These two special days are celebrated in many different ways.On Mother’s Day people wear carnations(康乃馨).A red one symbolizes(象征)a living mother.A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honour their parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home,as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues(烤肉)for Father’s Day.These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts.Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is“the thought that counts”.Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

Advertising plays a major role in the competitive business world. Many industries take advantage of the power of advertising to attract or to win customers away from their business competitors. The influence of advertising is so huge that it causes many people to buy things that they do not want at the start.
Advertising encourages people to buy things they don’t want through misleading ideas. Advertising is proven to be a successful tool to stress the features of their product to the public even though it is regarded undesirable (不受欢迎的) such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohol and so on. For example, Dunhill, a cigarette company which sponsors (赞助) many football teams, seems to be promoting cigarettes to the public. Without the sponsorship, the company will be less known to the public, resulting in fewer sales of cigarettes.
Besides that, advertising has a large influence on the decisions made by the people in their everyday life. Many businesses use advertising as a form of promotion to create awareness (意识,认知) about their product in the market. For instance, in a fast food industry, the introduction of a new flavor o f burger needs advertising to reach the public while the other burgers require advertising to increase sales. Children, especially, are easily influenced by the advertisement and will have the desire to dine at fast food restaurants after that. Although fast food is bad for health, it has successfully become attractive to the public through advertising
However, advertising plays a part in helping customers to compare a product in terms of price, quality, reliability (可靠性) and so on. Without advertising, it will be very difficult for customers to judge the worthiness( 价值) of a product. For example, advertisements published by various companies have given the customers the opportunity to choose wisely when buying an item. Without the power of advertising, customers will choose a brand (品牌) which may not offer the best choice.
8. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Advertising. B. The product. C. Feature. D. The public.
9. The author mentions the fast food restaurants to show that________.
A. food industry is having a hard time
B. the information passed on in advertisements is unreal
C. children are easily influenced by the advertisement
D. advertisements influence people to make decisions
10. The main idea of Paragraph 4 is that advertising________.
A. plays a role in fast food industry
B. helps industries attract customers
C. encourages people to make the right choices
D. makes people buy some unnecessary things
11. The author’s attitude towards advertising can best be described as________.
A. objective B. supportive
C. uncared D. doubtful
B 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据it所在的句子“Advertising is proven to be a successful tool to stress the features of their product to the public even though it is regarded undesirable (不受欢迎的) such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohol and so on.(广告被证明是一种成功的工具,向公众强调产品的特点,即使它被认为是不受欢迎的,如香烟,毒品,酒精等。)”
根据文章第三段“Besides that, advertising has a large influence on the decisions made by the people in their everyday life.(此外,广告对人们在日常生活中所做的决定有很大的影响。)”
根据文章第四段“However, advertising plays a part in helping customers to compare a product in terms of price, quality, reliability (可靠性) and so on.(然而,广告在帮助顾客比较产品的价格、质量、可靠性等方面起着一定的作用。)”
文章第一段“The influence of advertising is so huge that it causes many people to buy things that they do not want at the start.(广告的影响是如此之大,以至于它导致许多人购买他们一开始不想要的东西。)”和第二段“Advertising encourages people to buy things they don’t want through misleading ideas.(广告通过误导的思想鼓励人们买他们不想要的东西。)” 但是最后一段“However, advertising plays a part in helping customers to compare a product in terms of price, quality, reliability (可靠性) and so on.(然而,广告在帮助顾客比较产品的价格、质量、可靠性等方面起着一定的作用。)” 故选A。
D
When we're in need, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸)of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as "friends" and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there's also a certain amount of control over privacy(隐私) that we don't get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a "friend" request from a parent or family member.
It's a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don't want to "reject" their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it personally if their children overlook their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent's friend request, it doesn't necessarily mean that he/she is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his/her life where he/she wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list.
12. What is the passage mainly about
A. Privacy online. B. Parents' friend requests.
C. The generation gap. D. Social networks.
13. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. Parents have realized the importance of social networks.
B. Parents feel secure about their privacy online.
C Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
D. Social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate.
14. What maybe the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent's friend request
A. Their parents make negative comments on them.
B. They hide something from their parents.
C. They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D. Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
15. Who are the passage mainly written for
A. Parents. B. Teachers.
C. Researchers. D. Teenagers.
【答案】12 B 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第一段最后一句Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends (社交网站已经成为学校走廊的延伸,所以你会把你的父母添加为“朋友”,并允许他们查看你的在线活动和与朋友的对话吗?)
However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
由第四段第二句话“On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.”

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. ____18____ If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention and let her know that he is admiring her.
However, when two persons are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking. ____19____ If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if he trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. ____20____
Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationship and situation.

B 17. G 18. F 19. C 20. A
根据下文“In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not for too long. And if he sensed that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.”(在公交车上,你可以看着一个陌生人,但不要看太久。 可知,此处是具体的例子说明眼神交流可能使人不舒服,B选项“Do you have such a kind of experience ”(你有这种经历吗?)
2.根据上文“If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you.”(如果你感觉被盯着看,且你认为这是完全没必要的,你会上下打量自己,看看自己是不是有什么问题。)可知,如果某人盯着你看,你会上下打量自己,看是否自己有问题,空处应该是对上文进行继续描述,G选项“If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way.”(如果你自身没有问题,你会因为这样被盯着而生气。)
3.根据下文“If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention and let her know that he is admiring her.”(如果一个男人盯着一个女人超过10秒钟,并且拒绝把目光从她身上移开,他的意图就很明显了。 可知,此处具体描述盯着异性看这种行为,是为了引起对方的注意,F选项“But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex.”(但是当你盯着异性看的时候,事情就不一样了。)引起下文,其中“staring at the opposite sex.”
4.根据上文“However, when two persons are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking”(然而,当两个人在谈话时,说话者只会时不时地看着听话者的眼睛,以确保听话者能关注自己的讲话。)可知,此句具体描述了正常的眼神交流所传达的意思,C选项“That’s what normal eye contact is all about.”(那就是正常的眼神交流。)
5.根据上文“A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.”(一个不会说谎的人,通常会盯着被骗的人看太久,从而暴露自己。

空前“control floods, produce electricity,”(控制洪水,发电)和空后“supply water to more farmers in the area”(为该地区更多的农民供水)是并列关系,应用连词and,故填and。
分析句子结构可知,“that ______(be) an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage.”
空前after(在……

11 The author’s attitude towards advertising can best be described as________.
A. objective B. supportive
C. uncared D. doubtful
C. Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
