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. Your library might be able to accommodate you. And you might find it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.
Start a business using the help of your local library. If you want to have a business of your own, your local library can become a launch space for it. In library books and computers, you can find information on starting a business. Many libraries will help you with locally supplied information about business management shared through chambers of commerce(商会)and government agencies, and they will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.
4. Public libraries connected by a cooperative network benefit readers by______.
A. sharing their books on the Internet
B. giving access to online reading at a library branch
C. sending a needed book to a library branch nearby
D. making the checkout procedures diverse
5. According to Paragraph 3, what items may be checked out from a public library
A. A magazine and an e-book. B. A game and an oil painting.
C. A music CD and a kid’s toy. D. A DVD and a video player.
6. As is described in Paragraph 4, taking a small kid to a half-hour Story Time allows ______.
A. the kid to learn a new language B. the parent to enjoy quiet reading
C. the kid to overcome reading difficulties D. the parent to meet their program sponsor
7. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To point out the importance of public libraries.
B. To encourage people to work in public libraries.
C. To call for the modernization of public library systems.
D. To introduce the improved services of public libraries.

Researchers from the United Kingdom and Canada looked at what children ate when compared to their IQ levels. The researcher used surveys to ask parents how often their children ate junk food. The parents were surveyed when the children were aged 3, then followed up 5 years later to see how the diet affected the growing children’s IQ. They found that those who ate more junk food had lower IQ levels than those who ate a more nutritious diet.
“This suggests that any cognitive (认知的) effects relating to eating habits early in childhood may well continue to exist in later childhood, despite any later changes (including improvements) to dietary intake,” the authors wrote.
The researchers found that dietary habits between the ages of 4 and 7 did not have as much of an effect as what children ate at age 3 did. This may be because the brain grows the quickest during the first three years of life, and thus is more easily affected by things such as diet.
“A possible explanation for this is that the brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life. Studies have shown that head growth during this time is associated with cognitive outcome, and it is possible that good nutrition during this early period may encourage brain growth,” the researchers wrote.
The researchers point out that they have found an association between food and IQ, but not a direct cause or effect. Other factors could have played a role in determining a child's IQ. Parenting, genetics, and even family income are all factors that determine how intelligent a child will be.
Despite this, nutritionists tell us that what children eat can affect how healthy they are, how much rest they get, how smart they are during school. All of these things could change a child's test on IQ level. It is not clear whether food affects IQ directly or indirectly.
More research is needed to determine if there is a direct effect between what a child eats and how intelligent they are. However, the study does suggest that there may be more reasons than just physical health to make sure a child gets a healthy diet.
8. What is the best title for the passage
A. New Research on Healthy Diet
B. Diets Determine Our Heights
C. Children's Health and Junk Food
D. Junk Food Lowers Your IQ
9. Researchers surveyed the parents ______.
A. when the children were between 3 and 4 years old
B while they were having junk food with children
C. by asking how often their children ate junk food
D. by always following the children
10. From the research we know ______.
A. the more healthy food we eat, the more intelligent we are
B. what we eat during the first three years of life affects our brain most
C. parenting, genetics, and family income have little to do with our IQ
D. it is children’s diet that determines the growth of their brain directly
11. The passage is likely to appear in ______.
A. a science magazine
B. a newspaper advertisement
C. a financial report
D. an education paper
D
People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans (寿命) that are similar to humans, jiving for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors (肿瘤) developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous (癌变的), large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto’s paradox (悖论)”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”
12. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer
A. They have a rather large body size.
B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
13. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals
A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass.
C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
14. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to
A. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
B. The risk of cancer is not related to body size.
C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
D. The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
15. What can be concluded from the passage
A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.
D. The extra copies of elephants, genes are used to cure cancer patients.

If you want to have a business of your own your local library can become a launch space for it. In library books and computers, you can find information on starting a business. Many libraries will help you with locally supplied information about business management shared through chambers of commerce(商会)and government agencies, and they will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.

B. what we eat during the first three years of life affects our brain most
C. parenting, genetics, and family income have little to do with our IQ
D. it is children’s diet that determines the growth of their brain directly

New college life is approached. I’m glad to hear that there will be six clubs for me to join in. Among those six clubs, the drawing club is my favorite one, that I’d most like to choose. On the one hand, I have been learning to draw for several years, but I hope the club can give me more chance to show my talent. Maybe I can have my own exhibitions and become a famously artist one day. On other hand, I expect to make more friends who has the same hobbies. I think I would have a wonderful college life if I can be a member of the club. I’m looking forward to them.
on the other hand另一方面,为固定搭配。
这里指的是期待a wonderful college life,所以需用代词it来指代。故将them改为it。
